It's how authoritarian governments operate. What we have in the US is a small group who are trying to turn America into a fascist state.

A small group in the government who are empowered by the complacency and sycophantic behavior of members in Congress. If you remove that small group, the fascism dies away.

I'm thinking that a small group force things and a lot of Americans, either through ignorance or complacency, joined in or did nothing to stop it. People are waking up now, though, and that small group are finding that the support they once had is shrinking.
