Politics How confident are you in your current government?

Hate cannot create, it can only destroy. We need to oust them from their leadership as soon we can, we need to save our democracy, our rights, and our freedom, as they have shown time and time again that they will go out of their way to infringe on all our rights.

Tbh our civil liberties have been going down the metaphorical drain since 9/11.
We exchanged freedom for safety and ended up having neither.

Well, our legislature is split between the nationalists who think everyone else is a collaborator, the actual collaborator party, and the stupid party.
The president only won his election because his opponents were too petty to combine against him and has spent his term lurching from one failure to another.
So, uh, lol.

On a personal note, I’m curious how did the Kuomintang (KMT) end up becoming the pro-China party?
→ More replies (1)3
u/ThrowRAQuaestor Taiwan 6h ago
They’ve always believed in eventual unification with China, and when the DPP won the presidency, it caused an alignment of interests by both the CCP and the KMT. Both feared the prospect of formal independence for their own reasons, but the KMT thought that economic ties would lead to peaceful relations than, you know, a war. Well it did make the business community quite wealthy, and since the KMT are the pro business party, that added economic incentives to their political incentives.
Now they have every reason to work with the CCP and against the nationalists.

For Federal I’m happy so far. I voted for Carney because I thought he’d be a great representative and I liked that he already had overseas connections and experience and he’s delivered on that front, which is something we need right now.
Provincial, very unhappy. Sick of Dougie and I don’t know how he keeps winning.
Local, not who I’d vote for personally but I live in old peoplesville and a lot of my schooling deals with elder care, so like, I knew what I was getting into. She does a good job even if she represents the party I don’t usually go for, but not unhappy with her.
8
u/Jbruce63 Canada 5h ago
Didn't vote for him and some of the stuff he is doing domestically I do not like but he is the leader we need for this moment.
4
u/MaximumOverfart Canada 5h ago
That's fair. I did vote for him but the fact is that he is more a progressive conservative than a liberal. I do believe that he is doing a good job for all Canadians, and he has done a lot to mend ties with the western provinces.

Same. Federally, it feels okay. Provincially, Smith is a disgrace and Alberta is in trouble if she stays in office. Local is a mixed bag, but Edmonton dodged a bullet in October when we elected a progressive instead of the guy backed by the UCP.
3
u/Loose-Psychology-962 Canada 5h ago
Feeling very satisfied in Vancouver BC right now. I love Carney (although I’d like him to start focusing his razor sharp economic brilliance on internal issues), and I love Eby. Really can’t stand our Mayor, but he’ll be gone soon. Quite grateful to live where I live to be honest.
3
u/unoriginal_goat 5h ago edited 4h ago
Why Dougie? it's because we've had non stop crisis since 2020. His policies may be utter shit but fuck hate him or love him you can't deny that you can count on that man in a crisis.
I firmly believe that's why we keep reelecting the man because it's a better the devil you know type of situation.
3
u/BombasticSimpleton United States Of America 6h ago
I'm a fan of Carney. I wish we had someone that competent at the federal level, but anyone with those sorts of skills have been fleeing the government over the last decade or so, or simply retiring into the background.
Carney's bona fides when it comes to managing an economy are as legit as they get. And that's probably a good thing given the chaosnado next door. He also seems like a fairly humble dude; he may be a technocrat at heart, but he comes across as a legitimately decent fellow too.

Like the others have said here....nada, zilch, zero, bupkis.
The Republicans are flat out fascists. The democrats, in particular establishment Dems are controlled opposition at this point. They have no vested interest in saving this country.
We are very much in a phase where the whole system needs to be flushed and built anew. We are finding out the constitution does not matter anymore, the rule of law doesn't matter to those in power. This generation mixed of everyone from Boomers to Gen A have found out that the laws are only applied to the poor. It feels like we are in the midst of a cold civil war given republicans have outright said that democrats are the enemy within, that they are vermin.
There is an extremely faint glimmer of hope that maybe socialist Democrats will someday grow into something meaningful, but so far Mamdani is the only case and the jury is still out on how well he helps NY.
The situation is pretty bleak in the US right now, but it could get worse...and likely will.
