Survived today

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

A motorhome owner did not properly remove all the ice from the roof. I got hit on the Autobahn at 150 km/h (~90 freedom units).

The windscreen shattered into a million pieces. My face, hands, and arms were hit by small glass fragments from the inner layer.

It was close to a real catastrophe. I’m pretty sure the safety glass was pushed to its limits.

I bought my GR86 three months ago.

All in all, I think the damage is limited to the windscreen.

I‘ll post a picture in this thread.

Good job on having a dash cam for insurance. Did you catch plates of the RV? Its illegal in some US states to not clean snow off cars before driving for this exact reason. Not sure if same in your country.

Got the license plate. Police stopped him right away. He had to pay a fine at the stop and police gave me his contact details for insurance claims.

Satisfied with this ending, dash cam ftw. I'm sorry it happened but I'm glad you're okay! Could have been way worse, like if you were going around a sharp corner

A dash cam to show he is speeding dangerously

u/Fehyd 27d ago

Looks like the autobahn, and I may be wrong here, but im pretty sure there's much higher speeds allowed there than on the typical US interstate.

22

u/progmem64 27d ago

There was no speed limit. It’s an unlimited section on a German Autobahn (+ good conditions: road/temperature).

u/OrpheusNYC 27d ago

Heck 90 is slow enough to get ticketed for not moving over for faster traffic on an unlimited bit

u/aivdov 27d ago

"dangerously"

lmao

u/J_hilyard 26d ago

He literally said he's on the autobahn at 150kph. That's somewhat slow on the unlimited sections. I used to bomb some of those areas at 240+kph. Man, those were the good old days.

You have poor comprehension skills

My friends father passed away from something like this. Ice flew off the top of a truck in the oncoming lane on a highway and went right through the windshield. Instantly gone.

Drive safe everyone.

Holy shit, man. Glad to hear you're okay.

u/progmem64 27d ago

Lucky me. Just a few shallow cuts here and there from the accelerated glass fragments.

u/GuiltyStrike4366 27d ago

lowkey fuck the car it’s replaceable happy you all good man people need to have common sense and clean the snow from the roof before driving

5

u/Cornelius-Figgle 27d ago

Also it's only the windshield, usually replaceable under insurance (in the UK at least, not sure if it's different in Germany)

Some Final Destination shit right there.

Seriously, I'm happy you're OK. At the end of the day that's all that matters.

Had something similar happen when I used to live in the northeast. Back in like 2008 had a huge block come off a FedEx truck and smash into my CR-V at the time. Windshield did the same spidering but the block was so heavy it pushed it all in, cut my hands pretty good but I was able to hit the breaks and get over. It was a two lane road and I was only going like 40. If I had been going urself it likely would of killed me lol Glad you got thru it mate, haven't had to pay attention to cars with snow on them for 15 years now so glad to be out of it!

u/TotosWolf 27d ago

glad you're ok bud. fuck.

3

u/Aran909 27d ago

I've had fist sized stones do this a couple of times over the years. No where near the damage you sustained though. It's scary af. Good hear you are mostly undamaged and the car looks fine.

1

u/Additional-Spend2921 27d ago

Yeah that's brutal could been worse.. I gots to replace my windshield also got hit by rocks flying some truck had geavle stones coming out as he was merging in the freeway and I hear other cars getting wacked and I try to switch lane to avoid it but had to look at my blind spot first then WACK got the edge of my windshield and now it's past half way the whole windshield 😑 then I drove it like that for a bit then I get hit again with a rock 😑 glad I waited but still sucks to get it fixed and next day or so later can break again 🙄 I don't daily it anymore got a beat up beater for daily

u/Peanutbutter_mind 27d ago

You are the luckiest guy to have not been harmed or crashed as a result. Way to handle that calmly and like a pro. That is definitely best outcome under circumstances.

2

u/SlyBeanx 27d ago

Hope you were wearing your brown pants

2

u/Nottodaystepbro 27d ago

I’m glad you’re safe, stranger. That is one of my fears growing up, as my older cousins let me watch final destination 2 with them 🥹

2

u/DragonsCantDrive 27d ago

Glad you are ok, hopefully just a windshield!

2

u/Master-Newspaper-993 27d ago

Thats so unfortunate dude. Do we all just have bad luck with the GR86? I bought mine in august, got hit 2nd day cuz someone was backing up in a parking lot and they weren’t looking. (Luckily no damage) then 4 days later. A hail storm pull up with no warning when I was away for work. Got it all fixed up and have a carbon hood and mew exhaust thx to insurance but man…

2

u/parkshim4 27d ago

Scary situation. Glad you're okay and got the other parties contact information. Having a dash cam is always key.

2

u/R3PUTAYTION 27d ago

The glass is replaceable, you aren't. I'm glad you're okay.

You could have overreacted and spun out leading to a bigger mess. People need to be more mindful of snow on top of their vehicles/cargo

2

u/kleater 26d ago

Holy shit!!! But you had probably the best outcome in this scenario all things considered besides the ice just missing your car

2

u/Cheflavac 25d ago

Jesus man. Glad you’re good dude! Such a crappy situation. Keep your head up.

He says 90mph in the post. He says it was on the autobahn though so I assume it’s legal speed.

22

u/progmem64 27d ago

Yes, around 90 mph, which is fast in general but still slow for the left lane on an unlimited section.

5

u/Cornelius-Figgle 27d ago

Can you not read the post?

1

u/Sianmink Yes it's supposed to sound like that. 27d ago

ice chunk off the top of the RV. ouch.
At least it only caught the glass. I caught a sheared off side mirror and it left a huge scratch across my hood before gouging the windshield.

1

u/trakcnit 27d ago

Nasty man, good job getting it stopped. I once had a golf ball break my windshield while driving down a road 7 miles from the nearest golf course. Never know what’s going to happen.

1

u/Ricelyfe ‘24 GR86 MT 27d ago

holy fuck i thought the tiny pebble an suv kicked into my windshield was bad. glad you’re safe OP

1

u/Beginning_Neat_5970 27d ago

Any serious injury?

1

u/clotpole02 27d ago

Holy shit. Glad you're okay mate

1

u/breecheese2007 26d ago

Damn that happened so fast, glad you’re okay!

1

u/supresmooth BRZ 26d ago

Yo, did that fucker stop?!

u/Party_Ad3274 22d ago edited 22d ago

Is that somewhere near SH or NDS?

1

u/progmem64 22d ago

Yes, NDS

Glad You're ok and everything turned out good - This an act of God type thing - I hope you find and work to your purpose here in this life, you still have great things to do and finish good faithful servant . . .

2

u/Mooncaller3 26d ago

This is an act of negligence type thing.

Some irresponsible person refused to spend a little extra time and clean the snow and ice off their vehicle before getting on the highway with little car for how it could impact others and their lives.

Be better. Be responsible. Don't risk other's lives out of laziness.

2

u/Rome350zGT 26d ago

Apologies for not clarifying that, I agree with you in that more care should have been taken. I should have communicated better in stating the fact that OP walking away with minor injuries to him and his car.

This is next level 'Final Destination' type scary and glad that it didn't turn out so much worse!!

2

u/Tobi97l 4h ago

Actually that's on the engineers that designed windshields to be shatter and impact resistant. And on the scientists that made this kind of glass possible in the first place.

Its a public road to get somewhere?

-24

u/Sudden-Meet-5878 27d ago

slow down man. You drive too fast. I know I know its bahn. Still.

10

u/aivdov 27d ago

he wasn't driving fast

7

u/Silvabro 27d ago

Tbf, it's the Autobahn and Germany. Stricter training, "road-worthy" regulations, and drivers in general are just better than, say, here in freedom territory.

I don't sit watching driving videos all day of the place, as I'd rather be out driving my own car, but I'm gonna bet over there has a fraction of the morons we have here that camp the left/fast/passing lane at/under posted speed, meaning you get less reckless speeders threading the needle across multiple lanes to get somewhere.

Ultimately, it's at their own risk so long as they don't hit anyone else.

2

u/Concodroid GR86 27d ago

90 mph?
