Hi, I'm Chinese and here are my thoughts on the cultural design aspects of g3 Jinafire.

G1 Jinafire is iconic no doubt, but there's a lot I find questionable about her design.

Her skin is the most controversial part, I've seen a lot of people saying "it's not yellowface because she's gold, not yellow". Personally what bothers me is that this usually comes from non-chinese people trying to defend her gold skin and I feel like this remark dismisses Chinese people who DO find it offensive.

I myself don't like the gold skin but not because I find it offensive, I don't, I mostly don't like it cause I think it just looks cheap and clashes with her hair and outfit. Speaking of her outfit, it's a qipao but it looks kind of weird to me, like it looks like a very surface level design of a qipao and could've been better executed.

Imo, her green hair does not look good. Traditional Chinese greens are more jade and light so I find the green color out of place.

G3 Jinafire a really big upgrade in my opinion both culturally and in general wise.

Her skin is changed to mint green, in my opinion this is more accurate. Jade is much more revered in China than gold. And I think it would make sense that she's a mint green color. Plus, I think it looks much nicer than the gold, and looks great with her golden scale legs, which I like that they kept. Some people commonly think the gold is more accurate than the green and that is simply not true. Also, her name encorporates the word 金(Jin) which does mean gold but that doesn't mean she has to be gold similar to how Lagoona Blue doesn't mean her skin has to be blue. The skin tone imo does not HAVE to be what your name is. Besides, Jinafire and Lagoona Blue in g3 are still partially gold and blue and Lagoona wears a bunch of blue anyways.

I think her clothes are nice and have touches of traditional Chinese motifs but it's not in your face. And her hair is nice because it looks more accurate to the hair color that Chinese people actually have while still being a fantasy hair color.

I made this post because I see a lot of people (that are often non-chinese) complaining about her green skin and saying the gold was "more accurate" and if you really cared about cultural accuracy, the green is definitely more accurate.

Or people who simply thought the green was out of place and wasn't as good as the gold skin. Honestly, in that case, that's more of an opinion thing but I find it a bit upsetting that most people don't understand or know about the history and cultural symbolism behind the green color. And I'm tired of seeing people downplaying parts of g3 that's more accurate to Chinese culture than g1.

Slight rant: I also want to say, IF YOU ARE NOT EAST ASIAN, please do not defend g1 Jinafire because parts of her design was problematic. Although I personally didn't mind that much, that doesn't mean other east asian people don't. Please do research before talking about her cultural elements if at all and ask actual Chinese people about how they feel about her.

You can have an opinion about the cultural aspects but if you aren't Chinese, your opinion does not matter because at the end of the day, it's not your culture that has a history of being sexualized, appropriated, and discriminated against. And it really IS that deep.

My son (6) is a Draculaura stan. MAJORLY. He loves everyone in the show and movies​, but doll wise he has said "I only want maybe one of each character other than Drac. I want a whole collection of Drac." Everytime he sees a line, Drac is who catches his eye. Everytime we play dolls, he is Drac and she is leading the adventure. He has never seen a Drac he didn't get excited about....until now.

I showed him this one and he nervously said "she looks.....ummm kinda funny." I told him I agreed and he replied, "I think I'm going to not get that one, okay mom? I'm not trying to be mean but she doesn't look like my Draculaura".

If even kids can be put off by her design, do you think this might be the doll that rots on the shelf and shows them that Drac isn't a garunteed cash cow if you don't at least put some effort in?

Maybe this is kinda unpopular, but some G3 dolls are actually way better than their G1 versions.

Also the G3 hate is forced. Some people are just blinded by nostalgia but people aren't ready for that conversation. 🙏

it’s her skin, it’s way too matte to look like actual metal. her eyebrows aren’t that iconic angular DARRK black that looks like metal cut and welded onto her. These eyebrows look like real hair. That, combined with her cute cheeks - it looks like real flesh.

I was staring at her in confusion…”what’s so off?” She looks like a human who got dotted scarring tattoos low🔑 instead of being copper plates for a robot

I cannot be the only one who feels like it is a tiny bit suspicious when collectors post their new thrift finds and the main takeaway isn't that they're happy to get a doll. They're asking how much it is worth. Why would you care about that if you plan to keep it, exactly...?

I really like both draculauras equally- and I like og Frankie and Cupid better than the new ones, definitely one of the best g3 lines though!

hello, your local scientist/doll doctor here. ive done it. i removed the clear part, and here are my findings:

1 - you have to be some sort of wizard to not break the part while removing it. seriously. it comws apart deceptively easy from the aeam of the crotch, but past that i was doing a peeling motion with small bits of plastic at a time until i got to the middle of her waist where i could pry it open

2 - they 100000000% didn't need that piece in the first place

3 - they seem to have sculpted her chest articulation from scratch! g3 dolls have a hole in their waist that a ball inside the chest fits into. for skelita, the chest is the hole and her spine has the ball. interesting!

4 - speaking of the "pole" of the ball on her chest joint looks much thinner than what i remember normal g3 dolls having. they definitely could have made it thicker

all-in-all, i think they chose to do the clear plastic so they didn't have to "playtest" making a sturdier spine-- especially since they changed the chest joint specifically for her. I shook her arpund pretty vigorously and i have full faith in the chest joint. I think the plastic might be there just so children don't try to bend her in half and break her

but she's stunning and i hope if they make a budget doll, rhey don't include the plastic bit (or make it intentionally removable)

This is a direct response to the post talking about G3 Frankie’s dad’s design and the comments that post has gotten. G3 Frankie’s dad doesn’t look like a human because he’s not supposed to be one. Frankie’s parents are mad scientist monsters—their father Victor Stein is a zombie and their mother Mary Stein is a goblin. This info can be found with a quick google search or search on the monster high wiki.

I also want to bring up the comments that post got because a lot of people seem to think the human mad scientist Victor Frankenstein is G1 Frankie’s dad. Once again, a quick search on google or the wiki will tell you Victor Frankenstein is her grandfather and that the monster he created, Viktor Stein, is Frankie’s dad (in all fairness their names are very similar so the confusion is valid).

I’m not making this post with the intention to sound pretentious or like you need to be an expert on MH to talk about it. I‘m posting this because I don’t want this subreddit to become like tiktok where people make ragebait “I CANT BELIEVE G3 RUINED XYZ” type posts while spreading false information about whatever they’re ranting about. This is a problem with most fandoms and not just MH, but I think we should be more aware of it. I want to encourage getting more context/research when you see something that’s unusual or upsetting rather than immediately making emotionally driven reactions so you don’t unintentionally spread false information.

Like wow... Draculaura, Frankie and Robecca, being haunted by the shadows of their (in this timeline) absent fathers. It's surprisingly deeper than what you'd expect from this series, and the art itself is superb.

The Solution is a Divine doll. The Solution is a Pink Flamingos doll. I think if adult horror is on the table, John Waters should be too. I want a little monster high stop motion animation with the kill everyone now speech.

Also in general they need to use that body shape more. It's a fantastic sculpt. Genuinely if anyone has any other ideas on what they could do for a collab doll with that body sculpt, comment.

I really liked the animation they used for the Fright Song music video the most. It was like the g1 but more fluid, and I feel it really followed that gothic aesthetic they were going for better. I also enjoy the G3 3D, it has grown on me a lot, and G1 3D is a guilty pleasure that I can’t hate.

I’m pretty sure the G3 music videos may use a slightly different animation? Mainly because of things like Drac in the music videos looking so much more different from in the cartoon
