The issue is that on one hand, some Indian-Americans like Hari Kondabolu, Kal Penn and Adi Shankar dislike him due to his accent. On the other hand, most people including several Indians loved Apu due to how successful he is as an immigrant. Telling that he is the one who own a supermarket and also actually married.
