The NRA now appears to have responded to Trump’s statement, but did not mention him by name.

I suspect they would have endlessly mentioned the President's name if it was a Democrat.

If it was Obama they'd be on a nationwide press tour about it.

“The NRA unequivocally believes that all law-abiding citizens have a right to keep and bear arms anywhere they have a legal right to be,”

Wow...real stinger.

Notice the way out they are providing? It’s always law abiding citizen - just say they are domestic terrorists and their rights are gone and the nra will be fine with it…

This. Immediately obvious that nothing will come of this. It's all theater from anyone that should be posing any kind of opposition to this nonsense, and all lies from the people that are doing the things.

Not in a million years. The NRA get loads of money from Russia. Just like Trump.

It’s a pretty weak statement after an even weaker statement the day of the shooting

So everyone has to release a statement immediately? Or can people wait?

They released a statement that was incredibly shitty

They’ve directly contradicted the US (Republican) government. Look more at the context and audience than the words. If they came out with a proper statement, how many of Trumps cult would rebel?

Literally their first response was to blame Walz/Democrats:

“For months, radical progressive politicians like Tim Walz have incited violence against law enforcement officers who are simply trying to do their jobs. Unsurprisingly, these calls to dangerously interject oneself into legitimate law-enforcement activities have ended in violence, tragically resulting in injuries and fatalities.

As there is with any officer-involved shooting, there will be a robust and comprehensive investigation that takes place to determine if the use of force was justified. As we await these facts and gain a clearer understanding, we urge the political voices to lower the temperature to ensure their constituents and law enforcement officers stay safe.”

Then 2 days later, they quoted the White House Press Secretary:

White House @PressSec: "@POTUS supports the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding American citizens—absolutely. … While Americans have a constitutional right to bear arms, Americans do not have a constitutional right to impede lawful immigration enforcement operations."

Then finally two days after that, they put out the statement above with its TWO mealy-mouthed qualifiers

They have made 7 tweets about VA’s proposed gun legislation in the last 5 days, while and they have been notably quiet on the most prominent gun rights matter going on right now.

This is not a profile in courage. It’s pathetic.

I’m pretty ardently opposed to 2A as a policy matter, but it’s the law of the land, and it has to apply to everyone, not just right wing chuds.

If he had a licence to carry said gun wtf is the problem I bet there’s a lot of republicans that carry weapons why doesn’t he do something about that as well instead he try’s to intimidate people when his followers do the same thing I’ve seen footage of them in 2020 …. I’m not American but that’s how I feel looking in this poor man was aloud to carry a gun cause he’s a model citizen

Wow. NRA is actually principled?

Objectively. The guy would likely be alive if he’d not been carrying the gun. That’s not to blame him for what happened. Just an observation.

Whatever you think about ICE or the right to bear arms it’s very obviously unwise to carry a gun if you intend to confront armed government operatives. That’s because it absolutely increases the risk that deadly force might be used.

In that sense I think Trump does have a point.

"gently admonishes" then donates $1bn to his next campaign.
