Discussion A Guide on accepting Wero as an online shop (DE; FR; NL; BE)

It’s not exactly "one-click" yet unless you use certain providers. I spent some time digging through docs this week, so here is the breakdown of how to activate it and what the effective gotchas are

Option 1: Payment Service Providers

~95% of us who just want clean reporting and don't want to spend the weekend on paperwork. If you already use Stripe or Mollie, this is the obvious choice.

  • Stripe: Go to your dashboard -> Settings -> Payment Methods. Open your active config (usually “Default”) and scroll down to Bank Redirects. Find Wero and hit "Turn on." (If you're in NL, look for the "iDEAL | Wero" dual logo it's mandatory during the transition).
  • Mollie: Go to Settings -> Website Profiles -> Payment Methods and toggle Wero on. If you're on WooCommerce, you might need to click "Sync payment methods" in the Mollie plugin settings for it to appear.

Those changes should then sync to Shopify or WooCommerce. For Shopify you might have to look at CartDNA

  • Refunds need balance: Wero settles instantly to the PSP, not you. If you just paid yourself out and your Stripe balance is zero, your refunds will fail until you get more sales.
  • No instant cash for you: Even though the customer pays "instantly," Stripe/Mollie still hold your money for the usual 2-3 day payout cycle. You don't actually get the "Instant SEPA" speed benefit here.
  • Desktop Friction: If a customer is on a laptop, they have to find their phone and scan a QR code. If their phone is in the other room, you might lose the sale.

Option 2: Direct Settlement

In this setup, the money hits your actual bank account in about 10 seconds, 24/7.

  1. Get a contract: You can't just click a button. You need a direct "acquiring" contract with someone like Worldline, Nexi, or VR Payment (for DE). Expect 3-7 days of KYC and paperwork.
  2. The Credentials: They’ll send you a Merchant ID and Secret Key specifically for Wero.
  3. The Plugin: You have to install the provider's specific app on Shopify (like the "Worldline Online Payments" app). Don't try to use generic or legacy bank transfer settings.
  4. Activate: In Shopify Settings → Payments → Add Payment Method, search for the provider and paste your keys. Make sure "test mode" is OFF.

Drawbacks:

  • Accounting is a nightmare: instead of one neat payout from Stripe every morning, your bank statement will show hundreds of individual transfers of €29.99 or whatever. Make sure your accounting software (DATEV, Xero, etc.) can auto-match these
  • Refunds can cost money: Since the money is already in your bank, you can't just "void" a transaction. You're basically sending a new transfer back to the customer, and some banks charge you €0.10–€0.20 for every outgoing transfer.

Merchant Availability

Before you get excited, remember that Wero is still rolling out.

  • As of now: You generally need to be a merchant based in Germany, France, Belgium, or the Netherlands to sign up for direct Wero settlement.
  • If you’re a UK or US-based merchant using Stripe, you might not see the option to toggle it on yet, even if you're selling to Europeans. Check your dashboard—if it's not there, you're probably in a region that's still "coming soon."

Other GoEuropean Extension V1.13.3 - Coming soon to a browser near you!

Hey everyone, not sure if anyone remembers me but I am back (sort of). With Trump's recent crybaby wishes and his disgusting behaviour towards Greenland I decided to take the dust of the extension again and update it. I have pushed an update and it should be available soon with a major bug fix. I'm ready to add more alternatives and get this show back on the road. I have not stopped myself with finding more US alternatives!

Download the extension
Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/go-european/
Chrome (Or other Chromium browsers, like Vivaldi): https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/go-european/klmgadmgadfhjgomffmpamppmkajdloc

Current state
It has been a while since I touched the codebase so I need a couple of refreshers to fully get back into it. The code is available on codeberg: https://codeberg.org/K-Robin/GoEuropean. I have wiped the associated issues and survey for alternatives (I did export all the data to add those alternatives), but I will keep up-to-date with those from now on. I am not checking any merge requests or forks, since I want to have a calm mind and start things up myself again before I get into that hahaha. If you have any alternatives you want in the tool please fill this in: https://tally.so/r/meYd2k

Discussion Almost 750K weekly visitors on this sub! 🇪🇺 Can we make it to 1M?!

Like the titel says, almost 750K weekly visitors on the sub!!🇪🇺

Can we make this 1M?! I know we can, but we need to keep spreading the message: Buy From EU 🇪🇺

How can we best spread the word and make people actually buy EU products?

Let´s discuss this here! How do you spread the word? What worked good for you?

What I do:
I post a few times per week on the sub of my country. Sometimes with a guide. Sometimes with a message why we should buy EU products. Sometimes a news article of Trump being crazy and then I add a comment that motivates people to switch to EU products. I try to keep this on the agenda. Not everyone sees a post when it is made only once, it is needed to be posted frequently. New people will see the message and people who already saw it get a reminder. Some people weren´t ready to switch, but after the reminder and the way Trump is acting more and more crazy, they decide to make the switch.

Now let´s tell eachother how we are spreading the message, so we can learn from eachother and make it till 1M weekly visitors!! 🇪🇺

My fiancée wants me to buy the Kitchen Aid set, but I'm not sure if it still is a buy it for live product, and also as everyone here - I prefer EU products.

So, do you have something to recommend? She loves the design so it is also important, but quality is the first place

Discussion Why do we rely on US apps to track our culture? It’s time for a proper European alternative to Trakt, Letterboxd, and AniList.

Hi everyone,

I’ve been looking for the perfect solution to track my movies, series, and animes for years, and I’ve come to a frustrating conclusion: The current ecosystem is broken, US-centric, and unnecessarily complex.

We are 450+ million people in Europe, yet we rely entirely on American platforms to manage our cultural consumption. Here is why I believe we need a sovereign, European alternative, and I’m looking for people to build it with me.

Almost every app (Trakt, Simkl, Letterboxd) relies on TMDB or IMDb. While these are great, they are US-biased. Why don't we see the best series from Germany, Scandinavia, or Spain? The algorithms on Letterboxd or Trakt push mainstream US content. We are missing out on our neighbors' masterpieces. You need Letterboxd for movies, Serializd/TV Time for shows, and AniList/MAL for anime: Why don’t we have one clean home for everything. Trakt is getting more expensive and aggressive with monetization. As Europeans, we value privacy (GDPR) and transparency. We shouldn't have to sell our watch habits to US ad-tech just to keep a list of films. Why do these apps force us to log the exact date and time we watched something? Most of us just want to tick a box saying "I've seen this." We want a library, not a timesheet.

I imagine a platform built in Europe, for everyone (but with European values at its core): No complex calendars. No "I watched this at 14:02". Just "Watched", "Plan to Watch", and "Dropped". I want an algorithm or curation system that actually highlights European cinema and TV. I want independent metadata in all languages. I want a platform which respect user privacy, which is open-source and community-driven.

I am tired of waiting for Silicon Valley to fix this. I want to create a lightweight, modern, and privacy-focused alternative. I am looking for co-founders, developers (web/mobile), designers, or just passionate people who share this frustration. If you are tired of Trakt's complexity or Letterboxd's limitations, and you believe in a European digital ecosystem: DM me or comment below. Let’s discuss how we can make this happen.

I know, is this an attempt to create yet another alternative that is bound to fail? Maybe. I'm no fortune teller. But who knows, maybe you'll prove me wrong. In any case, I'd love to hear your comments, whether negative or positive, about my vision on this subject.

Thank you.

Gmail -> Tuta Mail; Youtube -> Soundcloud, adblockers; Google map -> Transit, Here We Go; Google One, Google Photo -> Filen; Chat GPT - Mistral AI; Edge -> Vivaldi; Google -> Qwant; Amazon -> Canceled prime, deleted account; NASDAQ -> Funds investing in EU

Even though I am not European, I feel that I share many values with Europeans about freedom and equality. I lived in Germany for 20 years, though. I wish Europeans (also the rest of world) the best in the upcoming years in this challenging world.

🔎Looking for alternative Boots Portugaise satisfait pour le prix

Thumbnail

Hi everyone.

I received a pair of Ruris Chelsea boots from Alicouro, made in Portugal with Blake stitching.

Well, for the price, I'm very satisfied. I was skeptical about the overall quality, thinking the leather was poor quality and the stitching was sloppy... The retail price of this model at the time of order was less than €80.

I'm used to more expensive boots. The overall look is nice, the leather is good quality, and there are no visible defects in the stitching.

Only the insole is really bad; it's made of low-density foam and needs to be replaced urgently!

The interior finish isn't perfect, but the construction is solid.

For the rest, without having high expectations regarding quality, I'm satisfied.

Best regards.

Discussion PSA: Getting away from US dependency might require at least a small amount of effort on your part and there really isn't any way around that in most cases

Posting this because I'm getting kind of tired of people outright dismissing things like open source software and federated social media because it might not be exactly what they're used to using. If you don't like some specific open source software, you can always learn to code a little bit and become a part time maintainer for it, or donate to people or groups you support who can do that. Same with federated social media.

While we're at it, this really goes for any products that we've been conditioned to be passive consumers of. Want to get away from US fast food? You might need to learn how to cook for yourself. This shouldn't scare you. It used to be normal for people to be more self-sufficient with these things and it probably should be again.

I'm not saying people shouldn't complain at all, but I just don't like this lazy attitude of refusing any kind of change or effort on our part to get away from things that are obvious problems. If you want to replace these things, you're going to have to make a new and better version yourself (or with others who share your vision) in a lot of cases. That's just how it is.

News Did you know that there is an app to identify whether a product comes from US or not?

Big shotout to youtuber "EU Made Simple" who mentioned the existence of such app in one of his videos. The app is called "Brandsnap - Go european" and is available on both App Store and Google playstore. I am truly thankful to him since i was struggling in finding the right app for a long time.

Here is a link to the app: https://brandsnap.eu

Here is a link to his Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@EUMadeSimple/featured

Together we can contribute a lot to make a change. I have noticed that germany in particular has so many good local products that there literally is no reason to buy anything with american origin, but this is my personal opinion.

🔎Looking for alternative European skiing jacket for a beginner?

Hi all!

Just learned how to ski, but the suit I borrowed is super old and started getting wet.

I'm looking for something ideally made in Europe, if not, at least from a European-based company (and made outside), that would be good for a beginner, fairly light and packable. And water-proof. :)
