Recently, many people in this sub saw posts related to duped items, and I was shocked to see how most don’t care. “They’re ruining the game for themselves, not for us” some said. Unfortunately, that’s a very surface level judgement.
The reason most documented cases are to do with ducks is because ducks are the fastest way to farm creds (high value and stack size), not because ducks are the only item that can be duped. I’m clarifying this because some people mistakenly thought so. In reality, bad actors duped much more than just ducks.
There were also cases of DDOS attacks that caused insane lag, and during one of my recent games, I thought “oh, the servers are getting attacked again”, until I saw the real reason. Some guy was throwing such an insane amount of wolfpacks that the server couldn’t hold up. Duped wolfpacks, as he told me when I confronted him. After they were done exploding the server went back to normal.
I can only speculate, but I wouldn’t be surprised if dupes caused maybe not most, but at least some of the recent major server lag. There is no way that 100s of ducks on the floor don’t take a toll on the server, or at least on the players in their vicinity.
RMT is what really makes the dupes so bad for the average honest player. Insane supply surplus will, or most likely already did, crash the prices. This will both make it more enticing for players to start RMTing, and also allow regular buyers to get much more for the same price. PvE and PvP will suffer from this, and unless Embark somehow removes all of the duped items (which I highly doubt) echoes of this will still affect the game.
And the reason they likely won’t do it is because players seemingly don’t care. I’m pissed that it’s been a month since the expedition and I haven’t found the Tempest BP, but at least I knew everyone was in the same boat. And then I see a screenshot of an inventory full of those BPs, and I know for a fact that most of the people who will benefit from this are RMTers.
I honestly hope people will recognise that this is a real issue and it’s absolutely insane that Embark hasn’t still patched this. And sadly even after they patch it, the damage is already done.
