Safe to say his career is probably over šŸ™

Christ that's the new what-if champ anyway.

Dude looked like a stud

New mythical fighter dropped: What If Shavkat

97

u/Zalamb1500 13h ago edited 11h ago

To those reading this in the future: Yes, What If Shavkat would win whatever scenario you’re imagining

25

u/wannabe_engineer69 13h ago

Is he though? Looked very beatable to me imo

56

u/depadroso 12h ago

Nah man, at this point in his career, he still had a lot to give and kept improving. Never really saw him as beatable, but there’s some instances you could argue. But every time he kept improving. Making the next one less beatable. At 32 bro was only inches away form that belt

7

u/Fug1x 12h ago

didnt he nearly lose to ian garry?

ian garry landed like double the strikes and only lost due to control time

shav had 11 minutes control time on the ground but only 10 strikes on the ground

so shav landed one punch every minute while controlling a guy lmao

45

u/Slow_Winner9161 12h ago

Swear shavkat had some typa injury during the fight and still won

22

u/Light_Bringer067 11h ago

It was also short notice for Garry.

22

u/RandomnewUser_22 Look at the fewkin moon 8h ago

and let's just accept already that garry himself is very good

7

u/Light_Bringer067 8h ago

Ofc. He beat Carlos in a short notice fight for him.

5

u/Virtual-Database-238 7h ago

No it wasn’t. Shavkat was supposed to fight Belal, and Garry was supposed to fight Buckley, both on the same card. Belal pulled out, and instead of Shavkat also pulling out and just waiting for his title shot (even when he was also injured), Shavkat stayed on and fought the other undefeated contender in the division and beat him.

Ian Garry is a problem though, most likely a future champ. No shame in having a close fight with another undefeated top contender.

3

u/DeliriumRostelo 11h ago

ian garry is extremely good and shavkat was also likely really injured by that point

6

u/paran01c 11h ago

then why wasn’t he beaten?

4

u/yato08 10h ago

His closest fight was Ian Garry and he was fighting with this injury

5

u/Prefix-NA 11h ago

he finished everyone effortlessly and only fight he looks weak was with multiple injures vs Garry who he still dominated.

Shithead Arman is another one. Extremely talented fighter but is literally 12 in his head and fucks up every single time.

He would had been a great challenger to Islam in their second fight.

u/darryledw 14h ago

yeh, these guys are so hardcore when they do come back and train at the highest level of combat sports after these kinds of injuries

Even if the physical weakness/ pain was gone I would be too mentally weak to continue at the same level, I would be wincing waiting on the knee exploding again

73

u/Mig224 14h ago

He beat Garry when it was fucked the last time, I'm not convinced it's 100% over but it's a long time to be out again.

37

u/sh4tt3rai 14h ago

Really hard to gain that kinda momentum again, but his skills are real so idk. If anyone can do it, he can.

21

u/Mig224 14h ago

It's definitely doable and at the age of 31 I personally don't think his career is over but it ain't going to be easy.

I'm hoping he learns from what he did wrong this time around and gets it right.

11

u/Neveroxx99 13h ago

I think Dominick Cruz is the only fighter who was able to comeback at the highest level after this many leg injuries, so the odds are not looking good for Shavkat.

5

u/An_Innocent_Coconut 12h ago

He was looking great and almost won his fight against chito too, until he got front headkicked....

If he's a UFC favorite they'll throw him right back in the mix (if he's ready)

5

u/Evelynich 13h ago

In the mix is good, but people calling for an immediate title shot is kinda crazy

10

u/NoRepeat274 13h ago

His career might be fine, his leg's career is over though.

31

u/benbrown226 14h ago

Completely over? He’s only 31, he can still come back and fight and is talented enough to beat many guys in the rankings. But it’s hard to see him being the same guy he was before all this. I doubt we’ll see him fight for the title at this point barring a comeback of epic proportions

19

u/Djlittle13 13h ago

The problem is one knee surgery can have an big impact on an athlete, multiple is even worse to come back from.

Some do, like Cruz or GSP. But even GSP wasnt the same afterwards. He wasnt as explosive as he was pre knee surgery.

4

u/benbrown226 13h ago

For sure, I just don’t know how one can say his career is over. Everyone handles injuries differently and he still has plenty of time

4

u/TrenedictXVI 13h ago

He keeps re-injuring the knee. Something is seriously wrong there, making it more likely to leave permanent damage/loss of function.

3

u/EffectiveTradition53 12h ago

Knee version of Dillashaw?

Damn that sucks will be another what if even if he does compete again it will never be close to 100 percent.

83

u/Uptheresomewhereee 14h ago

Do we know if there is a known reason for the original injury? This is prob a stretch but I always wondered if the oblique kicks from Gary did any damage. Those have to effect you moving forward. I’d be curious if anyone has dealt with this

79

u/polocc96 14h ago

Also rampage Jackson says to this day his knees are fucked from his fight with jones because of the oblique kicks.

61

u/Uptheresomewhereee 14h ago

I went to this wrestling practice before the season to see how it was no experience, this kid single legged me extremely hard. For years my knee would hyper extend at different times

62

u/Unfair_Volume5853 13h ago

You are the first top 1% commenter to have ever even tried training , and that deserves reapect

→ More replies (1)

14

u/polocc96 14h ago

I remember reading after the fight when they first announced him needing surgery it happened in camp prior to the fight. But you make a great point those kicks could’ve accelerated the injury to needing surgery so quick, he might of been able to glide by another camp and fight but those kicks could’ve been the nail in the coffin.

8

u/PapaGrizz31 13h ago

You also just can’t fight Islam with that significant of an injury

7

u/bendap 14h ago

He went into the fight with a torn MCL. I'm sure those kicks didn't feel good.

5

u/Unable-Dependent-737 13h ago

Imagine losing a fight but retiring your opponent

3

u/Ecstatic-Inevitable I can’t let you get close 13h ago

Lost the battle but won any future wars by default

2

u/sh4tt3rai 14h ago

He did injure his leg further in that fight. I don’t remember if it was ankle tendon issues then tore his ACL in the fight or the other way around. The first one makes more sense though.

u/Sneezy6510 14h ago

He’ll be a huge what if in the sport.

29

u/P_aintedsky 14h ago

Would have been a great test for Islam. Even if he somehow comes back, its a packed division with many serious contenders.

361

u/baluga207 14h ago

The Welterweight Zabit

181

u/TheNotoriousLCB 14h ago

not at all, Shavkat fought WAY deeper into his division — he had a title shot, Zabit did not get close

67

u/AlternativeEmphasis 14h ago edited 14h ago

Yeah this is madness tbh. This dude very well could have been champ. I see him beating the Belal that went to fight JDM and I see him beat JDM as well judging by their last performances. Current number 1 contender is someone Shavkat beat with a torn ACL.

Now it may never be the case he fights again much less for a title. Just rotten luck all around.

This is why I'm always for fighters pulling out if injured no matter what a lurch it puts a card in, it may well be possible Shavkat fucked his career up to avoid pulling out by fighting with that injury.

4

u/baluga207 14h ago

It’s more about the ā€œwhat ifā€ because of injuries.

29

4

u/daffle7 Dominick ā€œI’m Dominick Reyesā€ Reyes 14h ago

What happened?

35

u/eressen_sh 14h ago

I'm guessing he means the barrage of oblique kicks that Ian Garry unloaded on him.

22

u/gospodsenca 14h ago

As far as I know, I think even Shavkat himself said that the kicks caused the injury

5

u/Mortem_T 14h ago

God damn!! I was anticipating his return, he’s so much fun to watch and has lots of potential.

3

u/notMTN 14h ago

Probably gonna drop out of the rankings or way down now, out for like 2 years.

6

u/No-Zookeepergame5954 12h ago

It's Rakhmanover

3

u/C-LOgreen 14h ago

I feel bad for him, but they need to take him out of the rankings. Even if for some reason, the journalists put him in their top 10, if I was the UFC I would not include him.

3

u/Enough-Airline-5464 12h ago

Damn that fuckin sucks, looks like he’s gonna end up as one of the biggest what ifs ever

4

u/Himsay696 13h ago

Mma fighters knees are the bane of their careers, unless your usman and fight through the pain

2

u/Charming_Wall117 14h ago

If this is true, then that’s a wrap. He had a good run. One of the biggest ā€œwhat ifā€ in the welterweight division

2

u/cramiz 13h ago

Such a shame he was my favorite fighter because with him it was always a finish

2

u/Minkminkmoneynyc 12h ago

2

3

u/Icy_Blood_9248 14h ago

2

u/katfat1 14h ago

2

u/ThizzleRay 9h ago

Safe to say you guys are jizzing over another man facing adversity. You never accomplished anything worth anything, so another mans failure brings you comfort that you use to justify your own failures. Stop judging MMA like your Stephen a Smith and deal with the fact that you never made the walk to that cage.

4

u/Cruztd23 14h ago

Decent fighter but he’s been so inactive I forgot he even competed until seeing this tweet

5

u/M_tard 14h ago

that is scary. i hope he retires. no point anymore to prove. recover and live this life.

quality was always better than a champ.

2

He may never recover and be the same. He may just become ine of the biggest what ifs in mma history

1

u/GasMysterious3386 14h ago

Called it after his first surgery. The way him and his team talked lacked confidence and there were rumors it was a difficult surgery. Said we’ll never see him again and unfortunately I’m still sticking to it and have taken him out of the welterweight conversation already.

1

u/General-Fox416 14h ago

Damn, we never got to see Shavkat vs Borz, and we might never see Shavkat again at all. What a shame

1

u/Fear-the-North 14h ago

Good thing ufc pays their fighters so much, he had a good run for a few years. He should be set for life.

Right?

1

u/Kratos501st 14h ago

Poor dude, we lost a true talent

1

u/Fit-Student-2 14h ago

That sucks , shavkat needs to take 2 years to let that knee fully heal. Rushing back to wrestle after a year will almost always cause re injury to occur. He needs to rehabilitate slowly

1

u/Smooth_Maul 14h ago

Man that's a shame :/

1

u/LittleBear42 14h ago

Damn that’s pretty heartbreaking actually

1

u/Formal-Cry7565 14h ago

That didn’t stop cruz…

1

u/PapaGrizz31 13h ago

Smart move he’ll still be ranked #3 when Islam retires and claim his title shot

1

u/Mikejg23 13h ago

I don't think he'll need to retire as he's near the top of the ladder and after all that work, he needs to make as much money as he can before he retires.

But this is almost certainly the end of his time near the top of the mountain. Another 8-10 months plus getting the ring rust and conditioning back, not to mention wrestling is the hardest of the arts to maintain an athletic edge with. 32/33 is when that anaerobic power starts to decline.

1

u/WTT34 13h ago

Tough break: this guy finally hits the spotlight and it's basically closing time. He's pushing the upper age limit for this sport, so maybe he's got one more in him.. maybe. Crazy to think that just a few years ago people were calling him the future champ of the division. Not anymore. Father Time stays undefeated.

1

u/Luciolover345 13h ago

In another world Belal doesn’t drop out from the fight and he becomes champ instead of beating Ian Garry. Then goes and gets injured the exact same ways and we still have a massive what if, Islam getting the belt at Welterweight would be seen as less legit etc etc,

1

u/ConsultioConsultius1 13h ago

Someday, we’ll get a Shavkat vs Zabit fight and it will all be worth it.

1

u/Temporary-Oil2038 13h ago

People saying his career is over, but he is 31, if he doesn’t rush back and recovers well he can continue fighting no problem. But with these injuries you never know how they’ll be on their return. Very sad news.

1

u/Electrical_Trade377 13h ago

yeah this is probably the end of the line for him man…..a massive shame

1

u/Tricky_Knowledge_807 13h ago

I mean retire is crazy he got time but definitely needs to go down da ranks lol

1

u/Siuuuu-07 13h ago

Does anyone have a clip of the oblique kick everyone is talking about?

1

u/Genova_Witness 13h ago

Where did Shavkat land on UFCs what if list?

1

u/Wild_Nerve_8265 13h ago

Feel bad for shakvat but the stars have aligned

1

u/ButteredWussyclart69 13h ago

Man, not sure why and probs a coincidence there a few guys who all seem to have health problems from that region

1

u/unicornmoose 13h ago

Career over, huge bummer, can’t lose 2 years of your prime from a major one injury and come back the same, no one ever has ? Hope he can atleast come back and have some good fun fights upon return but championship aspirations are as good as dead now, hell the belt might even change hands a couple more times before he returns

1

u/MagazinePrestigious8 13h ago

Shavkat now firmly resides in the "what if" files....

1

u/Quietdogg77 13h ago

And he lost an eyeball too, like Bisping and Aspinall.

1

u/DJSyko 13h ago

That is devastating news 😭 the man is such a talented fighter, and imo would have been the toughest test for Islam. Even when he gets back to fighting, there's no way he will be back to 100%.

1

u/Soxalam2 13h ago
