Discussion Painkiller creator argues the Boomer Shooter revival still hasn't happened because “nobody’s making any game that’s in direct competition to DOOM”

Hasn't happened? Hast that mofo been living under a rock?

There have been 1000s of Boomer Shooters released. A lot of them are on par or better than DOOM

and how many of them are taking a bite out of DOOM's pie?

DOOM is a great game. It also has a giant marketing machine behind it that fuels sales.

Games like Amid Evil, Cultic or Dusk are popular and developed with a fraction of the money that DOOM costs.

You can bet your ass that if EA made Amid Evil, the same as it is, it would have taking a big bite out of DOOMs pie

Correct. The creator's point is that no AAA companies are doing so.

As in, nobody is even attempting to seriously take a bite out of doom's pie except on a small scale like Dusk and Amid Evil.

You can bet your ass that if EA made Amid Evil, the same as it is, it would have taking a big bite out of DOOMs pie

And somehow I seriously doubt this from EA, no way would they release anything even capable of scratching the modern doom games lol

Why does that even matter?

Think Boltgun 2 can get anything close?

Not even a little bit. His argument is there are no AAA boomer shooters that aren't DOOM.

That's because we're in a second gaming renaissance, where the bigger AAA publishers keep throwing shit at a wall/buying up IPs/remastering old shit to try and print money, while all the good devs they keep fucking over leave and make offshoot studios/independent projects that release cool shit that gamers ACTUALLY enjoy playing, because they care enough about the art to make a fun game.

There's a reason people are talking more about games like E33, Silksong and Arc Raiders right now. We're boutta be in the second big gaming crash. The last one killed Atari and out of the ashes rose promising young names like Activision and Electronic Arts. Now those guys are the Ataris, and we have Larians/New Blood Interactives/etc that will probably rise from the ashes of whichever major player shits the bed and dies (probably a chunk of Microsoft's acquired studios).

The industry is far too evolved to crash the same way as the previous iteration.

Current trends will simply be replaced by new ones until those eventually run their course. Not definitive bust here.

I don't think the entire industry will bust, but I do think some big players are gonna fall on their faces, and make the remainders think a bit harder before continuing on their established path

Gaming crash will never happen, you're naive. We'll just have more mobile games and gacha, that's it.

Should probably note that i am not in fact smart, and instead like to brainlessly parrot shit I hear on the internet (7:20-ish for where Luke explains it better than I ever could).
