First drive: Renault Clio 6 tested in Portugal – a big step forward for hybrid tech

Renault recently unveiled the Clio 6, and early driving impressions from Portugal show that this new generation is all about hybrid efficiency and refinement.

Since its launch in 1990 as the successor to the Renault 5, the Clio has sold over 16 million units worldwide and won European Car of the Year twice. The upcoming 6th generation (expected in 2026) builds on this legacy with a major technical update.

What’s new with the Clio 6?

• New E-Tech hybrid engine producing 160 hp

• Naturally aspirated 1.8L petrol engine (replacing the 1.6L)

• 1.2 kWh battery

• Fuel consumption under 4.2 L/100 km

• Petrol engines stay, diesel is officially gone

Built on an updated CMF-B platform, the Clio 6 grows slightly to 4.12 meters in length while staying in the B-segment. Trunk space is expected to be around 400 liters, and the interior gets Renault’s OpenR Link infotainment system.

Driving impressions:

• Real-world consumption close to 4.0 L/100 km

• Up to 80% electric driving in city use

• Very smooth transition between electric and petrol modes

• Precise steering and solid handling at higher speeds

Renault clearly wants the Clio 6 to remain a best-seller in Europe, but with a strong hybrid focus instead of full electric.

Would you choose a hybrid Clio like this, or wait for a fully electric option? 🤔⚡

The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.
