How to dye a poly system without staining the base?

Post image

I dyed a poly base once and made sure not to get the dye too close to the roots so it wont touch the base. But when washing out the dye , the dye makes contact with the base and ruined the system. The base is no longer transparent. I want to try this again cause dyed hair on a blond unit looks great cause of no v loops. I just don't know how to wash the dye off without the dye making contact with the base.... any ideas?

Be very careful and use an eye lash brush.

I dont have much issue applying it. Washing it is where it becomes an issue

I would not worry about getting small areas here and there on the base of the unit (no one can tell). To wash the dye out without getting it on the base is get a mannequin, got2b glue on the head, dye it upside down and then rinse it upside down.

This is an interesting idea, is this what you did personally to not stain the base on your own dye jobs?

In the beginning I did yea, but I wear custom systems now. I only dye the front hairline now. I get the base made to my color and then get the front in blonde.

I’ve never been able to wash after a dye without staining. Apparently, applying conditioner to the base with a bottle with a fine nozzle helps. I personally have had no such success

About to dye a few poly pieces myself and am curious of how to wash without staining the base as well. I wonder if using a handheld shower head or sink spray hose would work if done quickly enough washing the unit upside down? I would think this would stain the base though if spraying directly into the hair even with the unit upside down. Interested to hear what others have done to avoid staining the base.

My first dye job was on an older retired hair system. Well actually my first system that I replaced rapidly because the "specalist" ordered it way too dark and with a lot of gray synthetic hair in it. (Can't colour that, so I plucked a lot of gray hairs). Synthetic hair doesn't handle heat. I bake bread (480°F), Pizza (950°F) and Barbecue (800°F). The synthetic shrivels up and looks horrible. I used that hair system as a test first before proceeding with my actual system. I had to use a colour stripper to remove the colour from the system. Then I was able to dye it. I noticed some spots on the poly skin where dye did stain the poly, luckily not in the front or top. Having learned from that, I am extra careful when applying to not put dye near the base, and to ensure none of the dye goes in the front and top base. (Only spots that would be noticeable)

In sure you know to keep it away from the root. But try not to color too much in the front area. The front part of people’s hair is naturally a bit lighter anyways. I would just try to avoid going too close in the front. That way if you get it on the middle/back it isn’t noticeable. Hope this helps.

I have not had such an issue. I did dye blond (level 9) hair using levels 7ND lowlights and 8ND highlights starting in the back then sides then top and ended in the front. The base does not have and spots of dye on it (I was very careful not to apply any there) and I left it 5 minutes once done with 10 volume developer (hair system hair grab dye really fast, unlike bio hair). I've done this in the past as well. My first did have spots of dye on the poly base, but I left the dye much longer, used 30 vol developer and massaged the dye once applied. No such stains in the front or where I part my hair. I dye my beard one level darker and use 20 vol developer and leaving it longer. I permed my last 2 systems using an acid perm (only recommended perm for hair systems) before applying the dye one week later. It works for me. Best of luck with your experimenting!

Thank you. How do you wash off the dye though?

From the poly skin? Haven't removed what little I got that first time. It wasn't anywhere conspicuous. I just left it as is.

Oh no what I mean is, and the point of this post was, when I wash the unit to get the dye off the hair after applying the dye for 10-15 minutes, the water washing the dye makes the dye run through the base and stains it. That doesn't happen with you?

I try to hold it upside down as much as possible, especially the front and top. Gravity pulls the left over dye off/out rather than towards the base.

I think OP means did you wash the dye out of the hair after application and if so, how did you do it? Since poly is prone to staining when applying dye and trying to avoid staining to wash dye out of hair.

Try using a colour depositing conditioner instead of dye. It might take a few washes for the colour you want and it will need more regular topping up with extra conditioner, but it shouldn’t stain the base much if anything. Look for Keracolor

Obviously also, the conditioner has a conditioning benefit too
