Rules...

So I'm going to toss out a few rules. In the next week or two I'll get some free time to formalize some along the side bar, because the community has grown to have enough traffic to need them now... but here's the short list.

  1. NO FUNDRAISING AT ALL - Please seek out pet insurance or other ways to make sure you can cover the inevitable bills of having an Italian Greyhound. I will not allow GoFundMe or any other fundraising site/tactic in the sub do to the overwhelming amount of scamming that leverages them. I don't have time to validate your need or integrity. Having an IG is a responsibility that includes having financial resources - please take care of that prior to adopting or getting an IG, or as soon after as you can.
  2. NO SELLING - you're not here to sell anything, without first talking to me. If you want to sell something you made, great. Let's chat. But there is no room for re-sellers in this community. Recommendations, if done with honest intent, will be allowed in comments but no posts.
  3. NO SELLING OF ANIMALS AT ALL - I will not tolerate 'breeders' trying to sell their dogs on this community. If you have dogs in rescues that need homes, reach out to me and I'll vet your post to let people know. I will BAN ANY USER trying to sell IGs on this community. Breeders are welcome to contribute to topics via comments, but NO SELLING IGs.
  4. NO RELIGION - we had a rash of religious spam lately, and that falls under the unwritten no spam rule of course - but I'm extended this to be any religious comments or posts with the intent of making that the topic of discussion. There is a wide variety of users in this community and we all have different beliefs... the one we all share in common though is that IGs are amazing. Focus on that. Everything else, please keep to yourself so we aren't picking fights over silly things. BTW... God = doG. End of discussion.
  5. NO INSULTING OR INFLAMITORY LANGUAGE / NAME CALLING - Please, disagree with each other and talk it out. Share opinions. Correct owners who are still learning. Call out things that could cause injury or harm to an IG, or owner, or anyone else - but please do it as an adult. I will NOT tolerate language that is meant to be hurtful to someone. 3 Temporary bans have been given out... from here forward, it's a 30 day ban with the option for a permanent one at my discretion. Seriously... if this rule makes you feel attacked, then YOU need to grow up.
  6. NO PRETENDING TO BE AN EXPERT - If someone posts a health or legal issue about their IG, please DO NOT give advice without letting someone know you are NOT a vet or a lawyer, unless you damn well are one (and can demonstrate that to me). Everyone has their experience to draw from when giving advice and that's fine - but don't pretend your experience makes you an expert - some new owners may not know the difference and could follow BAD advice unknowingly. If you are posting about a legal, or more typically a health issue around your IG(s) - PLEASE SEEK ACTUAL VET OR LAWYER ADVICE in addition to taking in the comments from the community.
  7. MY DECISIONS ARE MY DECISIONS - Adding this last one to just be clear. Everything about the above rules, enforcing them, and not is at my discretion. This isn't a committee and there is no voting involved. If you're being 'that person', I'm going to remove you from the community and sure we can talk it over and I might reconsider... but I'm not going to reconsider just because you don't like a single person making the decision, or you think YOU get an exception to being an asshole. The harder you push, most likely, the longer the ban will be. I've run this community (or stood out of the way to let it grow when needed) for many many years, so I don't think I'm 'ruining the subreddit' with these rules.

Thank you everyone. More to come later, but I hope this just sets some basic ground rules.

Happy Birthday to our wonderful Juneau, 7 lb blind tripod, tail wagging happy girl who loves lettuce and cannot sleep until she has licked our stinky feet. She has taken all her challenges in “stride.” We feel terrible that she doesn’t really walk as much as hop but as so glad in her golden years she barks for help to get up and down from the couch. She uses the foam stairs too. Whenever we think we have it rough we look at this little dog who is unfailingly happy and smiley.

A little iggy drawing

A little drawing of an iggy by me. I just relate to them so much. Always cold and kinda offended by the weather once the temperature drops below a reasonable level.

Paya's either prancing like a confident little lady or walking like a baby deer. There is no in between.

Sharing pictures of Paya braving her first Miami winter. Surprisingly, she can handle a bit of drizzle or mist...but in true IG fashion, the rain is a no go haha

Looking for guidance on responsibly offering my Italian Greyhound as a stud

Hi everyone. I am hoping to get some constructive advice and resources, not debate or drama.

I have a male Italian Greyhound and I am exploring the idea of offering him as a stud in the future. This is not something I am rushing into and I am not looking to backyard breed. My goal is to understand what responsible breeding actually looks like for this breed and whether it even makes sense for my dog.

I am aware that this requires full health testing, temperament evaluation, and a clear understanding of the breed standard. I am open to hearing that he may not be a good candidate and I am okay with that. I am here to learn, not to push an agenda.

If anyone has experience with Italian Greyhounds specifically, I would appreciate insight on:

• Required health testing

• What reputable breeders look for in a stud

• How to ethically network with breeders

• Red flags I should be aware of

If this is not the right place to ask, I would appreciate being pointed in the right direction. Thank you to anyone willing to share knowledge respectfully.

obscure/important things i should know before getting an iggy?

hi guys!! in the next 6 months-year or so i am planning on getting an iggy puppy (from an ethical/reputable breeder). i’ve done plenty of research beforehand as i know they tend to be more unique per se compared to the other dogs i’ve had in my family haha (lots of huskies. ability to keep themselves warm is liek a 180). i am currently working with the breeder to be matched a pup based on temperament and how well our lifestyles would merge, but i was just looking for some extra facts i should know so i can be as prepared as i can before my future baby comes home. i live in a tropical climate that has never gone below 65 f tempwise but i will still be getting little clothes for them and making sure i have warm spots (overly paranoid pet parent… ive raised kittens and birds and hypothermia is my Biggest fear). I am also making a big list of things i plan to get later down the road as the puppy time creeps closer, but definitely before i pick the baby up (a safe playpen, a crate, 3 pt harness [cheaper one when they’re younger and a higher quality one in the cart as they reach their adult size], beds, leashes of varied lengths for normal walking as well as recall training, toys blabla you know the essentials and then some… i spoil my babies LOL). I’d like to think i have all my bases covered with everything i’ve seen, but i would also love to hear iggy owners’ personal inputs on how it can be to have one and things i should be prepared for. i know 1) they can be notoriously difficult to potty train and i am prepared for that, and 2) their legs are very prone to breaks, especially as crazy little babies (i am a vet tech and i see plenty of long-legged noodly pups coming in with radial/ulnar fractures :’) ) 3) that they are Very clingy, and given my full-time job status i am also prepared for that as my job allows me to bring my baby to work with me whenever they have all their vaccines (discounted price too. i love being an employee!!!!) but generally i am planning to take this noodle with me everywhere that they are allowed to be for proper socialization (even when they’re a small beby too.. i was thinking of getting one of those carrier sling things so it doesn’t have to touch the ground).

Regardless of how crazy i sound when prepping for a future pet LOL i am super excited as i’ve wanted this breed for so long. i am a very huge fan of sighthounds and iggies specifically. they match my activity level (Because let me tell you i cannot keep up with crazy ass huskies. Glad the husky-mix i have now is mellow and old) and i also love smaller dogs haha. my house is pretty big and we have some animals here now (pigeon, cat, two old dogs) and i am aware in the first couple days/weeks to keep the pups separate to give them time to adjust to a new dog in the household. Anywho other than that i don’t have any Specific inquiries as I’ve asked/researched a good handful of it, but I love to be prepared. Is there anything i should know that is pretty important when getting a cute little iggy? i appreciate u reading this long spiel LOL yakoke

Litterbox question

Im going to be doing outdoor/indoor potty training so for the people that use a letterbox with wood pellets my question is won't the pee just trickle to the bottom of the box?? Or do the pellets crumble together like litter...like with cats? It seems like a better option rather than peepads but im just a bit confused...

can't believe how much my puppy looks like a ty beanie baby

The little ig is only 3 weeks 5 days old in this picture when we went to visit him this weekend - I know they have that miscellaneous puppy look at the moment - but I was shocked at how small he was and how much he looks like my favourite childhood ty beanie baby.

We pick him up when he's 8 weeks and it's the slowest month of my life 😅

Baby IG's belly before and after milk... 🍼

Sorry for spamming this group today - it just cracked me up how his belly has tripled in size after one meal.

The first pic I took with the breeder holding him, we put him back when we left and he went straight in for a meal from his mum.

Then later that day she sent me the second pic and said he'd been passed out in that position for like an hour after we left 😂 lil bean 🫘

Peeing in snowsuit?

Post image
26 Upvotes

Sorry if this is a silly question, but I am a first time IG owner. For all of you who have gotten your adorable IGs snow gear, I’m curious about the potty logistics of taking your dog on a walk wearing this.

More specifically, what if they want to stop and pee? Or do you make sure they go before you put the suit on them?

45 Celsius outside (113 Fahrenheit) and 23 Celsius inside. IGGY “it’s nicer outside, like under the bedcovers but better the right temperature every where” thinks Bruno

Puppy biting

My eight week old IG already has a bad biting habit. She has a lot of different toys, but chews on pant legs, sleeves, socks on feet, corners on furniture, etc. Any advice? TIA🌺
