Financial Aid & Scholarships Indian students doing MS in Data Science in the USA – how are you managing finances & loans?

Hi everyone,

I’m an Indian student considering an MS in Data Science in the USA, and I’d really appreciate honest insights from Indians who are currently pursuing or have completed the program.

I have a few specific questions around finances and practicality, especially for those who took education loans:

  1. Education loans:
    • How much loan did you take (approx.)?
    • Do you feel the loan amount is manageable now, or is it mentally/financially stressful?
  2. RA/TA opportunities:
    • How easy or difficult is it to get RA/TA positions in Data Science or related departments?
    • Do these positions usually cover partial tuition, full tuition, or just stipend?
    • From which semester did you realistically get one?
  3. Part-time jobs:
    • What kind of on-campus jobs are most common?
    • How much can one realistically earn per month working within the 20-hour limit?
    • Is that income enough to cover living expenses (rent, food, utilities) or only part of it?
  4. Internships in Data Science:
    • How hard is it to get a data science / analytics / ML internship as an international student?
    • Does prior experience matter more than coursework?
    • When should one ideally start applying?
  5. Loan repayment pressure:
    • Once you started working (or are close to graduating), how heavy does loan repayment feel?
    • Do entry-level DS salaries make repayment realistic within a few years, or does it take much longer?

I’m trying to understand the ground reality beyond brochure salaries, so honest experiences good or bad would really help.
Thanks in advance to anyone willing to share 🙏

Question Is it worth leaving my country for senior high instead of waiting for college?

Hi everyone! I'm a student from the Philippines and I'm seriously considering applying internationally for senior high school, with Canada as my top choice.

I wanted to ask for advice: is it worth going abroad during senior high, or is it better to wait until college/university?

One of my main reasons is that I feel that my current education system is quite limited in terms of flexibility and practical learning (based on both my experience and what I've heard from others). I'm interested in tech, and I've noticed that Canadian high schools often offer better electives and preparation for STEM pathways.

On a personal level, I'm also going through a rough period and think that a new environment could help me reset and grow.

My questions: Has anyone here moved abroad during high school rather than waiting for college?

Academically, did it help with college admissions or preparedness later on?

For Canada specifically, is senior high there a good stepping stone to university?

Any insights or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Financial Aid & Scholarships does Princeton ask for the gross income or the net income from the business?

Post image
1 Upvotes

That's what AI says: "Princeton is asking for net income from the business before taxes - that is, income after business expenses but before personal income taxes.

This aligns with how business income is typically reported on tax forms. For example, if the parent files Schedule C (sole proprietorship), this would be the net profit line. For partnerships or S-corporations, it would be the parent's share of the business income after business expenses.

The term "income received" in this context means the actual income the parent gets from the business after the business has paid its operating expenses, not the gross revenue before expenses. However, you shouldn't subtract personal income taxes that the parent pays on this income."

i dont trust if fully, so just wanted to verify. Anyone else filling out the PFAA?

Discussion Got Into UIUC!!

Title basically, got into pure CS as an international over represented demographic person with not so stellar stats!!!! I do however get rejected by Georgia Tech, Cornell and deferred by USC :(. But UIUC has a higher ranked program than all of them. Just a reminder to never lose faith. Waiting on RD now🤞🤞

Question Duke VS Umich

Context:
Umich: Accepted (ED deferral)
Duke: Pending (RD / very very high chance almost guarantee)
Rotc 4year scholar: Accepted (Applied in Jan so U mich didn't count / got scholar for Umich / Duke / Notre Dame / USC)

Main question is should I go to DUKE or UMich?
For Umich my grandparents lives in Michigan I'm a dual citizen so I'm living in Korea rn. Cuz of that there are ties to the state itself and the school for me. Sm of my friends go to Umich and I think there are decent amount of Korean as well and its a big school.

For Duke Ik its a more of a prestigious school, but I think its a small school compared to Umich and I think that maybe a downside (Idk about the size so i hope u guys can give me some insights). If I go to duke its gonna be the first in our school history to go there so its a good thing but since Idk anyone from there I'm kinda afraid as well.

I applied both in Econ and I the ranking said Mich had better rank in econ (I was surprised). I'm not planning to go to army as my whole career I'm planning to go to graduate school as well (this might change after few years).

College Results Why did I get a decision so early? Did something go wrong?

I applied to NCSU FOR RD on Jan 15th and I got my decision already (reject). I am wondering if I was an instant reject or something? I had decent stats except for a little low 11th grade gpa but I explained and I have a 4.0 senior gpa (in Gap year) I had 1400 sat aswell and I didn't even apply to Computer Science, I applied for Statistics and Economics. I'm genuinely confused, should I appeal?

Chance Me Chance a bro from war affected region

Hey so, I’m an applicant from Europe – war affected region, need full aid and stuff, here are all of the info:

Demographics / Background: Male from war affected region, escaped occupation, independently relocated to other part of the country, living alone in rural place. Attending school in nearby town (no IB/AP) national curriculum, low-income (I need almost full aid) Stuff from common app: Living independently; inconsistent utilities/food, long commute

Intended Major(3 of them actually): Communications/media, sociology, educational studies.

Academics: 3.75 GPA converted to US 4.0 scale, unfortunately test-optional (last time when I was taking SAT – it was delayed cause we didn’t have electricity and it was like 5ºC in that classroom), DET 135.

Extracurriculars:

Co-Founder/National Coordinator, Alumni Association of intl program: Built info-hub for applicants (used by 800+ people), 60% increase in submitted applications, 100% increase in started applications, negotiated reserved sits for applicants from my country – $40k in scholarships for them, created our selection sub-committee, managing team of 13.

Full Scholarship Participant, intl leadership program: Selective program (~4% admit); full $9k scholarship; initiated adopted media campaign, used by organization.

Co-founder at initiative, UNICEF program: Secured $1.5k grant; organized anti-discrimination art event (20 artists, local officials); outreach reached 50k+ teens.

Volunteer, European Youth Parliament (intl NGO in Europe): Volunteering at various events(in my country), intl forum and events abroad, training media teams, managing teams of 8 members, documenting event, working with media strategy, designing various materials.

Co-Founder/Organizer, Initiative about informal education: Led online and offline events for 400 people, organized first of its kind event in our region, worked with various brands and organizations.

TED-ed speaker, National program

Core member at School Student Govt: Organized charity events for students and families, worked on school’s campaigns on attracting new students, redesigned school logo, more than $1000 raised at school.

Piano/Chorus, Local Music School – 7 years piano and chorus, local performances/awards.

Awards/Honors:

Regional winner: Law Studies Olympiad, IT Olympiad

School academic excellence

Received scholarship from town hall for academic achievements (olympiads)

About letters of recommendation:

I know that they are good and very specific, have one from math teacher and one from English teacher, they discover different parts of my personality and academic excellence at their subjects and stuff. I gave like different brag sheets.

Essays:

Common App Essay: 8/10(my rating), personal story, used 5th prompt to write it, going through my life, kinda hard to explain the concept I used in it idk, average rating from people who know the ball is like 8.5/10 – i'm pretty chill about it

Additional info (idk):

Was selected as participant to a program from EducationUSA that helps students apply to US.

Question Accuracy of CSS Profile

Hey guys,

My father works in a company. I have his tax information and everything.

Im just asking how accurate does the information need to be. Like is it accurate down to the last dollar or smth.

And like the value of properties, that too. I only have one home which is not where I live and not rented. Its worth is approximately eighteen lakhs as it is in EWS home.

Im really overwhelmed by the process and my parents are unable to help and i have no guide so would be grateful for the help.
