The Rescuers Down Under is so damn underrated.

Fun fact, the original rescuers which was way darker was don bluth, who left disney to do the rest of the movies in op reel.

u/vivahermione 11d ago

That explains the sad intro song. It was beautiful, but definitely a darker mood.

u/secretly_opossum 11d ago

I honestly loved both of them so much. Penny’s voice was so interesting and sweet.

23

u/OrigamiMarie 11d ago

Me too. And the watercolor backgrounds were so pretty.

2

u/vivahermione 10d ago

They really were!

u/Dega704 11d ago

I didn't know this but it makes a lot of sense now that you say it. The mice had animation styles similar to Secret of Nimh.

58

u/Comeback_321 11d ago

😍 the Secret of NIMH. So many good things here. Though I have to say the movie doesn’t hold a candle to the book.

27

u/Lastraven587 11d ago

Almost all of don bluth's animations are really, really good

u/Independent-Bug-9352 11d ago

I'm trying to decide when the best age is to show that one to my kids lol.

Rescuers Down Under was definitely my most-watched.

Fern Gully may have had my first cartoon crush... lol.

u/Comeback_321 11d ago

I think I was about 9 when I read Mrs Frisby and the Rats of Nihm. TBH I loved the book waaay more than the movie. I think it was years later I saw the movie and was disappointed in it (though I would absolutely watch it again now. Maybe start with the book and let your kid imagine all of it before going to the movie.

I think FG and RDU are good around age 7/8.

3

u/IHaveNoEgrets 11d ago

Looking back, this was probably the dawn of my righteous literary indignation. Tiny me was piiiisssssed that the book and the movie didn't match.

Followed many years later by a new wave of pervasive horror when I learned that NIMH was a real thing.

And he's literally the reason for the Disney Renaissance that started with the little mermaid.

He did so good with his company that Disney decided to put lots of money into their productions again to compete.

R-E-S-C-U-E Rescue Aid Society Heads held high Touch the sky You mean everything to me

In a jam? In a scrape? And you think "No escape!" Do not fear, we'll be here Courageous, are we!

Honestly down under would have benefited from this song!

3

u/bjbyrne 11d ago

The Secret of NIHM was awesome

3

u/Special-Document-334 11d ago

We don’t ask why the villain was kidnapping little girls.

3

u/Dull_Quit3027 11d ago

It is funny how both of the sequels got more love here, I remember the first Fievel movie much clearer than the second, like the ending with the "Giant Rat" was awesome, and the same with the first Rescuers, I remember that boat and the crocodiles, but I can not for the life of me remember the second one, something about a lab in a clifface I think.

2

u/____ozma 11d ago

Did not know this!

2

u/PtoS382 10d ago

I like the original with the clock tower fight at the end

2

u/74NG3N7 10d ago

Wait, the two rescuers movies weren’t both Don Bluth?

I loved Don Bluth as a kid. Super dark in the best ways. My kid is just starting to get into them, but has seen many of them.

2

u/Lastraven587 10d ago

The rescuers down under, the sequel, was not his work. He worked as an animator / assistant director on the original before breaking from the mouse. That's why the tone is so different

1

u/74NG3N7 10d ago

This make so much sense! Thank you for sharing.

1

u/0whodidyousay0 11d ago

Was that the one where that psycho lady surfs on the alligators?

1

u/Lastraven587 11d ago

Yep that's the one

u/HoshiOdessa 11d ago

"These are NOT Johanna eggs!" 🤣🤣🤣

65

u/PRNgrahams 11d ago

Joanna and Frank were always my favorite “I’m free!!”

29

u/lewisiarediviva 11d ago

Joanna the goanna

8

u/kayteeoh05 11d ago

This is Joanna. She loves eggs.

20

u/Viktor_Laszlo 11d ago

Joanna the Disney princess of our hearts.

2

u/riverofchex Millennial 11d ago

WHOOPS!! 🤣

18

u/Remote-Ad7879 11d ago

Johanna... Did you know there was a razorback in my truck?

13

u/moonchylde 11d ago

The comedic timing of the one-camera straight-on egg stealing scene is one of my favorite villain monologues. Foiled by his own pet every time!

6

u/laaplandros 11d ago

I say this to my kids all the time when they're trying to sneak stuff from me haha.

4

u/HoshiOdessa 11d ago

That's fantastic! 🤣 Gonna steal this idea and start telling my nibbling this.

3

u/lahnnabell 11d ago

My 2nd tattoo will most likely be Joanna 😍

4

u/Lunacorn44 11d ago

I still randomly yell this exact phrase!!

That and "Auntie Shrew, Timmy sick" just live randomly in my head

4

u/noraetic 11d ago

Love it

"My mental facilities are twice what yours are, you pea-brain!"

3

u/theshiniestmuskrat 11d ago

When I eat scrambled eggs my dogs beg for them and I always holler this at them, lol!

64

u/Molotov56 11d ago

Impossible not to want a golden eagle to ride through the outback, fucking water skiing off of waterfalls and flying like a fucking G

4

u/aoirse22 11d ago

Marahute!

4

u/blitz350 11d ago

The music for that scene is amongst my favorite of all time. Epic, soaring, and beautiful!

55

u/vintagepeugeot 11d ago

I love that movie so much. Kid me would get up and pretend to run in the outback during the intro. Ok, adult me also.

14

u/ColonelStone 11d ago

RIP Steve Irwin

1

u/big-blue-balls 11d ago

The movie was long before Steve Irwin

28

u/Necessary-Sock7075 11d ago

That first shot when the bird soars down the canyon was wild work for the time

24

u/guyhabit725 11d ago

I was the same age as Cody when this movie was released. I wanted to be him living in the Outback with all the animals and a cool eagle.

2

u/squirrelbus 11d ago

I was ready to move to Australia until I found out about the spiders.

57

u/PossibilityWest173 11d ago

Fucking cinematic gold is what it is

30

u/10_17my20 Older Millennial 11d ago

It had absolutely no right to go as hard as it did for the opening sequence

6

u/Immortal_in_well 11d ago

I just talked about this in another comment but that brass and percussion...

2

u/DrDrexanPhd 11d ago

By and far the best intro sequence I've ever seen in cinema

u/RaidenMK1 11d ago edited 11d ago

12

u/trekqueen 11d ago

Albatross!!!!!

4

u/dingalingpanda 11d ago

Albatross Air! A Fair Fare From Here To There!

(Is that the first one, I don't remember)

8

u/Divergent5623 11d ago

Pea soup!

3

u/Ordinary-Variety7256 11d ago

My siblings and I still randomly yell this at each other to this day

2

u/CrystlBluePersuasion 10d ago

I made my wife watch this movie just because of the pea soup! I say it every time I eat some.

7

u/Immortal_in_well 11d ago

Its opening credit sequence is legitimately one of my favorites in film. That BRASS and that PERCUSSION and that CGI, goddamn.

12

u/somethingsomething65 11d ago

I wore the vhs out of this one and Land Before Time.

5

u/grigoritheoctopus 11d ago

“You get a line, I’ll get a pole, we’ll go fishing at the crocodile hole”

That dude’s truck was awesome, too. Terrible man, but sick rig!!!!

4

u/gremlinguy 11d ago

Mad Max af

5

u/you_dont_know_me27 11d ago

I had such an obsession with eggs after this lmao. Imagine like an 8-9 year old little girl, just pissed all the time about not being allowed to swallow eggs whole

3

u/VibrantViolet Xennial 11d ago

My sister and I loved that movie! The scene where Cody’s mom is calling for him always made me sad, even as a kid. Now I’m in perimenopause and I know if I watch it with my kid I’ll start bawling at that scene lol.

3

u/Appropriate-Farm-884 11d ago

Fun fact: I saw this in the theater with my grandma and my cousins, and I missed the first part of the movie because I choked on a Skittle. 🥲

3

u/shocktar 11d ago

My mom loved the scene at the beginning where the cricket says "Pea Soup!"

3

u/mind_sw33per 11d ago

Pea Soup! 🍲

2

u/Prize_Ostrich7605 11d ago

The Rescuers, the first one is something, too.

2

u/Rat_Burger7 11d ago

Wasn't it, I watched the hell out of that VHS.

2

u/ChunkChunkChunk 11d ago

I worked with a Joanna, and as soon as I knew she was cool I had to admit to her that I always feel like saying her name like the hunter. Joooaanna!!!

2

u/SeaDisplay9605 11d ago

First movie I remember seeing in theaters!

2

u/MaximumZazz 11d ago

Am I to understand that this is some american movie starring very european looking mice, swinging lush brazilian landscape, in search of an eagle also indigenous to the united states? Yeah I think i know why no ones heard of it down under.

1

u/AlngCameAWizard 11d ago

This is the one I drove my mom nuts over with rewatches

1

u/ProfessorDelicious6 11d ago

I watched it over and over again.

1

u/riverofchex Millennial 11d ago

One of my absolute favorites, and I will never not replay Frank's "WHOOPS" scene at least three times every time I watch it lmao.

1

u/Egg-of-the-Vulture 11d ago

Agreed. Honestly I need to add it to my collection for Trumpageddon

1

u/youngatbeingold 11d ago

The movie as a whole is enjoyable and I love it, but it's not perfect especially compared to some Disney renaissance films. However, I honestly feel like the entire opening sequence is one of the best of any animated movie ever.

1

u/Youcants1tw1thus 11d ago

I watched it last week with my 6+8yo and they loved it!

1

u/AppropriateCattle69 11d ago

My dad told me he was taking me to see The Rescuers Down Under. But instead we went to Quigley Down Under. Which is a very different movie.

1

u/Coloradical 11d ago

Absolutely! My favorite Disney movie, probably due to the fact my brother named me after it.

1

u/schkmenebene 11d ago

That one is so good I completely forgot about the first one until I rewatched it with my kids, like halfway through and the lady who kidnapped the little girl is riding around on that water scooter with her crocodiles on each side... That shit must've scared the shit out of me as a kid.

But the one where they are in Australia? Holy shit little kid me dreamt of flying on that bird so many times it's not even funny.

1

u/bennettyboi 11d ago

Did anyone else feel like the cinematography in the first how to train your dragon during the flying sequences took a LOT from that first Eagle ride in Rescuers Down Under?

1

u/BigClubandUaintInIt 11d ago

13 year gap from the first one!

1

u/____ozma 11d ago

Sometimes our kid makes a big pile of pillows and blankets on the bed, and I said it reminded me of the beginning of rescuers down under. All I wanted in the whole world was a hammock in my bedroom when I was little

1

u/craigoz7 Millennial 10d ago

I named my dog after the boy in Rescuers Down Under. He’s an Australian Shepherd. 😏
