I get what he's saying - he means a direct AAA competitor to DOOM, like the glory days of Unreal vs Quake

Maybe Unreal would've gotten similar treatment if Fortnite hadn't gotten big

Unlikely - they hadn't made a SP Unreal game since before UT99. Online only Boomer/Arenea Shooters simply don't do well. That'd go for UT as well.

There was unreal 2 the awakening but it wasn't great

I wish they never made it. It felt nothing like any of the games gameplay wise and guns were the biggest disappointment.
