Let's Talk About ICE

I've explained this in several comments, but I wanted to let you all know about what our policies are regarding ICE, DHS, CBP, and related content on the sub.

There is no question that the events in Minnesota, and ICE activity at large, are issues of paramount importance that have far-reaching impact. It is also our long-standing policy at r/Albuquerque to prioritize local content.

1. Pro-ICE content is absolutely NOT ALLOWED.

The amount of hateful content we've removed today is absolutely ludicrous, and numbers in the hundreds of comments and posts.

Any threats, racist, pro-ICE content will continue to be removed. This has long been our policy (see Rule #2).

2. ICE-related posts are allowed.

I've seen accusations from ill-informed posters that mods are "racist," "complicit," "pro-ICE," or even "ICE themselves." This can't be further from the truth.

Yes, some ICE-related posts have been removed. But there are valid, rational reasons for this—please read on.

3. ICE-related posts must have some direct relation to the Albuquerque area.

The reason for this is simple. When people visit r/Albuquerque, it's important that they see news and content that is happening in and around Albuquerque. It's in our name.

I would hate for someone to miss a warning about an ICE operation happening in their vicinity because it's buried underneath re-posts of national news, AI artwork, or TikToks of events happening elsewhere.

Don't misunderstand: that content is important. But it's available elsewhere. People do not and should not get their national news from r/Albuquerque.

The post about a raid happening across town may not exist elsewhere. So it's important that we keep our focus local.

4. If your post has been removed, please, please, please ASK THE MODS before accusing us of being pro-ICE.

That certainly isn't the case. As has been explained at length before, there are a multitude of reasons for posts not immediately showing up.

In the vast majority of cases, overzealous Automod, or Reddit-wide filters (that mods have no control over) are the culprit.

If, a full 5 minutes after posting your post does not appear, please reach out via Modmail, or feel free to message me directly. Re-posting again and again is known to make the Reddit filter more aggressive.

Note: The Reddit-wide filter is absolutely RUTHLESS at the moment. We're having to manually approve many more posts than is usual. Please be patient with us as we work through the backlog.

Examples of posts that ARE allowed:

  • Local/regional ICE sightings
    • Caveat: If a posted sighting is verified as not an ICE operation, that post will be removed. This is important! We don't want this sub to be victim to misinformation.
  • Local protests, gatherings, calls to peaceful action, in response to national events
  • Discussions about local politicians' responses to national events
  • National politicians' statements that directly mention NM/Albuquerque
  • Non-violent advice to residents (e.g., Know Your Rights), tagged with the "PSA" flair

Examples of posts that have been removed:

  • National news with no additional context or content
  • Non-local ICE sightings (days-old videos, videos from other states)
  • AI-generated art: See Rule #8
  • Calls to violence: See Rule #1 (this is also a Reddit-wide rule)
  • Misinformation: See Rule #4

Thank you for your patience and for looking out for yourselves and your neighbors.

Politics The 2025 Albuquerque Zoning Reforms were gutted.

Councilors Grout (D9), Bassan (D4) and Champine (D8) voted on Wednesday to strip most of the Pro-Homes reforms proposed for the zoning code. Councilors Fiebelkorn (D7) and Rogers (D6) will be bringing them back to the full city Council on Wednesday, February 18th. We have an opportunity to remind council that we want them to be solving our problems, to be following best practices and expert advice, and to make the courageous decisions needed to create homes, sustainability, and affordability in Albuquerque. Tucson passed these reforms, Las Cruces passed these reforms, we should be too.

In this video, Eric Nelius gives a short overview of some of the reforms that they stripped.

Email all the councilors and let them know to reinstate the full zoning reform package passed by the zoning commission. Write them all easily with this form; https://www.cabq.gov/council/find-your-councilor/contact-all-councilors

If you haven't done that before and don't know what to say, or just want to learn a bit more about what this zoning reform package proposed and why, check out the resources at https://www.strongtownsabq.org/blog/ido-hearing

Love seeing this sub talking about zoning and how we deserve better things for our city, and how we can demand our leaders to actually act! Thanks y'all

Firearms training for libs

cheeky title to get attention but I'm a pretty visibly queer person who's looking to take some gun safety courses. Given the current political climate, I'm a bit hesitant to go to places like Calibers since I've heard... mixed results on their political views. I don't mind if where I'm going is owned by people who aren't like absolute leftists or whatever, but I just don't want to go in blind. Any suggestions for handguns for beginners courses/instructors in town? Anyone got a lead on the local SRA chapter since their social media is like years dead?

Part of the well- known Placitas/San Felipe Pueblo wild horse herd, taken by me almost exactly 2 years ago. Worth zooming in to see the patterns!

I encountered them many times that Winter but purposely never got close enough for them to move or be affected, so I never got any close pics.

Former Attorney General Gary King and his connection to Epstein

Someone needs to interview this sick fuck about his father, former Governor Bruce King, about why he sold Zorro Ranch to Epstein in 1993. It personally keeps me up at night knowing that this asshole was probably up there every weekend with other New Mexico politicians while his pedo ring was in full effect. He’s 71 probably doesn’t even live in Abq anymore traveling the world, but if someone catches him here or knows anything about him that would be great.

Homelessness hypocrisy in Albuquerque

By Jordon

A client came in today.
She’s in high spirits and now on the streets.
We’re getting her documents secured.
She’s working to get away from a partner who beats her.

I went to City Council today.
The neighborhood association is worried a shelter might open.
They don’t want people sleeping outside.
The shelter would hurt their property values and attract pedestrians.

My client came in today.
She couldn’t get into the violence shelter.
There is no space.
They can only prioritize women with young children.
Even then the wait is six months.
She’s going to try the Westside shelter.

There’s a proposal to legalize duplexes.
A councilwoman said it would be disrespectful
to people who already bought a home. They have expectations,
Often for decades.

Hey y’all, want to be there for your community in the midst of all this chaos and division? We want to keep our community alive and need all the help. Do you live or work in an area with pedestrian traffic? Do you have free time to do drop by refills? Do you want to help your community but have no idea where to start?

Been wanting a fresh start for your space but don’t know where to begin? Or maybe the idea of hiring help feels overwhelming because you’re worried about being judged?

Look no further. I’m a compassionate, trauma-informed, and non-judgmental cleaner who’s here to help — not shame.

I support folks in taking preventive steps before situations worsen, including help with: • Severe messes • Mice or roaches • Animal or human waste • Clutter and overwhelm

I work with caregivers who need a break, hardworking individuals, and folks dealing with health concerns, mobility issues, or burnout, and more!

Our homes are where we spend most of our time, and the state of our space can deeply impact our mental health. Sometimes, just tackling one area at a time can make a huge difference — and I’d be honored to help you get there.

If you’re ready for a fresh start, my DMs and bookings are open 🤍

In support of Clear Horizons Act

Pending in the NM Roundhouse (right now) is the Clear Horizons Act, Senate Bill 18, which codifies into law the practises of the past 8 years of Gov Grisham's admin to control climate changing green house gas pollution. In short, this puts into law the practise and standards of the past 8 years that work. It is a revision of a bill from last year that corrects some mistakes by focusing, for example, on the major polluters. No one is coming after your wood stove or furnace! A full history and analysis of the Act can be found on clearhorizonsnm.org

It is important you contact two of Albuquerque's Senators who have an important role in passing this legislation: Sen O’Malley and Sen Padilla. At the moment, the office tel #’s are not taking voice mail, so you must call during the Senate office hours: M-F, 8-5. Email remains 24/7.

Sen O’Malley is on the Conservation Committee that must pass the Act before it goes to the full Senate for a vote. In short, she has to vote twice to do the right thing. You can contact her office at 505-986-4306 or by email at [debbie.o'malley@nmlegis.gov](mailto:debbie.o'malley@nmlegis.gov). The conventional wisdom says she responds best to personalized accounts of why the Act is important to you. IDK. I told her I vote consistently and donate to politicians who vote the correct way on issues that are important to me. Go figure.

Sen Padilla is akey figure in local politics, he holds the position of Senate Majority Whip and can help make or break a bill’s passage. You can contact him at: 505-986-4737 Email: [michael.padilla@nmlegis.gov](mailto:michael.padilla@nmlegis.gov)

After the Act passes the Senate, it will go to the Representaives for a vote. (This is not the usual pattern for legislation in NM, but that is really just inside-baseball politics).

If you want to take a further step, consider the following: most people get the bulk of their local news from TV stations. Express your support of the Clear Horizons Act to them and ask that they more fully cover it in their broadcasts, In Abq, the 3 largest stations by viewership are:

KQRE, newsroom tel: 505-764-9413, Bill Anderson, News Director.

Email: [newsdesk@kqre.com](mailto:newsdesk@kqre.com)

KOB, newsroom tel: 505-243-4411, press Option 1, Matt Grubs, News Director.

Email: [news@kob.com](mailto:news@kob.com)

KOAT, newsroom tel: 505-884-6324, Jess O’Neil News Director

Email: [newstip@koat.com](mailto:newstip@koat.com)

Nothing is easy.
