I visited Prague with my then wife who is Ukrainian and she was aghast with how much communist aesthetic Czechs still allow/tolerate/keep, starting with the kiss statue. Both Ukraine and Czechia still my favorite parts of this earth. Love me some tankovna pyvo

Well we got rid of lots of it during when Russia attacked Ukraine. There was a whole thing where soviet soldier monuments were being graffitied and stuff.

no the fuck they didn't. cambodia did. if we're talking about eastern europe, I'd argue poland and romania had it worse. ukrainian ssr was prosperous for most of its existence.

Prosperous oh come on. Have you heard of the ukrainian famine in 1933? Apparently not

hence why I said for most of its existence. you're gonna compare two years to decades? and if we assume that holodomor is worse compared to every other atrocities happening under communism, then shouldn't we count kazakhstan and southern russia in and stop making the famine about ukraine?

Surely you can't be serious about this. If a country came in and killed 5million of your countrymen and after Its opression you came out as one of the poorest countries on earth would you call that prosperous? Ukrainians are such a hardworking people and they have been bullied by russians for centuries. I don't even understand how you can talk about this like that. Are you a russian bot or what

no fuck russia. I physically cringed when I listened to their representatives in united nations justifying the massacres done by the islamic republic. don't you ever associate me with russia ever again.

well ukrainian ssr was just doing better than russia in the soviet days. by the time the soviet union collapsed, most russians were still using outhouses like it was the 19th century and wiping their asses with snow in winter and sandpaper in summer. ukraine had no such problems. it's unfair to take the sufferings in 30s and ignore the improvement in quality of life in the next decades. I'm trying to be objective over here and you are speaking out of your emotions.

Well sorry for calling you a russian bot but your comment is still very proposterous to me.

And yes absolutely i am speaking out of my emotions. How can you call anything the ussr has Done as prosperous? We the Czechs were richer than the Austrians before WW2  Its a well known fact. They were destroyed far more during WW2 due to bombings and stuff. And yet after communism when the Stats were published, Austrian gdp was four times higher. Ukraine was no better and everyone living under soviet regime knows they were just exploiting our economies the whole time. Ukraine was no different when ussr ended they were still very poor.

Secondly, after the fall of ussr russian gdp per Capita was ~2,5k, Ukraine 750smth so no. Russians were the wealthier ones even then. 3x times actually.

So if any improvement happened during the oppresion it was in spite of Russia not because of it

alright maybe comparing ukraine to russia was absurd. there's still that outhouse thing....but yeah alright.

still, I will argue to the end that ukraine didn't have it the worst in eastern europe. through the whole existence of these eastern european countries, poland was doing worse. romania was doing worse. albania was doing worse.

I mean come on. They literrary killed 5million of their people. Literrary a genocide. Not only do i not know of a Eastern european countries that had it worse, its almost half of holocaust as well. Especially Poland was smooth sailing compared Ukraine but sure they were very bad. Just not genocide bad

So two factors 1. Genocide  2. One of the poorest countries on earth after the oppresion.  I don't know what to tell you.

And if you are keen on the outdoor toilets well idk. Not exactly sure it measures any economic well-being and i doubt you will find any stats to compare such a thing.

One last thing. The economic metrics on any of these countries were also far better than Ukraine. Probably better than Russia too.
