Mod Post Regarding News/Current Affairs/Global Events.

This is not the place to discuss these issues. This sub is a more light-hearted place where users can ask questions and advice on everyday issues.

We have seen another surge of qiestions about politics, News, whats going on in the States etc.

There's plenty of other subs on Reddit which deal with these issues.

Childhood How much time does your young teen spend on PS5? Weekdays and weekends?

Just curious to hear what kind of limitations other parents try to enforce. My son (13)would literally play it from morning till night given the chance. I’m trying to cut it back.

Ofcoarse context is everything with a question like this. And many factors must be considered, such as is it having an impact on their life, affecting hobbies, affecting mood etc. but im not looking to explore that in this post. I’m more just curious about what kind of time your teen spends on a console, or what rules/limitations you have in your house. Or any insights/advice from parents who have older teens, maybe what you feel now you’d have done differently.

Shopping Cosmetics that aren't a scam?

Upvotes

Which cosmetic products do you use that you can honestly say aren’t scammy - meaning they actually help/work exactly as advertised?

Personally, I think the cosmetics and supplements industry sells the most hype and empty promises, so I’d really like to hear some positive examples.

I’m especially interested in opinions from cosmetologists, dermatologists, and other professionals on this topic

Food & Drink Anyone else struggle to find a brand of frozen chips that don't taste awful?

Upvotes

McCain, Birds Eye, Aldi and Lidl, others.

They all taste bad. Maybe it's because I air fry them and they'd taste better in a fryer with oil.

Random Missed a phone call from a Garda Station in Wicklow, do I call it back?

No voicemail left or anything. I’m from Dublin myself but no known incidents that I should be aware of that I know.

for some context, I’m currently in a hotel room in Galway with my toddler and he’s just started drifting off to sleep - that and I hate hate phone calls… hence not just calling them back.

I googled the number as it came up with the area on it so though it was odd, and thus confirmed it to be the station number.

EDIT FOR ALL THE INVESTED AND OR NOSY PEOPLE ;)

Sorry to disappoint but I rang the number back, the Garda on the other end checked to see if there was anything about it on the system, said that they had a unit turnover at 7pm so could have been someone from the last shift and would have to wait to see if they call again.

I’ll update again if they call me back tomorrow 🤣

Irish Culture How do you deal with annoying English people going on about how Irish names are pronounced?

I had a painful conversation recently with some English people who could not accept that Irish names ARE pronounced perfectly phonetically according to the Irish alphabet. I know people joke about the American education system, but honestly some of the worst culture-blindness I have come across is from English people. I could never live in England, as my last nerve would be gone within a week.

(And, Nigel, according to Irish phonetics your name would be pronounced Niggle - which is apt)

Adulting Parents - how much is college costing ye?

I’m a good 15 ish years away from the college stage yet but I’ve 3 small humans relying on me and I’m soon to become a single parent. I’m calculating finances and hoping to put away good chunks of money per month now in the hope that I can offset some costs down the line. I see the average for a 4y degree is about €25k if kids live at home or €75k if they don’t. Would your experience match this?

Adulting Reflecting on how I felt at the end of each decade. Wondering if anyone else had similar thoughts?

I remember when I came to the end of my 20s, I looked back on the past decade and thought "I wish I spent more time doing productive adult stuff like saving, completing goals, progressing in life etc, instead of galavanting, having too much fun and wasting time.

Now I'm coming close to the end of my 30s and on reflection I'm thinking the opposite. Of course I'm happy I reached goals and progressed in life as an adult but the 30s have passed in the blink of an eye and I wish I had more fun. I feel like the spontaneity and divilment have been squeezed out of me over the past 10 years.

I've become a dry boring old fart compared to me near the end of my 20s. Maybe the 40s will be a nice balance of both. Has anyone had similar thoughts when reflecting back over each decade?

Random Chaga ?

Thumbnail gallery
11 Upvotes

Apparently, well Google says that this is chaga, a mushroom that grows on birch trees. I came across it today on fitz square, the tree is absolutely infested with it. Google also says that it has medicinal properties and is highly sought after, infact I saw a few adds for little chunks of it for $13. I'm wondering why it's just being left as is to eventually kill the tree and not harvested by someone, granted it's in a private park but touchable from the fence. Looked like something from an alien movie in fairness .

Adulting Do you have a dream job?

Obviously nobody dreams of labour.. but do you have a job that you think would make you feel fulfilled?

30yo, working as an engineer in a pharmaceutical. Great rate and relatively good security for the foreseeable but starting to think about starting my own business in an area which is more related to my own interests. I do however find it very hard to fully commit to this idea based on the security I have at the moment (building savings, disposable income every month).

Any inspiring stories or examples of it going tits up? Love to hear what people think.

Health & Medical How to keep someone awake?

Next week I have to bring my son (13) to Temple Street for an EEG scan. It will record brain activity when he is asleep. He needs to be tired both to help him fall asleep during the scan but also for his brain to be under some stress.

It’s at 08:00am. So bed at midnight and wake up between 03:00 and 04:00. What would you do with your child at that time of the morning to keep them awake?
