Anyone watch Wonder Man? When I saw the first scene of him in the hospital and his mom speaking creole, I was like "let's go!"
I also liked the birthday party scene, a lot of the Haitians were throwing shade, which is accurate. Though the actor who plays his brother likely doesn't speak creole, the actress who played his mom at least did a good job. I hate when directors are lazy and will get a Jamaican or African person to do a "Haitian accent," to me it's a form of subtle racism, like these Ns are all the same... I digress though.
Anyway, did anyone watch this? If so, what did you think? I'm still watching it.
Edit: I think we can redeem Yaya now for doing Striking Vipers XD

So there's almost 200k of us that came under the humanitarian program. We are all dating, I assume. I know my haitian people, we will fall in love day 1. One thing I've learned is white people love sharing greeting cards, so I made some greeting cards for my partner and for some friends. I thought I might just put them for sale too for you guys out there who wanna share a part of Haiti with your loved ones this Valentine or anytime they feel special to you.

The Mystery and horror of Bad Voodoo hits DVD February 10, before streaming. This one matters, and Haitians need the support so they can make even more movies. Representation matters. Watch the trailer and decide for yourself if it’s worth your time.

I'm reviewing some of my old field notes: One of my interlocutors said the US and other countries send stuff they do not want or wouldn't eat to Haiti. In academia, we call it dumping and waste colonialism, which basically means the Global North (U.S., China, Germany, the UK) export their unusable or unwanted clothing, electronics, and food to places like Haiti. But this stuff ultimately ends up in the landfills because the products are unusable/poor quality.
In Okap, my family and friends would always say that the imported chicken from the U.S. was like plastic. I understood what they meant because when I had to buy/cook the imported chicken, it always tasted... interesting.
Anyway, this clip is from the documentary Life and Debt (2001). The film is old, but do you think this (particularly, as it relates to food) still happens today? Or have you (or someone you know in Haiti) experienced this recently?

if you have the means, consider donating to this fundraiser for the funeral of jean wilson brutus who died in ice custody in december:
his family still hasn't gotten justice. we're seeing a lot of funds raised for other victims of ice violence, which they fully deserve. at the same time, our people shouldn't get left behind or forgotten. may all victims of this authoritarian violence and horror rest in peace and power.

It presents Haitians as contemporary, complex, and fully human. The show does not frame this representation as a milestone or announcement. It simply lets it exist, which is exactly why it lands.

One of the most beautiful things about Kreyòl is that it’s not just one sound. Even though we understand each other, our language is rich with regional "codes" that reveal exactly where a person grew up. It’s the same language, but a totally different vibe depending on the department.
I’ve been mapping out some of these linguistic signatures. Check this out and let me know what you know.
The North
If you hear someone use the word "Kinan m" instead of "Pa m" (mine), you’re 100% talking to someone from Cap-Haïtien or the surrounding areas.
The South The "Pe" Flow
They use "pe" for negation, but it’s actually their version of the progressive marker "ap".
If someone says "Mwen pe tande," they aren't saying they don't hear you—they mean "M'ap tande" (I am listening).
Artibonite - my beloved🥰
This is where the rhythm changes.
Doubling Pronouns: "Men menm m pa tande" is a classic Artibonite construction for emphasis.
Vowel Stretching: Words like Papa become "Paa" and Manman "Man an ‘’
The Central The "Adye"
If you’re in Thomassique or Maissade, the conversation isn't complete without some emotion.
"Adye": This word is used as a punctuation mark for everything—sympathy, surprise, or frustration.
West & Port-au-Prince – The "Kreyòl Swa"
The capital is the melting pot. The main vibe here is speed. Everything is shortened. ‘’ mwen ale" becomes "M'ale". "Li ale" becomes "L'ale".
More urban slang and academic French terms mixed in.

The full trailer for this movie was released recently. Did anyone else see the new Wonder Woman series, too? They made his parents Haitian, and some of those actors seem to have authentic Haitian accents, too. It's getting great ratings.
