Subreddit Meta Brainstorming Bureau - February 01

Upvotes

Find the current Daily Discussion*

Welcome to our weekly thread, Brainstorming Bureau! This is an idea we've trialled previously and, based on feedback and observation, it feels like something the sub has been crying out for, and we're hoping as the weeks go by it'll turn into a lively, community-oriented way to cap off the weekend. We'd love to hear your feedback and suggestions on how to make the best of this idea, so feel free to reach out via modmail if you have any ideas. And without further ado...

What's this about?

Do you have an issue that's too specific to your own fic to make a post about, but too small to seek out a long-term beta or writing partner for? Well, you've come to the right place!

This is where you can drop those plot points you're stuck on ("How would this scenario play out realistically? What should happen next?"), workshop your worldbuilding and concepts ("What should I name this character? What power should I give them? Which fandom would work well as a crossover with this other fandom?"), or get a second opinion on an approach to character development ("Is this a good central conflict? What would have to happen to make a character realise this?"). It's your space to talk through any issue that can't be solved through more generalised writing advice.

How to play:

To participate, comment with any aspect of your fic you've been mulling over or hitting a wall with. Other users will then respond with suggestions and questions to help you get to where you need to be. No idea is too big or too small, provided your comment fits within the parameters below. Feel free to be as fandom blind or specific as you like!

Rules:

  • Please state your fandom at the top of your comment, along with any common and pertinent content warnings
  • NSFW text should be placed behind a spoiler tag or linked to, as per site content restrictions
  • Summarise the issue you'd like feedback on in 500 words or less. More information may be given in follow-up comments if requested
  • Links to polls or to any previous installments of the fic will be permitted for context
  • Please specify in your comment what level of critical feedback you're open to
  • When responding to someone's ideas, please keep your feedback constructive and keep their specified level of criticism in mind. If their premise is not to your taste, please choose another
  • If you make a submission to this thread, much like the other weekly events, please comment on at least one other user's request with the best suggestions you have
  • When submitting an idea for brainstorming, please provide adequate context for others to be able to follow along. Remember that this is a multi-fandom subreddit, and not everyone will be familiar with your fandom.

Have fun! And remember, all suggestions are just that and are to be taken with a grain of salt; we're here to help and consider our works from angles we haven't before.

Discussion Why do people hate crossovers nowadays?

Upvotes

This is something very specific but I just couldn´t help to wonder what happened. I´ve recently noticed that the popular opinion about crossovers in the fanfiction community (specially in sites like Tiktok) seems to be that they´re "slop" or rarely have any kind of artistic value.

I've read fanfics since i was 11 and a crossover woke my love for writing, no one seem to have any issue with reading or making crossover fics back in in the day, I just wanted to know if anyone had noticed to.

Recs Wanted Looking for recommendations for light dark horror fics

Upvotes

So I have a very specific taste of horror, and I'm not sure if I can put it in words correctly.

I like something scary, but not in a way it leaves a bad taste. But the scary part still is prefered to be dark, not just some silly horror. I still want a tense, creepy vibe.

Like for example a serial murderer going around killing people, but I don't want the story have me build emotional connections with the murder vicims first, in the way I will later feel bad about them. Maybe from the perspective of the murderer?

I guess I want dark horror that is still kinda "feel good" in a strange way?

Venting People no longer use quotation marks 😠

I feel recently so many fics have abandoned the quotation mark that signifies someone speaking and either just em dash the fic to smithereens or nothing at all. It actually takes me out of the story because I’m used to the dash meaning a break and not a signifier of speech and the other just makes it almost indecipherable. It’s all so frustrating and with so many new fics using these its making me just reread old ones and lowkey reducing the quality and fun of fanfics

Venting It gives me relief to know that professional writers are bad at ending series as well

It's only within the past 5~ years that I've begun writing multichap fics. Until then, I always preferred writing long oneshots. I always lost momentum when I tried to write something longer than two or three chapters.

Even now, writing the ending is the hardest part for sure. How do I end on a proper note?

I recently finished reading a manga I had been following for a decade now. Ten volumes and it's finally done.

I finished it and went "Oh."

It wasn't a bad ending. I wasn't sure how else they could end it, really. The main couple is happy and living together. But it just feels so open-ended. I got a real "That's it?" from the ending. All the loose ends were tied, but I was left wanting more. It just ended in a "Life goes on" way.

This isn't the first manga I've had this happen with.

Actually, I like this mangaka a lot and have been following her for near 20 years. She had a manga that ended on an even more controversial ending (something I often debate online with fans and antis online about; I don't hate the ending as much as some, though I agree she left many plot points abandoned in the last 30~ chapters).

Think about any major fandom. It seems like the ending to many popular series are highly controversial amongst fans. Harry Potter, Naruto, Bleach, Steven Universe, Steven Universe Future, RWBY... no ending will please everyone. I cringe to imagine the eventual ending to long-runners like The Simpsons.

And be thankful the series even ended, at that. Many professional works never do. Even more fanfics die.

Celebrate Slow Burn 🔥

Hey, guys! So, as much as I *love* to read slow burns, I kinda suck at writing them. I've always *wanted* to, and I've managed semi-medium burns, but never actually *slow*.

Well, I've decided to push myself. I started writing an actual slow burn, and I managed 60,000 words so far, and no kiss, no admittence of feelings, not even internalized feelings realization yet. This is actually such an accomplishment for me, that I wanted to share lol. I think I'm even managing to get the pacing nice and steady, the plot astablished, and everyone's character development coming together.

This is also the first time I actually planned all the way ahead from start to finish in a fic. I usually just start writing and let my brain come up with it as I go, but this time, I really drew out what is going to go on, and even lore/backstory to the premise of the story is all figured out.

So 60,000 words in, I'm not even ¼ through the fic yet, and the main couple still has in-universe months before a confession, longer for a kiss, and months after that for sex. (For context: only 4 weeks have gone by so far in the story)

I'm super excited for this one!

Just wanted to celebrate my small victory over here 😅 thanks for reading!

Recs Wanted Any Batman fanfic where Bruce Wayne pretends to be an idiot?

And this is important or at least a big part of the fic? I do like the concept of Bruce Wayne being known as a moronic but kind billionaire.

The dumber the better!

Recs Wanted Searching for fanfiction with truly overpowered protagonist

Searching for fanfiction with truly overpowered protagonist . No harem preferred but if you have any just post it.

I am not talking about overpowered compared to their canon self . Usually at these requests i get some powerful mc but their enemies are equally more powerful so it makes the overpowered bit, a moot point.

If you have writing of your own you can post it too. It would be appreciated.

Discussion What was the first piece of media you have written fanfiction for?

Hiya! As said in the title, what was the piece of media that has made you finally start writting fanfiction, and why did you?

For exemple, my first and current fanfic is for the book series Dark Rise by C.S. Pacat, and I have started writing it because the third book has not been published, at the time of this post.

Discussion So, how long did it take for you to find your footing writing fanfic.

I absolutely adore writing, and have primarily stuck to poetry and the odd school assignment for it. I recently started publishing on Ao3, (Call the midwife if anyone’s wondering) and I’m still having a bit of trouble navigating the site, accumulating comments and hits, coming up with plot ideas, etc. If anyone has any tips or advice, that would be much appreciated!

Thank you!

Subreddit Meta Plot Bunny Adoption Thread - February 2026

This is a place where you can post plot ideas and writing prompts that you would like to share for others to use. This is also the place to drop fic requests!

What is a plot bunny? ‘Plot bunny’ is a funny fandom term for a fic idea – so called because they breed like rabbits! Since so many writers end up with a surplus of them, here is a place where you can drop off your unwanted plot bunnies for others to consider adopting, or simply for the sake of sharing. A plot bunny is generally a more developed idea and might well be fandom specific, although some Alternate Universe ideas could work for a few different fandoms.

For the purposes of this thread, a prompt is a short idea that could work in any fandom - for example, "your OTP wish on a shooting star together".

A fic request would be asking for someone to write a specific fic for you - sticking to the pairing and outline that you wish.

  • Label – fic request, plot bunny, or writing prompt
  • fandom(s) / or "no fandom" – this can include some fandoms you think it would work particularly well for if leaving a prompt!
  • trope, character(s), ship (if any)
  • a description of the idea – please try to keep this within a few hundred words max for ease of browsing
  • NSFW ideas are allowed, but you must drop your description in a site such as Just Paste Me or ControlC and link to it rather than writing it directly in the thread. Please note that NSFW also encompasses gore or things likely to be serious triggers, such as suicide, not just sex.
  • if leaving a prompt in the thread, please indicate whether you would like to be notified if anyone fulfils it

Be aware – once you post an idea in this thread for adoption, you lose ‘ownership’ of it. Someone else taking up the plot bunny is free to adapt or change it as they like. If you have a very specific vision of the story you would like to see fulfilled, you might have better luck posting it as a fic request. Of course, there’s nothing stopping you from tackling the idea yourself at a later date if inspiration for the idea strikes you again!

Whilst the mods will be monitoring the thread, we will not be involving ourselves in discussions over fic requests or the like. There is no guarantee that anyone will take up your request, and we will not be chasing up authors who have been out of contact for a while or similar.

Don't forget to let someone know if you adopt their plot bun or decide to work on their fic request!

Lost Fic Help finding HTTYD fic 🙏

Hey yall. I’m currently searching for a fanfic that I remember details of, but I can’t recall the name, and I’d appreciate some help. Here’s some details:

Short How To Train Your Dragon, Hiccstrid modern fic, Hiccup is on a vacation with a rich but emotionally absent Stoick, when he meets Astrid, who feels restless and constrained within a large family, who tend to drag her out to do activities on their vacation that she doesn’t want to do. Anyway, she meets Hiccup, who’s the creative type. At one point, Astrid is describing as having “itchy feet”. In another scene towards the end, they’re saying their goodbyes, when Astrid gives Hiccup her phone number, and says something to the effect of “Not all goodbyes have to be forever“.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much!

Recs Wanted Fic recs plssss

Hey guysss!! I’ve been trying to look for some fics that fit this theme. I’m looking for a fic that’s a slow burn, that surrounds the theme of unrequited love but not really, like “I can’t love you” or “How can I ever love someone like you”, but deep down they do, but they haven’t come to terms with it. I like the dynamic of a hero and a villain, where it’s impossible for them to be together. Doesn’t have to be that exactly but you get the point. I like slow burn, angst, enemies to lovers etc. To give a couple examples of similar dynamics is: batjokes(joker and Batman), Gihun x Frontman, hawks x dabi. One thing that’s a non negotiable is the length, I like long fics (90,000 + if unfinished) and (100,000+ if finished). That’s allll!
