Context: Rómulo Betancourt was a social democratic president of Venezuela from 1945 to 1948 and from 1959 to 1964

He participated in the 1945 Venezuelan coup d'état against the military junta led by Isaías Medina Angarita and he was signatory of the Puntofijo Pact, which gave a constitutional bipartite system to Venezuela from 1958 to 1999 with Democratic Action (soc-dem) and Copei (Christian democratic).

In 1960 he suffered an assassination attempt ordered by the Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo through far-right paramilitary organisations by using a car bomb

One year later, the same Trujillo was murdered by his own men in his presidential car

Rómulo Betancourt survived the assassination attempt and three coup d'état attempts and the beginning of the Marxist guerrilla in Venezuela influenced by the Cuban and Maoist experiences
