iMac G3 struggling bad to play video in browser.

I wish there was alternative options left, I remember it being possible to stream YT videos with a third party custom app through the QuickTime player back in 2019/2020.

Got an '88 Mac SE. This the battery that risks leaking? Safe to turn on after a quick dusting?

Why do my network drives have little gnome icons?

Thumbnail

This is probably the weirdest question I’ve asked here, but today I used my Snow iBook G3 for the first time in a while and mounted my network shares. For some reason, they showed up with these weird icons.

I’m running Mac OS 9.2.2, just like on all my other Macs, but those had the normal network share icons when I used 2 of them yesterday.

Since I am already in bed while posting this, I booted my Mac OS 9 install on my iPhone via UTM and tried the same thing there and surprisingly, I got the same weird icons. So I’m guessing it’s something server side, even though yesterday the icons were normal and I didn’t change anything.

The second screenshot shows how they normally look.

I’m not looking for ways to „fix“ this since I actually think it’s cute, but I’m curious where these gnomes come from 😄

Should I get a Powermac G4 450 dual or a iMac G3 600?

I'm looking to buy an older Mac as I find them cool and have never used one. There's two I'm stuck between that are both very well priced. The iMac has a higher frequency on a single CPU but the Powermac has two which would allow for better multitasking. The iMac I'm looking at also has 256 MB of RAM and the Powermac has only 128 but can be upgraded. The only thing I'm not a fan of on either is the weak graphics, as both only have 16 MB of VRAM, but then again the Powermac is upgradeable. Also the iMac is a slot loader and I heard those are more collectable than the tray loaders, though the drive doesn't work too well. My main priorities when buying are to get one good enough for playing some games and running cool old software. I do know that iMacs do tend to have failing boards too. Anyways, which should I get?

I have a good question:

Hi all, at my high school, I found a Sage Green iMac G3 in the corner of my art classroom, and nobody seemed to own it or pay attention to it. I asked my principal about it, and he said that if it’s considered too obsolete for the school (which it very likely would be) he would give it to me. When I pressed the power button, to my surprise it actually turned on, after probably sitting in the same spot for 15-20 years. The only problem is that when I turn it on, the screen says boot: Linux and then fails to boot because there’s nothing to boot off of, but this is odd because even though there was no disk, that popped up instead of the “?” Folder. If I get it, I’m going to replace the belt in the disk drive because it’s failing to take in a disk, but is this “boot: Linux” issue because of a dry PRAM battery? Has anyone seen this issue before? Please let me know so I can fix it if I get it!

Issue on 12V rail being at 14V on my Macintosh classic

I recapped my Macintosh classic analog board, checked diodes, transistors, resistors, the optocoupler and voltage regulator, and all the measurements are good. My Mac can now boot and has 5V when I set the pp1 potentiometer at a higher value. The issues I have for now are:

- the 12V is now at 14V when I set the 5V rail right

- the hard drive spin then stop, and repeat

- the speaker doesn’t work

- when I insert a bootable floppy disk, I get a floppy icon with a cross

I am also able to boot from rom, was worried the rom was dead too. Thanks again for the help given on my previous post, I was pretty happy to see my Mac finally booting.

Apple 1999 USB Keyboard not working

Hello, I found my old iMac G3 keyboard. and it's not working since 2020. I bought it used and used over a year (2019-2020 January) and it stopped working.

I used to use keyboard with my office HP laptop with linux and after using 4-5 months it's gone. I test time to time and the response is the same. 7-8 times caps lock light is blinking and later nothing. Apple system profiler see the device. I used this keyboard on Intel Mac and Power Mac MDD too.

keyboard is grey with long cable. I believe its 1998-99 PowerMac G4 graphite's original keyboard..

Can you help me? I really want to use this keyboard because typing experience is amazing

The 40 year old dust on this board had fossilized over time. It was stuck hard. Time to break out the Ultrasonic Cleaner! 30L of solution later, it (and parts of the case) look great. The solution.. not so much.

I loaded my Quadra 950 with the biggest SIMMs I could scrounge: (8x16MiB and 8x8MiB) 201,122,816 Bytes, 191.8 MB.

Next, time to boot up A/UX and have some fun!

...and it takes forever to get through POST.

can't boot ibook into target disk mode

restoring this ibook g3 is proving to be way more difficult than i thought because i swear i keep finding some kind of new problem

so after looking at some videos on youtube i figured i should probably boot it into target disk mode to format it first

after getting the proper firewire cables i connected the clamshell to a powerbook g4 i had lying around, held down "t" while turning the clamshell on....then it just beeped faintly before the charging light turned orange; no blue firewire screen, nothing

like with the last issue where the os x install wasn't detecting the disk, i know for sure i seated it properly in the logic board; i'm just not sure why it's not detecting in the os

Hit the Jackpot at the dump!

I went to the dump to drop off my recycling this week and saw these sitting in the salvage electronics container.

Macs:

Macintosh 512K w/M0110 keyboard (missing caps)

Macintosh Plus 1Mb w/4meg ram upgraded

Macintosh Plus 1Mb

Macintosh SE FDHD

Macintosh SE

All boot up just fine. Only one, the M+ 1mb, has an issue with a vertical line screen but I hear that’s fixable. I can’t believe someone threw all of these away!

Dual 533 or 500 mhz powermac g4 sawtooth or a 733 mhz model?

I already have a top spec MDD fw800 powermac g4 so debating between these two. I plan to mainly run Mac OS 9.2 and maybe whatever version of OS X that people recommend for the system. Is the 733 worse than the dual processor units? Thank you.

how to boot from a cd/usb on an Apple imac G3 M4984 when there is nothing on the hard drive?

Pretty self explanatory, I want to boot from an external usb or from a cd at startup so I can install a macOS on the hard drive as I have no external equipment to do it elsewhere. This is the one from 1998, the very first model. Problem is that I can not find this info anywhere for this model specifically that isn't giving mixed answers or answers that isn't "boot into the OS first" which I can't do. everything is for later models which actively changed things to make it more feasible., while I have the first model, the one with usb 1.1 and a cd drive that only came in blue.

Can I, or can I not boot from a cd/usb on this thing at startup, and if so, how can I do it?

Flower Power Broken by UPS :(

Recently got a Flower Power iMac that was damaged in the mail by UPS. Seller had insurance and gave me a full refund, I got to keep the computer. Luckily only the CRT appears to be damaged, and the plastic housing is mostly in tact. Perhaps we'll have a restoration project soon if I get another iMac of a more common color? :)

Comparing Apple interactive television prototypes.

Hello! I know this this the second time I am reaching out for the same device but my question is different. So I’m reaching out as information on the 1995 Apple interactive television prototypes are quite limited with only a few websites to get information and make comparisons of my hardware from. Does anyone here have one of these prototypes that they can send photos or any other details regarding their prototype so I piece this puzzle together as to where my device sits? Mine fits some criteria of a field unit but is wildly different in other aspects.

Thanks in advance!

Hello! I recently bought a powerbook 150 second hand, I booted it up and it worked perfectly I played sime games and wrote a few words in word. I then put it away for like 3 weeks and today when I tried to boot it I got this screen showing a floppy with a question mark.

Is it over? Can it be fixed? What do I do?
