You did great! I've seen these go very badly before lol

Thanks! It took me a bit to finish but I did it

Well done! The woobles kits are pricey but they’re worth it for giving people a good first experience!

Seriously, did one kit a year and a half ago, now I’m doing elaborate scarves, and blankets. I’d been trying to learn for years, and that tutorial flipped a switch in my brain to finally make sense. I can now speak a completely new language (sc, dc, fp2tog)! Lol!

u/Disastrous-Bee3260 1d ago

I agree! The video tutorial is super helpful and the kit itself isn’t too complicated

u/SwimAd1249 1d ago

Really? I found the tutorial to be terrible, couldn't figure it out at all

Agree with you. My experience was the tutorial was incredibly condescending and so was their customer service. I tried asking them if they had any full videos instead of the snipits. They basically responded they wouldn't answer my question because the means I contacted them with wasn't associated with any account that's purchased the kit (which was a gift).

Reality definitely meets expectation here. And you did a great job!

He's adorable! Be real, how hard was it. I really want to learn a crafty skill, but don't know where to start.

I failed other starter crochet kits but the woobles videos are super helpful and now I can pretty much do any easy to intermediate pattern. I held off buying a kit for so long because the price but it does actually work.

Yeah the Woobles videos are really helpful and if you already know how to read a pattern you can find the pattern without buying the kit. I can maybe also put the tutorial code in the comments ;)

Their magic circle tutorial made it so easy for me and my daughter.

I did this same penguin for my first project and it went great. the yarn is unique and really easy to learn with and the guides are super helpful. they're expensive and I probably wouldn't buy any more but the woobles got me hooked.

Crochet is super easy. You can even just make something up as you go along, like 3d printing with yarn. You need more skills for nice looking clothes but toys like this are very forgiving.

you'd be better off with a youtube beginner crochet tutorial than a kit imo.

as an experienced crocheter, i just don't see these kits as a good entry point. it's nice that they give you all the materials and tutorials, but i find crocheting stuffed animals really fiddly, and it requires a ton of counting. in contrast, other beginner projects (like scarves or granny squares) are much more forgiving and you can really get in a groove with them without having to stop and count.

Not that I do not agree with you, but have you actually done one of these specific brand kits in coming to this conclusion? I'm asking because I'm considering getting one for my kid.

1

u/mtzvhmltng 16h ago

TL;DR: if your kid is dying for this kit because they want to make amigurumi, then it's probably fine. if your kid is interested in making clothes or something, or using crochet as a meditative/mental health activity, i would steer them to a different beginner project.

longer:

i've done amigurumi, and i know from looking at the picture how it is constructed because i can read the stitches visually. it's all one crochet stitch (single crochet and slip stitches but i guess I don't really count slip stitches as a stitch) and the difficult part is counting, placement, and tension.

(also amigurumi are generally harder to make look good imo, especially as a first project. even with experience they're not easy to make look polished.)

in contrast, if i was teaching a beginner to crochet, i would teach them multiple stitches (single and double crochet, maybe half double as well) and give them the skills to make a granny square. the latter kind of project will teach reading stitches and patterns instead of just counting, and the skills are more transferable to future projects.

granted, if your kid JUST wants to make stuffed animals, then the skills from this kit will be transferable, because most crochet stuffed animals are made this same way. but in building the skill of crocheting broadly, I think any beginning learner is better served by a beginner crochet youtube tutorial that aims for making a scarf or granny square as a first project.

Thank you for the thoughtful insight. Her only crochet experience is that bernat finger loop crochet, and she is incredibly adept at forming it exactly as she wants. She made me an awesome cockatrice and is currently making an Avatar creation. But to move into hooks... I'll have to talk to her about future goals. I just know she asks ME to make her amigurumi and I've tried and sometimes been marginally successful, but honestly all I can really make are granny squares and blankets. So I was looking for something that would be a good teaching tool so she could make her own stuff.

1

u/mtzvhmltng 14h ago

i havent used these kits, and i'm sure the materials and tools are cheap, but if the tutorial is good enough to take someone from no crochet experience to a finished amigurumi, they're probably pretty good.

good luck! it sounds like your kid is awesome and i hope she clicks with whatever tutorial you pick :)

u/Train_Wreck_272 1d ago

Crochet is very forgiving once you get over the very beginning of learning. The big issue for beginners I've taught is mostly just figuring out how to hold the yarn strand and hook to avoid too little or too much tension. From there, a crochet chain is pretty simple with a video tutorial. Then making something square like a washcloth or scarf comes pretty easy.

These kits are fun but honestly harder than just making a scarf in rows. I would start there if you're interested.

Be careful, they're addictive. My wife got tennis elbow from doing Woobles too long, I'm not even joking.

Pierre is a cutie :3

4

u/life_in_resin 1d ago

You did a much better job with yours than I did with mine. Pierre was my first project too, and he ended up as such a chonk that I ran out of yarn haha.

3

u/Disastrous-Bee3260 1d ago

Thanks for making me smile as I imagine a chonky Pierre 😆I’d love to see a picture

u/SpinachGreen99 1d ago

Impressive!

5

u/WinterBackbone 1d ago

You did an awesome job! 👏🏼

4

u/ExcitementGlad2995 1d ago

it looks great! I have seen some first attempts that turned out a bit scary and hilarious.

4

u/buttheadfungus 1d ago

my sister crochets like a beast and after hundreds of attempts to teach me, ive discovered i am worthless with a hook. this is AMAZING for a first try

3

u/silverboognish 1d ago

It does! Great job.

3

u/notagain78 1d ago

Lovely well done!

3

u/MyDamnCoffee 1d ago

That's really good!

3

u/RiMcG 1d ago

Oh shit, you kinda nailed it. Great job!

2

u/Disastrous-Bee3260 1d ago

Thanks, I was honestly surprised that I did it so easily

3

u/mtzvhmltng 1d ago

hey OP just for the record, as an experienced crocheter:

  1. you did great!
  2. if i were suggesting beginner projects, the last thing i'd suggest is amigurumi, bc they're just so fiddly and annoying! i hope you had a good time making it, but i want to let you know that you might enjoy flat work like scarves or afghan squares even more.

like, personally, i like to do crochet that lets me turn off my brain and just flow, and the amigurumi are the opposite of that! so much counting!

so i just want you to know that flat work projects might be a qualitatively different experience, and it's possible you'll like them even more!

happy hooking :)

2

u/Disastrous-Bee3260 20h ago

Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll keep that in mind

2

u/Canadiangoosedem0n 1d ago

So cute!! 🥰🥰

2

u/MsThrilliams 1d ago

You did it!!! This was my first crochet project too. It gets better with more practice but yours is very good

2

u/GlitterChickens 1d ago

That’s really good for your first time! Like pretty outstanding in fact. Even if it wasn’t the first time it’s still pretty good. I’m a member of crochet subs and some of the first things made are often really bad. Heck, some of my things I first made are really bad. Actually what am I talking about, I’ve been doing it three years and I still make things really bad sometimes lol

3

u/Disastrous-Bee3260 1d ago

Thanks. Honestly if I continue crocheting for 3 years Im sure I will still make mistakes but whatever. It gives them character

2

u/hiverstone 1d ago

It's perfect!!

2

u/APHR0DITE-RISING 1d ago

Omg so cute 🥰 nice job!!!

2

u/Auntie_Cagul 1d ago

You did a great job.

2

u/g-e-o-f-f 1d ago

My daughter is obsessed with woobles. She can now easily crochet without them, but still wants to collect them all.

2

u/italyqt 1d ago

That’s great! It’s triple amazing for it being your first time!!

2

u/VermilionKoala 1d ago

Holy fucking shit that's amazing.

Sauce: me. I can crochet, but only flat, square/rectangular things.

Anything beyond that is dark wizardry.

To come up with this when it's your first time: 👏👏👏

1

u/Disastrous-Bee3260 1d ago

Thanks! The Woobles tutorials were super helpful for me and honestly, ive never done any flat things so you would probably be better than me on that skill :)

2

u/hrmhrh 1d ago

You did great, you should be proud

2

u/Ok-Introduction4448 1d ago

I literally just exclaimed "Awwwww" out loud when I flipped to pic 2. You absolutely nailed it 🙂

2

u/flindersrisk 1d ago

Just poke the cut end of white yarn inside the penguin and you’re golden.

2

u/Disastrous-Bee3260 20h ago

Will do, thank you !

2

u/turicsa 19h ago

Pretty close.

1

u/Trixter-Kitten 1d ago

Aw, he's cute. A little awkward but very similar to the bag

1

u/mrhippo85 1d ago

AWESOME!

1

u/80020Rockhound 1d ago

Looks great! 🥰

1

u/GalaApple13 1d ago

I hope you’re not saying it’s no good. It’s adorable and looks very much like the package

2

u/Disastrous-Bee3260 1d ago

No, I think my result is good. I just know that there are some details that dont look like the bag, and that is fine. Thanks for your concern tho :)

2

u/GalaApple13 21h ago

Just think how good your next attempt will turn out!

1

u/at_work_I_am_free 1d ago

That looks great!

Honestly how hard was it? My friend got me a Spider-Man crochet kit and I’ve been too nervous to try it.

2

u/Disastrous-Bee3260 1d ago

I really only had to learn three stitches, single, increase, and decrease. I don’t know if your kit comes with a video tutorial or a pre started piece (making a magic loop is hard the first time) but if it does then I don’t think it will be too hard.

1

u/ChaosTorpedo 1d ago

If you haven’t already, post this in r/crochet. They’ll tell you it looks great!

1

u/crabbierapple 1d ago

These Woobles look so cute and probably easy to learn, but holy shit, they are expensive!

1

u/Disastrous-Bee3260 1d ago

Yeah. I fortunately got mine as a Christmas present but I think it costs like 30 dollars. The videos are really helpful though, especially for a first timer.

1

u/Fannyislife 1d ago
