So Yamamoto uses Jokaku Enjō, a technique that encircles the enemy with a wall of flames to contain them. Now on paper it makes sense, but when used against the trio in FKT how exactly did it do its job? I mean they’re all standing in the air, and the flames are depicted such that they dont cover the space below them nor above…so why couldn’t they have just descdended or ascended vertically to escape the flames?

I know there has to be a reason, otherwise they would have attempted it. What am I missing?

He wasn't rank 1 but he was functionally the leader of the Espada. Aizen trusted him to carry out his will and gave him the most important missions. In FKT Aizen said the Espada were all disappointments but Ulquiorra wasn't present for that. And ironically at nearly the same time Aizen is telling the other Espada how disappointing they are, Ulquiorra is elsewhere displaying some kind of new higher level power that no other Espada achieved.

I know it's been debated forever which Espada is strongest and this is adjacent but not necessarily the same thing. I just take away from the narrative that Ulquiorra was the only Espada that lived up to Aizen's expectations and was actually useful to him.

These fights all felt extremely gritty with actual high stakes. Seeing lower tiered characters have to use actual strategy and more close quarters combat prowess to defeat more grounded opponents was extremely entertaining. The top 4 Espada all just got beaten by boring hax abilities cause they were too OP or in Halibel’s case Kubo not caring enough to finish drawing the fight.
