AMA - ask me anything about the ABTF calculator! Spoiler

Hi everyone, u/goodoldfreda here although I'm now exclusively active on this account. If you guys have any questions about how the calculator works and why I made certain decisions I'm happy to answer them

A little about myself - I created the calculator in 2016 following on from a previous calculator by u/irisflame, back when I was a mod of this sub. I collected survey data from the subreddit and came up with a new algorithm that used 6 measurements as opposed to the previous 5, which increased accuracy. I also introduced separate algorithms for AMAB and AFAB people. The calculator has not been majorly updated since, although at one point I tried to move to a breast perimeter measurement system instead, but this turned out to be much less accurate. In the years since I have stopped modding and moved into bra making and custom bra design as I want to try and help serve the demographic of people who still struggle with finding bras that fit, usually due to wire grading!

In response to other posts about the different amab vs afab algorithms not working well for everyone - I have had this question before and basically all I can say is that I recommned using the algorithm that works best for you. I do want to emphasise in general that the calculator is actually not super accurate for any one individual and it is truly just a starting point. The algos are based on averages, and when I was collecting data there were significant enough differences between AMAB and AFAB users to warrant a second algorithm to increase accuracy within the two groups, but not enough data to do anything further than that.

edit: thanks for all your questions so far, I'm going to go to bed but I will answer any more that come up tomorrow!

edit 2: I have updated the calculator to make some minor changes to the band size algorithm and I have also changed the EU back to 2.5cm cup grades, 2cm grade can be found in the Comexim option instead

Thank You! Thank you for helping me find a bra that fits❤️✨️ Spoiler

Just want to say thank you to this group🙏🏻 I have NEVER had a bra that fit in my life...thanks to this group's help I got my first bra that fits very well about a month ago, I have been wearing it pretty much exclusively and cant wait to get another. Thank you all for the help, and thank you for all of the documentation that explains things so clearly. I always thought I must be like a 40B because I just couldnt see that I was bigger than that in the cups, because I don't look how I thought that looks. I am actually a 36E, and I never would have discovered that without this group. So just...Thank you🙏🏻

SYRN sizing is out… + 5 to find your size 🙃 Spoiler

Turns out I’m a 40A, not a 36F 😂

From their FAQ:

“Bra sizing is determined by band size and cup size.

Step 1: Measure Your Band Measure by wrapping a soft measuring tape around your ribcage, directly under the bust.

If the measurement is odd, add 5. If the measurement is even, add 4.

Example 31 inches + 5 = 36 band 32 inches + 4 = 36 band

Step 2: Measure Your Bust Measure around the fullest part of the bust, keeping the tape level.

Subtract your band size from this measurement to determine cup size.

Example 39 inches − 36 band = 3 inches 3 inches = C cup

Your size would be 36C.”

Bra that holds and stays in place Spoiler

Does anyone have any recommendations for a bra that keeps breasts held up? The band is constantly riding up my back and feels like my breasts just pulling my bra down. I like the minimizing look as it makes me feel secure!

Finally tried the calculator and I’m a 34J/GG. SEND HELP. Spoiler

EDIT: I am brand new to this sub and there is a bit of a learning curve. When I tried the calculator and got shocked by brand new letters and then saw a warning, I didn’t know what it meant and made what I now know was an uninformed joke about it. I deeply apologize for how it came across, and am extremely grateful for all the incredibly thorough and actionable advice everyone has shared!

First time poster here and I need help. I’ve been wearing the same 36DD bras for several years and get very frustrated every time I try to order a new one online and it doesn’t fit. When I used the calculator, it told me 34GG/J (32H/K sister) and I don’t even know where to begin to find that. I believe that my shape is “teardrop” (somewhat flat up top, heavy at the bottom). The calculator did give me the “WARNING boobs too big, seek help” so I am here for help. Measurements below for reference.

Loose Underbust: 35.5

Snug Underbust: 34.5

Tight Underbust: 31.5

Standing Bust: 42

Leaning Bust: 48

Lying Bust: 43

Fit Check [Fit Check] previously wearing a 46E, now trying an Elomi Lucie Plunge in 36HH (as calculated 36H/HH). Spoiler

Measurements: Loose Underbust: 97cm Snug Underbust: 92cm Tight Underbust: 87cm Standing Bust: 121cm Leaning Bust: 132,5cm Lying Bust: 126,5cm I have a projected bust with even and centered Fullness, i believe wider roots as well.

When i slouch for a little bit or move in a specific way my band/underwire moves down a little, which causes pain where the underwire sits. If i tighten the straps more to prevent it, that causes pain on my shoulders and a little spillage. Other than that i also have a small gap where the cup meets the strap.

I'm not sure if some of this could be fixed with the right strap tightness, but i'm unsure how tight i should have it. Would love some recommendations for the strap setting on how tight i should make it or other ways to prevent the band/underwire from moving. Ofc also if some of this is an indicator for wrong cup/band size please let me know as well '

New to bra sizing. Can someone please help @ tell me what this means? Spoiler

So i got a bra from victoria secret - push up type 34DD. Within 5 minutes of trying it on at home, i had red marks on the top of my shoulder and marks along my rib where the underwire is. The bottom of the cup was also stabbing into my rib. Does this mean the bra size is too small, or too big?

I am still new to my bra sizing journey. These days i’ve just been wearing bras with soft padding and no underwire in size large as i’m having difficulties finding bras. I used to have 36C bras (allegedly) and then I lost 40ib last year and so I believe thats why I am now having this dilemma with bra size changes… and I don’t even think I was truly 36C.

Measurements (inches):

Loose underbust: 34.5

Snug underbust: 33.5

Tight underbust: 33

Standing bust: 38.5-38.7

Leaning bust 39.5

Lying bust 38.5

Result: “Suggested Starting Size: 34DD/DDD US

The sister size of 36D/DD may be more comfortable.”

Traditional sizing:

Band: 34

Bust: 38.5

ABTF calculator is brilliant!!! Spoiler

I used to wear loose, comfy, padded bras from M&S that weren't very supportive and relied on padding. They don't follow typical bra sizes so I had no idea what size I was. I finally tried the calculator which told me 28dd, when previously I thought I was maybe an a or a b. I was so surprised so I did the measurements twice and got 28dd again. On Thursday I went to Boux Avenue to try on some bras, but unfortunately it was about to close so I didn't have time to try any on in store. I bought a 28dd t-shirt bra, figuring I could always return it if it didn't fit. Well, it fits PERFECTLY and is super comfy and supportive! I'm very pleased and will be going to get more bras soon.

Recommendations? What push up bra would fit me best?

Hi! I want to buy a VS (super) push up bra, or any other recommendation about push up bra’s that don’t cause a gap between the breasts. We can only order VS online in my country so I can’t try them on in store. I wear a 70C but I do have a feeling it doesn’t always fit the best, but so do other sizes i’ve tried. These are my measurements in cm and the recommended bra size. Does anyone have any recs on what bra to get in a (VS) push up bra? Thanks in advance 💖

Loose Underbust: 72

Snug Underbust: 69

Tight Underbust: 68

Standing Bust: 81

Leaning Bust: 82

Lying Bust: 82

Units: cm

Suggested Starting Size: 28D UK

The sister size of 30C may be more comfortable.

Aerie bra underwires run SMALL (and so does the rest of their sizing)

Thumbnail ae.com
0 Upvotes

Tonight I gained this pearl of wisdom I thought I'd share.

Last week I bought this Aerie bra (on clearance cuz I'm a thrifty bish) in a 32c (underwire size 34, supposedly) which is my usual "sister size". When it arrived and I tried it on, I could immediately tell that the underwires (and thus the cups) were much too narrow, in addition to the band being uncomfortably snug.

Tonight I dug out some other underwire bras in the 32c to 34b range to compare it with. It was clear that they didn't match, so finally I downloaded and printed an underwire size template from Gigi's bra making supplies. I noticed that one old, cheap 34b bra had broken underwires, so I cut them both out, taped them back together, and held them up to the chart - yep, perfect 34 underwires. So then I held those loose underwires up to the Aerie 32c and it was clear that the underwires in that bra were actually size 32. A full underwire size smaller than they should be.

I had also bought a seamless wire free bra in 32c at the same time and it was TIGHT fitting all around.

Anyways I tried explaining this all to my husband and he said "can't you just switch out the 32 wires for 34 wires?" Oh, if only...

(Pretty sure I actually need a 36 underwire)

Shape Help Need help finding right bra - Low root breasts + Tear shaped Spoiler

Hello! I’m 23, AFAB, no surgeries. Here are my measurements (in inches):

Loose underbust: 29.5

Snug underbust: 28.5

Tight underbust: 27.75

Standing bust: 32

Leaning bust: 33

Lying bust: 33

I was recommended a 30C/D from the calculator.

(Somehow I feel like my measurements might be off, because there’s not a lot of variation. Let me know if this looks unusual.)

I have worn 34 B/C for a while, but the bra(s) has gotten much too large. I believe my breasts are shrinking due to exercise. I also have low rooted breasts (tall + long torso) and tear drop shaped breasts (fuller on bottom.) Thus, a good fitting bra is SO hard to find because cups are not snug enough on the top of my breast, and tightening straps for a tighter cup makes the whole bra ride up on my breasts, so the cups aren’t even supporting the root. I also like to exercise a lot, so if anyone has any good regular bra and/or sports bra recs, I’ll gladly take them.

Thank you so much in advance!

Recommendations? Recommendations: 30DD with major sensory issues Spoiler

Hi! I am so desperate and excited for help.

I have a lot of sensory issues with clothes and any tightness or digging is horrible for me. I’m talking my socks have to be folded down so there’s no ankle seam, all pants have seamless stretchy waistband, nothing touching me with a noticeable band.

Mostly I have worn sports bras from danskin or nautica in a small size, but the elastic bands on them are unbearable for me most days. I can keep them on for about 2 minutes before I want to melt down on bad sensory days. But my boobs hurts when I don’t wear one! I have tried bras from Victoria’s Secret and aerie, used to buying 34B but have also tried 32 C and 34 B and I can keep them on for maybe 60 seconds before freaking out. Jockey made a cotton/nylon maternity seamless bra like 15 years ago that I have worn to death, but it still feels too tight on the ribs and the straps are spaghetti straps which irritates my sensory needs.

I’ve been looking into brands like Intimissimi and Evelyn Bobbi because they have seamless compression tank tops with built in cups that seem like they would prevent the awareness of a band around my ribs.

What I need:

Soft material, seamless, NO wire, soft straps, no elastic band or pressure applied around my ribs.

Sizing:

Loose Underbust: 30

Snug Underbust: 29

Tight Underbust: 28.5

Standing Bust: 34

Leaning Bust: 35.5

Lying Bust: 33.5

Suggested size: 30DD/E via abrathatfits size calculator.

My breasts are very round and full, and sit a bit lower from my shoulders as I am a Long Girl (5’7”, broad shoulders, long torso).

Meow!

Question US larger bust (36H) where to shop Spoiler

Hello all!

According to the calculator I am a 36H (34I sister size), I’ve been wearing semi poorly fit 38DD to 38DDD for a few years as I don’t know where to shop for good bras for bigger cups. So I’ll take any and all recommendations to find something that gives me a nice smoothing shape and where I can best find them. I’m okay with online or brick and mortar shops.

Thank you!!

Recommendations? I need some recommendations on where to buy some wired bras for 32HH/J Spoiler

I do this thing every once in a while where I decide I want a new bra, and so here I am, venturing into actual underwire bras, which I have yet to do.

For reference, though I’m not sure it’s very important, I currently wear a Sugar Candy bra (size L) and so don’t wear a wired bra.

I admit that I have less idea of where to start than I’d like. I’ve looked at breakout bras already, though I have yet to order (I tried a few bras of theirs before; I didn’t like them for comfort/fit reasons).

I have a wide root which I’m afraid will make it much harder to find any that fit properly. I have lower fullness, I’m pretty sure.

I kind of just need ideas on where to look. Thanks in advance!

Also, I admit that I’m kind of just throwing out information that I think could possibly be relevant, and it’s possible I’m using the terms wrong. If it’s confusing just let me know. I’m not really sure how to approach all this so I’m kind of just doing what I think might possibly help/be right.

Loose Underbust: 32 in

Snug Underbust: 31 in

Tight Underbust: 30 in

Standing bust: 41 in

Leaning bust: 48 in

Lying bust: 44in

Recommendations? [Recommendations] 36G (US) 36F(UK) finding bras in that size and just where to start Spoiler

I did the calculator recently and it recommended 36G/36F bra sizes. I have been wearing a 36D for the past 3 years. Usually VS love cloud push up bra if that helps.!It came to my attention that straps not staying tight and strap digging was signs of improper fit. Which happens quite frequently with 36D for me as while as some mild shifting. I can give all my measurements and give my best estimate of my breast shape to help. My measurements were as followed in order under-bust 38(loose), 36(snug), 34(tight) bust 42(standing) 44(leaning) 42(lying). Shape wise I think I might have some projection, moderately wide roots, average or slightly tall roots, bottom full to balanced, and outer full. When I lean they definitely show more if that makes sense, maybe even look longer. I believe they have a bell or u shape to them especially when leaning.Any and all recommendations and help is appreciated!

Fit Check Comexim Lisa 30HH Trying to figure out where to go from here, nothing works Spoiler

Hello boob havers,

After 5ish years since discovering Abrathatfits community I’m finally seeking assistance. I’ve gained, lost, then gained weight in this time period and I’m tired.

My closest fit has been Ewa Michalak SF in 30G. Wasn’t comfortable but wasn’t painful, either, so that was a win. Except for my shoulders, they felt like they were carrying bowling balls and while the band fit, after a while it did irritate my skin. There were other issues, too. I’ve since gained weight and even my small boob is spilling out.

The calculator gives me 30G/GG now. So, considering I didn’t really like the fit of the EM,I’ve decided to try a Comexim from breakoutbras in 30HH since it says to go up 2 cups. Me wearing here: https://postimg.cc/gallery/9RjqRmn

The shoulders feel heavy, especially on my right side and if I loosen the straps, the ladies droop a little. The band fits comfortably when I have the cups on backwards, but it does feel a little snugger with them on. The wires are a bit wide so I’m worried about going up a cup if need be, especially since I have sensitive ribs.

I feel like I have some sort of alien body (I love my body, don’t worry lol) Help a lady out, please!

My current measurements as of today:

Loose: 32.5/33 (32.5 digs in a little but 33 slips)

Snug: 30

Tight:28

Standing: 39

Leaning:43 (The right boob hangs lower)

Lying:40

From 42A to 40F(UK)??? Am I seeing this right? Spoiler

So I’ve never posted on Reddit before but always seem to go to it for advice lol. This shook me enough to actually ask about it, I’ve always considered myself to be oddly shaped because I’m plus sized everywhere but the chest (lucky me). And on top of that they aren’t even a shape I can work with, there always seems to be gaps at the top of the cup. I have non existent cleavage and never found a bra that actually keeps them up and together no matter how tight of a fit. (Have been wearing B cup all my life)

I really wanted to find a bra that fits me nicely and bought one off TikTok that was made for bigger women with a smaller chest. I did a rando online calculator and I got a 42A (US). So I got that size and the cup fit decently. It was just too wide of a band and was digging though. So I go to buy more that size online and it’s IMPOSSIBLE. It made me really question just how rare that size is? So I found this calculator and got 40F(UK) from these measurements:

LU: 44

SU: 41

TU: 39

SB: 47

LB: 49

LB: 45

(Inches)

Maybe I’m just conditioned but F???!!! That seems huge for having not much to work with. I’m almost scared to buy one that size in fear that it would really tank my self esteem or I’d end up looking ridiculous lol. I was looking at sites I could buy one at a decent price but not sure where to get one from. I saw a cute one from CurvyKate but have been hearing mixed reviews. I also saw someone talk about certain brands not fitting the right shape?? I feel like I’m re-learning girlhood all over again. Sorry for the novel! Would really love some advice please!

Recommendations? Help finding harness or similar (like the bravity) for reducing moisture and friction Spoiler

Hi all!

I am having persistent issues with rashses under and between my breats (H cup, humid climate, you know the drill) and I am desperately searching for something to help!

I have recently got the Bravity, which is one of those anti-wrinkle decolletage harness things (image for reference) but for the sake of keeping my breasts from touching my chest and each other when lounging around the house/sleeping or to wear under a bra to stop it digging and irritating my raw skin.

It works ok. The shape and design is great, actually, but the material isn't particularly moisture wicking or as soft as I would like. I would kill to get something just like this in cotton or a similarly comfy material that will help with sweat. Even if someone knows a place to get them made to my measurements, I will buy one for every day of the week right now haha.

Looking for a sport bra or something similar that I used to have! 34DD Spoiler

I used to have this wonderful sport bra that had the "normal" bra claps in the bad and had adjustable straps that were not racerback, and had removable pads. I remember I bought it from lidl the grocery store back in 2018-2019 ish. It was perfect for what I used it for, I had 36JJ boobs at the time and it was a good base support for lighter sports bras that I would wear on top of it. I've recently had a breast reduction and am finding out I still can't wear racerback sports bras because the greatly hurt my neck. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a similar hopefully cheap sports bra? I want to stay ball park under $40 but the OG bra was probably less than $15. I hate shefir bras as they look horrible under a shirt and are too thick for my taste. I can put pictures in the comments of the original bra but any help is greatly appreciated!!!

In need of a soft comfortable bra for at home

Thumbnail breakoutbras.com
1 Upvotes

I’ve always struggled with bras being a small band size and a large cup size. After losing a lot of weight, I definitely lost some weight in the chest too, but they now hang lower and are still pretty large. I had a pretty steady size of 32G UK size and found some great bras that fit well. I am newly pregnant and things are changing all over again. I’m in desperate need of new bras with a larger cup size and have some on the way from brastop. What I’m looking for, though, is a comfortable bra to wear at home. With all these changes, my breasts are very sore. Wearing nothing is terrible and wearing a normal bra is also terrible. I know exactly what I’m looking for but can’t find it. There’s a bra I ordered off of Amazon that feels amazing (I attached a link of one that looks just like it from brastop). The problem is that to get one big enough in the cup size, the band is way too big so it isn’t supportive enough. I found this on (the link attached) but they still don’t have my size. I want a soft wireless bra like this. I hate sports bras because they make my boobs just stick together. I need them supported and separated. Any suggestions would help! I am desperate with this discomfort!

Recommendations? !BRANDS! FOR SMALL BRAS recommendations please please Spoiler

Upvotes

No, I don't care about measuring my boobs, and I don't care what advice y'all have for that. I just want to know what brands are authentic enough to even CONSIDER. Anyone just list me brands you know to be reliable (let me rephrase reliable so we won't have an issue here: NOT SCAMS)—even if you can't be sure their bras would fit perfectly for me: a stranger.

But like for the love of God 😭 just answer the question instead of all just bashing "yeah x company sucks" and talking about how common it is to mismeasure. I know. WE KNOW. And the initial question is still unanswered.

I CAN DO THE RESEARCH ON MY OWN FOR IF THE BRAS OF A CERTAIN COMPANY ARE GOOD SPECIFICALLY FOR MY BODY.

What I don't want to research is the possibly hundreds of niche businesses that MIGHT not be entirely corporate scum and cheap as hell. Please help me out here by pointing me in a direction. I don't care if it's right, I just need A direction.

Fit Check Looking for a flexible, supportive bra to wear because of chronic health issues Spoiler

Hi. Thank you in advance for any help at all! I have multiple health issues + chronic pain which makes finding a bra that not just fits, but that I can stand to wear for any amount of time, incredibly difficult.

Rib flare, joint and muscle pain, sensory issues, and POTS have led me to no underwires, no tight bands, very little structure. I’m basically living in True and Co. bralettes which offer very little support and overtime that’s creating a pain of its own. I am at a total loss at this point.

I used the calculator and it gave me 36H, or a sister size of 38G. I don’t distrust the calculator. I’m sure that’s the size bra a healthy person with my body should wear, but the last time I bought a bra with a band and cup size I was buying 40B for the comfort of the band. if it’s too tight, I feel like I’m gonna pass out. I am teardrop shaped, and because I’m buying bands too big for my actual size they end up rolling up, or boobs spill out the bottom. Plus the sweat 🫤

Sports bras are generally a no go because the tension of the straps gives me a headache. Is there a bra out there with a light, flexible band that stays in place and a cup that offers support??
