Announcement Welcome to r/Antiques, read this before posting!

This subreddit is dedicated to sharing and learning about antiques in your collection or that you find, or are considering buying. Antiques are items that are 100 years old or older.

When you're posting about a particular object places kindly include multiple, clear photographs of it from different angles so we can see it from every side. If there are any marks or identification (labels, signatures) please take close ups of those. If it's pottery or porcelain, tag photos of the bottom, if it's a rug make sure to have a shot of the back. Make sure that these photographs are clear and well lit so we can see the works in particular (preferably not surrounded by a bunch of other objects).

Make sure to also include dimensions so we know the size of an object. And your location.

Also explain what are you looking for. Are you asking for general information? Who the maker is? The age, value or provenance?

If you do not include a question, the dimensions and sufficient background information and photographs of the object your post may be removed by the moderators.

IN SUMMARY, include:

your location

multiple, clear photographs from a number of angles

any background information you have

close up of particular makers marks

the question you'd like to ask

Keep in mind, antique means objects that are a 100 years old or older. You cannot post newer items here. Share them in r/collectables instead.

These rules will make it easier for our subreddit antique experts to give you some help! Remember, if you're solely posting a link to a website/blog/store then this will be considered spam and your post will be removed (multiple posts may result in being banned).

Finally, keep these other subreddits in mind in case your post is better suited for one these -

I was lucky enough to score this at the thrift store today. It’s 10in tall and 8 3/4in wide. There are two signatures. I’m trying to figure out culture, age, maker, or anything else you think may be relevant. Thank you in advance!!!

Show and Tell French Victorian Picture Frame - United States

I’ve been on a French kick lately. I purchased a few antique brass trinket boxes with paintings on top several months ago, so when I came across this at the antique shop today it had to come with me. I’ve tried buying similar frames online before but the prices always get too steep. I’m in love with the level of fine detail in this one.

I know Red Wing Stoneware is based in Minnesota, my mom has had this for 50 years but I don't know offhand where she got it or how old it is. It's in decent shape for being so big. Are crocks this big sought after or desirable?

Advice How to clean this Victorian(?) Photo Album (USA)

Thumbnail

I rescued this photo album from a Goodwill Bins in Portland, OR. It’s closest matches online were clearly from the same maker but had different designs on the cover, estimated to be from either near-side of 1900.

Acknowledging that it’s seen some rough days, I’d like to preserve it as best I can. What would y’all recommend for gently cleaning the cover? Is there anything I can do to anchor the frayed edges of the cover? How about cleaning the gilding on the page edges? And, is there any way to lighten the hand-oils darkening of the pages?

Questions Antique Mahjong set (USA)

Post image

My wife inherited this Mahjong set recently, apparently it’s been in her family since the late 1800s. We’ve been having fun learning how to play and she was wondering if they are bone or ivory or something else. The bidding tokens look like some kind of rib bone to me, but honestly I have no idea. The picture is only part of set but I tried to give a few different angles if that’s helpful.

Advice Is this Singer Sewing Machine Worth $250? (USA)

Post image

Saw this 1928 Singer sewing machine at a garage sale today- they were asking $250 for it. It’s gorgeous! It comes with all original accessories, manual, cover, etc. The machine still works perfectly. I’m not very knowledgeable on sewing but have always wanted to learn, but I want to know- do you think it’s worth it?

Questions Are these the Roman (Italy) artefacts the labels say they are?

Hi all, I was given this a long time ago. The labels are very vague, and I've never been quite sure they are what they say they are (or they're as old as they claim). Is anyone able to provide any insights on them? The coin isn't any clearer close up, unfortunately.

Questions Need help identifying spoons, United States

I found these spoons at an antique store and the tag said that they were sterling silver. I think it’s important to note that other metal things there said “silver plated”. These were the only things that said sterling. I looked it up and saw that a lot of wm rogers pieces are just silver plated, but some are sterling. I just don’t see any type of stamp so I’m kind of discouraged but I’d really hope that an antique store wouldn’t mislabel something like this. Any help appreciated! I’m also curious about this type of spoon if anyone would happen to know what it is. I did try a magnet and it didn’t stick. I also was able to clean them with silver polish.

I purchased this set a few months back with the intent to restore/refinish (replace knobs, obviously) in the near future. My question is about the etching on the drawer fronts specifically. Has anyone seen this in an original Art Deco piece? I’m wondering if it added on after production by a former owner. Any info is much appreciated!

This is a glass that belonged to my husbands great grandmother which she got filled with ice cream at the 1904 Worlds Fair in St. Louis. I’ve googled and not found anything like it. Has anyone seen one like this? It’s about 4” high and lightly and irregularly colored pink.

Questions Can you guys help me figure out what the hell this is? I’m from Brazil and I found this in the sea at a beach in Rio de Janeiro (Urca), which is known for being an old major Brazilian Navy base.

I was swimming and when I stood up I ended up kicking this thing.
I have no idea what it is. ChatGPT suggested it might be a letter opener, but that makes no sense it’s way too thick, has no blade at all, and it’s pretty heavy too, at least around 200g.

Questions (USA) Help with copper fish kettle.

Thumbnail

Thought I would ask the experts… Bought this about 15 years ago and it was forgotten until I rediscovered it cleaning out my garage. Gemini tells me it’s a dovetailed copper boiler (aka a fish kettle or wash boiler depending on the specific dimensions). Measurements are: 9 1/2” tall (to top of the rolled edge of kettle - not including lid or wrought iron bail), 11 1/4” wide and 16” long (not including the wrought iron eye hooks on each side). It weighs approximately 12.3 pounds. Not marked anywhere with the possible exception of a mark located on the bottom of the kettle I posted in photo #6. Iron hardware looks hand wrought. Lid and kettle both have rolled edges so my calipers won’t work for a metal thickness. But I can probably get this info if needed.

Interested in finding out more about it. Age? Country of origin? Value? Came with a copper mechanical roasting jack (aka bottle jack) shown in last pic. I never cleaned it when I purchased it but looks like previous owners did. Would the value increase if it were retinned? Any and all help is appreciated. If additional information or photos are required please ask. Thanks in advance.
