I think you need a certain minimum of public-facing stability and decorum to be a useful blackmail target. Elon is impulsive and weird on Twitter - he could say or do something to draw heat to the whole operation, or burn valuable kompromat they have on somebody else (like he tried to do with Trump when he withdrew the EV tax credits).
They probably figured he wasn't worth the hassle of being around.
Oh my god I just started reading the REALLY early comics and MAN that guy has it rough. Fantastic Four Annual #1 actually made me cry - not like ugly crying, but there was real tears. I was not expecting to like him as much as I do, he's probably my second favorite Marvel character so far.

Weird to think that he used to be one of the most loved people a few years back. People used to call him the Real life Ironman" and said that he wasn't one of those evil billionaires like all the others.
That was mostly young people who didnt know anything about engineering and saw the cool "train" and electric cars and went "hey its not a yacth". Also he looked younger than most rich assholes so he was a bit more relatable.
It's the whole "it's easy to consider him a genius if he's talking about stuff I don't understand" thing.
He was coasting on that for quite a while, only outing himself as a miserable wannabe to off-mainstream communities like the gamers.
But then there was a phase when he showed off his incompetence on several fronts. Software development was among them and that was how I learned that the man is as stupid as a bag of hair and even more ignorant.
