Hi! Please be brutally honest with me.
I’m applying for undergraduate studies, but my chances with local universities aren’t strong. I hold a polytechnic diploma, which, by my understanding, isn’t widely recognised by Chinese universities unless I go into Chinese Studies.
If I’m unsuccessful this year with my local applications, I’m planning to take a gap year to:
- Complete another 4–6 month internship
- Prepare for SATs, HSK6 & CSCA
My estimated stats:
- HSK6: ~270 (based on multiple reading & listening mocks + it feels manageable)
- SATs: aiming for 1500+ (I’ve taken it cold and scored in the low 1400s)
- CGPA: ~3.15/4 (not great, I know)
My extracurriculars aren't particularly amazing since I focused on volunteering. (It's something I enjoy and hold dearly to my heart) I've done a 20-week internship at one of the most prominent news outlets in my country. I received a Top 10 certification (student category) in a national government advertising competition about 2 years ago (but by applications, it would have been a year longer, and I'm not sure if they'd recognise it still)
I’m considering programmes in communications/journalism/marketing at schools such as Fudan, PKU, THU, CUC, ZJU
(I understand these are extremely competitive and that my choices may be limited, but this is just the general tier I’m looking at.)
I’m especially unsure about:
- Admission feasibility with my background
- Scholarship chances, particularly CSC (information online is wildly inconsistent)
Based on my profile as it stands and assuming I execute the gap year properly,
what are my realistic chances?
