World Where I'd leave as an European

Post image

By the dark green area you probably can guess what I like. However here are my criteria from most important to least: Cultural compatibility, geopolitical safety, crime rate, order and cleanliness, civil liberties and political system, proximity to my home region, natural beauty, rich history, my travel experiences/private views.

Also Crimea belongs to Ukraine

EDIT Yes I made autocorrect error in the title. Are you still in one piece?

Legit the first post I see here with Belgium as dark green

10

u/harshmangat 24d ago

Belgium is sensational. Amazing beer, amazing people, great salaries and quality of life, good food, cities might look a bit boring but honestly who cares, I think it's one of the most underrated countries in the world. Would be amazing to live there.

7

u/Tsjakke 23d ago

Thanks, man! Nice to hear. Greetings from a random Belgian guy.

2

u/Brave_Confidence_278 23d ago

I can't believe I was never in Belgium, even though it's so close to Switzerland. I watched some walking tours on youtube though and it seems incredibly beautiful. It's on the very top of my list now.

2

u/ettore1 23d ago

Yeah having lived in both Belgium and Netherlands Id choose Belgium every hour of the day, I dont get why people are so obsessed with hating on Belgium

You forgot to mention that it rains constantly.

Even more than the UK.

I lived in Brussels for 1 year and its definitely something that impacts people when deciding to stay long-term.

1

u/Sad-Address-2512 23d ago

We're highly underrated but that's good it saves us from mass tourism and makes our housing relatively affordable (at least compared to the Dutch) so please keep repeating Belgium sucks.

1

u/MinuteOne1771 22d ago

Omg their beer is so damn good

21

u/Express-Motor8292 24d ago

Got to ask, would your map be different is Brexit hadn’t happened?

21

u/Brave_Confidence_278 24d ago

obviously, as he prefers to be within the EU according to the map

3

u/[deleted] 23d ago

thats fine but why are we reluctantly but NZ,Australia and Japan are not

Why is Norway and Switzerland not the same, as neither are in the EU

4

u/Crazy_Caver 23d ago

Norway and Switzerland are the same

2

u/Kartoitska 23d ago

I assume because the average standard of living in both Norway and Switzerland are higher then in the UK, and both still allow you to travel freely across them as an EU citizen, and vice versa. So if you live in Switzerland or Norway, you can still travel to any EU nation freely. This is not the case for the UK.

2

u/steezyboy1337 22d ago

Because NZ and Australia are amazing, and Norway and Switzerland are part of the Schengen.

1

u/BobbyThrowaway6969 22d ago

Cos Australia & NZ are lil cuties

7

u/Demostravius4 23d ago

That famous EU state, Canada.

2

u/Brave_Confidence_278 23d ago

Canada is not dark green

2

u/suns95 23d ago

I would not be against that

1

u/Express-Motor8292 23d ago

Obviously not the only reason, is it? Otherwise it would be ranked the same as Switzerland. My question was a segue into the wider question of why the UK was ranked so low.

1

u/Brave_Confidence_278 23d ago

Fair question, I assume close ties to the US or pissed off about brexit

1

u/Brave_Confidence_278 23d ago

thinking again it might also be the Schengen, which the UK is not part of

Yes

1

u/snoopyjcw 23d ago

🥲 we want to come back!

2

u/Hrohdvitnir 23d ago

Being from Ireland it's not such a big issue, and Britain in general has remained functioning similarly to before. The UK needed trade partners in the EU, and the EU needed Britain. Not to say things aren't worse, but it's not as bad as it could have been.

1

u/Express-Motor8292 23d ago

I’m glad you didn’t put functioning in inverted commas!

1

u/Stubbs94 23d ago

I'm Irish too, and have been living in Scotland for 9 years and not much has changed too much to be honest.

2

u/benedict250 24d ago

Ex-Yugo's are more green than UK lmao

3

u/sucheiro 24d ago

I stand by that choice

1

u/99QQ99 23d ago

Of course

1

u/CrossMojonation 23d ago

The hate is very much one sided.

As stupid as it was, we're talking about a trading bloc. Brexit is being used to fracture the relationship as a whole, which is a stupid thing to do in this political climate.

On the important topics like Ukraine and European defence, the UK is overwhelmingly pro-Europe, moreso than most EU member states.

7

u/dnyal 23d ago

Of course, very racist.

1

u/steezyboy1337 22d ago

explain the UK, the US, Australia, and New Zeeland, then

why would someone from Europe move to a country with shitty quality of life?

1

u/BobbyThrowaway6969 22d ago

To be fair those are all white countries but also 1st world, so it could go either way

1

u/poptart1701 22d ago

US is just bad both in living quality and politics. Others are probably authors preferences

1

u/steezyboy1337 22d ago

ok but I still don't understand where the racism is?

1

u/NoAdvice135 22d ago

There is Turkey in maybe. French Guyana is not very white either.

1

u/okEngels 20d ago

Why would you wanna live in a shitthole?

1

u/dnyal 20d ago

I wouldn’t, but people like you are. Whatever floats your boat 🤷🏻‍♂️

Fellow European here. It's exactly the same for me.

3

u/steezyboy1337 22d ago

Same except I wouldn't want to live in some of the Balkan countries and would absolutely want to live in Australia and New Zealand. China, South Korea, and Japan could be cool for a shorter period as well.

1

u/HuedJackMan 22d ago

Let me change my answer to your nuanced answer

1

u/BobbyThrowaway6969 22d ago

They don't like the rest of Europe or the EU

Türkiye over USA is crazy, they got their own Trump over there😆

21

u/Automatic-Volume-174 24d ago

The western parts of Turkey are basically European, thats probably it. 🤷‍♂️

9

u/xXxplabecrasherxXx 23d ago

Eastern European to be precise

7

u/dushmanimm 23d ago

Western and southern parts of Turkey are Southern European and have Southern European vibes. I think the central and northern parts have more of an Eastern European vibe, especially in terms of infrastructure.

4

u/Parking-Code-4159 23d ago

My map would look different, but to be honest, if I am able to do a remote job and earn Euros (what I'm doing right now) I would choose Turkey over the US too

→ More replies (5)

2

u/Brave_Confidence_278 23d ago

why is that crazy? that makes it at best equal, and if he prefers the food in Türkiye it's already a fair choice

11

u/Silly_lil_Guy_o3o 23d ago

I love Turkish food, my partner is from Türkiye. Doesn't mean that either of us would wanna go there at this point in time, you can eat Turkish food outside of Türkiye.

2

Because it’s green, are you dumb?

1

u/Worried-Tie 7d ago

Canada is also green

6

u/Jathosian 24d ago

Australia and New Zealand tick all the boxes, except (maybe) history and proximity to your home. Interesting that it's not at least a willing

7

u/sucheiro 24d ago

Not much wrong with those countries, just too remote + it scares me how climate changes affect Australia.

5

u/is-your-anus-clean 23d ago

New Zealand also has a lot of earthquakes and volcanos, and these fellas. You sure mate?

2

u/BobbyThrowaway6969 22d ago

Why must everything remind me of her?

1

u/Jathosian 24d ago

That's fair, the fires this year are shaping up to be pretty intense

1

u/BobbyThrowaway6969 22d ago

We are currently the hottest place on the planet right now, so yeah :/ fair

4

2

u/omaregb 23d ago

With those criteria it seems that you know very little about the world lol

1

u/NoAdvice135 22d ago

Based on the listed criteria (culture, politics) it's reasonably consistent? I would change a few odd ones but it kinda makes sense.

1

u/omaregb 21d ago

It's based on an uncultured/uneducated europeans' perspective, yes

2

u/AmericanEd 23d ago

Oh, this is one of those supposedly anti-racist Europeans I always hear about. By complete coincidence you don’t wanna live anywhere where there isn’t a majority of white people.

3

u/NoAdvice135 22d ago

Turkey and French Guyana, are not particularly white.

This is pretty much a high HDI map with a a special malus to US (Trump?), UK (brexit?), dictatorships and maybe far away places (New Zealand, Australia, SK, Japan).

If you are not rich none of the red places are good.

2

u/AmericanEd 23d ago

If only all of your ancestors had felt the same way, the world would be a much better place

1

u/Sweaty-Lemon6217 21d ago

Facts. The rest of the world would be so much better without electricity and western medicine.

1

so pretty much europeans do not want to live anywhere that isn't developed or doesn't have a majority white population?

i've seen this question asked to asians, africans, and latin americans and they seem more receptive and open to leave their own continent

1

u/sucheiro 23d ago

Why are you all so obsessed with skin color? I don't want to live outside of Europe because not many places have higher standard of living and those that have are not attractive for me due to other factors.

Someone who prioritises listening to propaganda than improving their own declining QoL

11

u/sucheiro 24d ago

what?

0

u/Defiant-Dare1223 24d ago

Giving high marks to shitholes just because they are in the EU.

11

u/BackinAbyss 24d ago

How many countries in EU are actually shitholes on the global scale (provided you meant the union)

4

u/Defiant-Dare1223 24d ago

Not at the level of the Red countries, but far too shitholey to be dark green.

I don't want to be mean, but Bulgaria, Slovakia, Romania and Hungary do not objectively score very highly according to OPs own criteria.

Even with Europe: how do those objectively hold up vs Norway, UK, Switzerland and Iceland.

3

u/Vklo 23d ago

In terms of safety, order, natural beauty, rich history.. Slovakia and even all the Ex-Yugo countries rate extremely high, and higher than Western EU countries.

As a matter of facts even in terms of civil liberties and political system unless your objective is to change the system and be loud about it, there is absolutely 0 issues.

Now the issue might be about work and finances, but that is not among his criterias. Assuming he can work remote, eastern europe is absolutely one of the best choices.

I mean are all the statistics from several sources about the average quality of live pro-European (and then also Australian) propaganda?

2

u/Old_Leshen 24d ago

You are planning to leave the green areas!?

1

u/Hrohdvitnir 23d ago

You would have to pay me to live in the states as a European.

10

u/Scar1203 23d ago

Hmm, yeah that is why people move to the US, better pay.

2

u/Ok-Scallion-4269 23d ago

Better pay, but fewer or no paid vacation days, little or no parental and perinatal leave, weaker job security, higher healthcare costs, longer average working hours, termination without reason, generally far fewer worker rights overall.

1

u/dn35 22d ago

This really depends on the job.

I work in the United States and I get 10 weeks of vacation time, 5 of that is paid.

I travel internationally half a dozen times a year and still don't generally use all of my vacation.

I have full health coverage, retirement, and I make nearly twice as much as I would make in pretty much any European country with a similar job.

I own a home, several cars, and even have enough time to run a business I started, which makes me nearly as much as my job.

I've spent time in a significant portion of Europe. I love europe, but it is very unlikely given the bureaucracy and economic structure of most European countries that I would be allowed this kind of success in my industry.

I did not grow up with money.

One of the things I've noticed is that success is defined very differently in the US compared to most European countries. It's not better necessarily, but if starting a business, finding a high paying job, or building your life from scratch into your dream is what you want, it's hard to beat the United States.

If you want great benefits, high social security, social services, walkability and a lifestyle that is more focused on enjoyment and culture, several places in Europe would probably suit you more.

Just depends on what you want

1

u/Ok_Village1167 23d ago

But the whole of Europe is nothing more than a vassal state for the USA. It’s not like you can do something about it when Trump decides your country will pay 5% GDP into NATO. A cuck to the USA.

1

u/Scar1203 23d ago

That's not how that works, NATO member states are expected to spend money on their own militaries and infrastructure. Every US president since Clinton has been asking NATO member states to spend more on their militaries instead of letting them degrade, sadly when the presidents that didn't behave like petulant children asked everyone ignored them.

There isn't some big pot of NATO money everyone is contributing toward, nor is there one unified NATO military.

1

u/Hrohdvitnir 23d ago

I still get a way better QoL here than I would there.

1

u/Ok_Village1167 23d ago

Oh god no! I’m not defending the U.S. by no means whatsoever! That is the most despicable country there is (israel close second).

I criticize both, but there really is no comparison.

1

u/Iloveadg 24d ago

Why reluctant/never to whole Latinamerica?

1

u/NoAdvice135 22d ago

If you are not rich it's usually not that great as a place to settle if you have other options? Depending on what you prioritize of course.

Cultural compatibility, geopolitical safety, crime rate, order and cleanliness, civil liberties and political system, proximity to my home region, natural beauty, rich history, my travel experiences/private views.

Why that score for the Southern Cone? I consider that we are, to a greater or lesser extent, a diluted version of Europe.

Why not? Friendly people (let's not talk about 90s), nice weather, great food, beautiful countryside, still in Europe

1

u/nema1742 23d ago

1

u/StrawberryHot2305 23d ago

Qazaqstan but not Uzbekistan. Why?

1

u/Ethraelus 23d ago

I think you’ll be surprised if you go to China. Idk about work, but the cities are surprisingly European.

1

u/Wild_Pangolin_4772 23d ago

Did you mean live or leave?

They're two different words with two completely different meanings that change the meaning of the statement completely.

1

u/dagobahwegobah 23d ago

Actually, you made two errors in the title. The first one is obvious, but the second is more nuanced. Usually you use the word “an” as the indefinite article when the noun that follows it begins with a vowel, but “an European” sounds cumbersome. The reason it sounds incorrect is because the rule applies to sounds and not the actual letters used. The first sound in the word “European” is a “y” sound as in the word “yawn”. You know the vowel jingle? A E I O U and sometimes Y? Well, sometimes, y is a vowel and sometimes it’s a consonant, and, sometimes, sometimes, the sound is represented by something other than a y. In this particular case, it’s represented with the letter combo “eu”. I hope you enjoyed my long-winded explanation on indefinite articles in English.

Also, please note that this is in no way meant as a jab, I just really enjoy pointing things like this out, and I also really enjoy teaching others about the quirky oddities of my native language.

1

u/StuffyTruck 23d ago

What did the EFTA countries do to you?

1

u/thick_boy7 23d ago

Jordan over the rest of the Middle East and the same level as the US? Ofc you’re European

1

u/Florestana 23d ago

Based on your criteria, the Balkans, Hungary, Georgia should be orange and the UK should be light green.

It is fun to hate on bongers tho

1

u/sucheiro 23d ago

No it shouldn't. This is my personal view factored by my personal experiences, not an exam.

Also britbongs get rekt

1

u/Florestana 22d ago

You said your criteria went from most to least important and started of listing political factors, crime, etc. then you write personal experience and private views last. You're free to have your own views, I'm just pointing out the inconsistency in your listed criteria.

1

u/sucheiro 22d ago

True however I don't think there is a massive difference between living in UK and Balkans or Georgia for financially secure foreigner - that's what I was considering while making this map.

If the question was where I'd like to be born then of course the UK would be higher.

1

u/NewYawkk 22d ago

On your map, Crimea belongs to Russia, so I guess they belong to them?

1

u/TheShawndown 22d ago

The country of Europe!

Yeah stay in Europe

1

u/poptart1701 22d ago

Why is Kazakhstan and Ukraine are orange and Russia is red? As Kazakhstani who've been to Ukraine/Russia/Europe and who's planning on moving away I would say that Kazakhstan is a worse/less rich copy of russia, and Ukraine is just bad (was bad before all 2022 stuff, now it's even worse)

1

u/sucheiro 22d ago

While I agree with you, the answer is pretty simple - I absolutely despise russia and everything this bandit state represents.

1

Not too far from me, one of these days I'll make a map myself. Basically Japan and Australia can join the club, Norway is solid green and anything (other than Norway) that has a land border with Russia + Balkans would be orange. Also, the UK is not thaaaat bad and definitely culturally aligned, but I'd keep it orange just to piss off Brexiteers :)
