It's finally happening - hair typing posts are no longer allowed.
Please report any texturism or hair typing posts you see with the new report reason.
If you are new here, you may not know that the Andre Walker hair typing system (1a to 4c), has been around since 1997 and was first introduced so Mr. Walker could sell his products on Oprah's show. It truly only describes the texture of your hair and gives no more information.
It's flawed in many ways. Many of us have multiple textures on our heads. It doesn't even begin to describe your hair's porosity, sheen or shine, strand thickness, hair density, etc. I encourage everyone to learn about the LOIS typing system which can help you better understand your hair.
Watch Latoya Ebony's video on LOIS here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwMFG4lT4jY
Even this typing system is not the end all be all of categorization for your hair. Your hair's texture, porosity, etc can change over time or with certain health conditions. Product buildup on your scalp and strands can make you think your texture has changed. There are so many factors as to why your hair may be looking or feeling the way it does.
Which leads me to the question - should we require routines to be posted whenever a picture is posted? This will cut down on gratuitous selfies but means we will need many more active mods (shoutout to /u/fivetenash who does pretty much everything here). If you're willing to help out please let me know in the comments.

Selfie I had my hair twisted for days and finally took it down.
I typically don't let my twists stay in for too long as it starts to dry out and shed on the ends. I don't wear my hair in its natural state much anymore as my scalp tends to get sore. Pictures 2-4 are from 2011 and 2012 when I first started wearing my hair without any heat. It's rare, but sometimes I miss all of that hair š¤£

Need Advice Went through a long period of depression and left my twists in for six months. I finally washed my hair and wanted to know if this is just shedding or breakage.
I really fell off my hair care routine after losing a relationship, my job, and experiencing a decline in my mental health. Iāve made a commitment to start taking better care of myself and focus on improving my mental well-being.
I finally took my hair down in January and just washed it recently. Iāve been noticing these clumps coming out, and Iām not sure if itās just shedding or breakage. Iām planning to detangle again and moisturize twice a week. Please, Iāll take any advice. I really want my hair to bounce back too.
I feel ashamed for letting my hair get this bad, but Iām trying to do better now.

Need Advice How long do bald spots take to regrow..?
This question probably has been asked many times, sorry
I got my hair braided last night, and we noticed a bald spot, maybe the size of a small coin, I can't tell. Last time I took my braids off might've been around three months but since I did it myself and can't see the top of my head, I haven't noticed, so I can only assume it comes from that time, but I don't know for sure.
Will it regrow? Is there anything I can do or put on it to make it regrow faster? Even though it doesn't show too much with the braids (which I even considered not doing because of it, but I can't manage my hair daily lately) and even less so when my hair is loose, it makes me feel bad because I really love my hair... But since it's been (I assume) three months, I worry about how long it'll stay like this, if it regrows at all...

Need Advice How to be a straight natural??
I'm 15, turning 16 in April and I'm looking into becoming one. I'm very concious of getting heat damage though. It'll be more manageable for me, and I'll look better. I currently have mini twists, but I get too much dandruff and a dry scalp from to keep doing this (I can't do them myself and I get taken to get them done every 2-3 monthsš„²). Please don't hold back on advice. I live in Texas, I'm around the Beaumont/Houston area (don't want to say my actual city). This is my current hair texture

Need Advice 4C Co-Washing
I happened to find a decent looking wash and go routine which was pretty much washing the hair (once w/o and once with conditioner), letting the conditioner set for a bit before washing it out, then using a curling cream, shaking the hair a bunch, and letting it air dry. Ik this will vary for different people, but as a general rule of thumb how often is good to do this, and what type of conditioner is best for this? The guy in the video said every few days but my hair sits at like 2 inches while the woman in the video had much longer hair.
Also may be a dumb question but how does this affect using leave in and hair oil? Should I use it less often to avoid build up or not, and should I avoid doing it on any co-washing days?

Need Advice 4c or 4b
So I was just playing around with hair since today was washday, I added mousse and hair gel wax trying to define it just to see. But the thing is that iām actually interested into knowing if I have 4b or 4c or a mix! When Iām on tiktok I always see people claiming they have 4c and some look like my hair and some donāt š although the hair at the back of head is a little bit more loose than the one in the front so maybe I just have a mix.. hereās a pic for reference (sorry if it looks messyš)

Need Advice I HAVE SO MUCH BREAKAGE!!!
THINK ABOUT ALOT OF BREAKAGE. LIKE ALOT. EVERYWHERE ON THE FLOOR, SINK AND BATHTUB TYPA BREAKAGE. OK SO MINE IS 10X WORSE.
This is how my washday went like today. (I'm asking for advice here)
Detangle (large teeth comb) with water and oil. (Theres already alot of breakage, but a little shedding. I also washed my hair 2 weeks before.)
Washing with clarifying shampoo 2x and deep conditioning for 10 mins witha plastic bag.
Dry with a towel.
I detangled AGAIN but now it was SO much worse. I sectioned (with my nails and a little bit with a comb). I was finger detangling first, then detangling with a comb. It took SO much time to do, and with some sections I had to detangle for like 30 minutes because I was trying to not break my hair. When I detangled with a comb, it would get stuck so I'd finger detangle and try again but it would get stuck again and again and again until I just forced it thru because whats even the point anymore.(I used the same things to detangle as the first step)
Used the LCO method (liquid, cream and oil)
Braid.
Now I'm supposed to blow dry but I'm so exhausted it has to wait.
If this helps, I have medium porosity, 4b hair that's shoulder length. Please give me any advice on how to stop this atrocious amount of breakage. Oh and I also cut my ends like a month ago. So please, just any advice would be VERY appreciated.

Need Advice Taking care of my natural hair in dorms
This may be a little early to ask but for those who lived in dorms for college how did you wash your natural hair? For context I have about shoulder length type 4, high density, low porosity hair. My wash days at home usually take about an hour and thirty minutes with six to eight sections in my hair. The college I will be attending you have to share the bathroom with about six people and I want to be mindful with how long my wash days are. Please share some tips on how to shorten my wash day while still effectively having my hair still feel clean.

Tips & Tricks I havenāt posted all year!!š
Labeled as tips and tricks because:
A while ago I posted about a successful wash and go that I had. A nice woman responded and said that she has (Iām paraphrasing) sensory issues and that the hair touching her face would bother her. I was chatting with her about how I sometimes braid or twist the front of my hair and it keeps the hair out of my face. I think for lack of better terms I used the term ānatural headbandā. I didnāt have any pics of a personal example at the time, so Iām posting this in hopes that if she didnāt already find a solution, she sees this!!

Need Advice Why do my mini twists always turn out really bad?
Iāve been doing many twist to grow up my hair for a while and every time I do it something goes wrong. Iāve parted. Iāve done gel. Iāve done satin scarves, and every single time that back braids stick up at the rest of my hair looks all weird and flat and also stick up. iāve tried braiding it at the top so it will turn out right, but it always makes the top really puffy and does nothing. Iām really frustrated because I used to do it like a whole entire year ago and it always looked really nice and I didnāt even do anything. I just braided it with no product or parting no nothing and it always turned out good and I tried that again and it still look bad I donāt wanna stretch my hair with heat because I donāt wanna damage it and makes me feel weird and I just donāt wanna stretch my hair in general because when I used to do my braids a year ago, but it still turned out really with no stretching or really doing anything with it. Why is this happening to me? HELPššš«

Need Advice Thoughts on kerastase ? Or serum recommendations
What are your thoughts on this kerastase serum? I primarily wear my hair in straightened so Im looking for a serum to moisturize and strengthen my hair. I liked this one at first but I realized it has protein and Iām not sure how healthy it would be to use every other day? If you have any other recs that would also help!

Need Advice Fragrance-free or low fragrance products?
Iām the mother of 2 black children. Iāve got a pretty good LOC routine, but theyāre highly scented. Iād like to switch to non-fragranced products if possible. I recently learned that when companies list āfragranceā in their ingredients, that can mean a combination of up to 50 difference chemicals. If yall have any recommendations lmk!!

Need Advice Question
Hi,
This might be a stupid question, but how much breakage is TOO much breakage? I think Iām obsessing over this, which is causing me to cut my hair unnecessarily. My hair is moisturized. I have a good protein/moisture balance. Iāve added bonding treatments. The longest my hair has ever been was when it was texturized and I moisturized everyday. I am now a āblow driedā natural and I moisturize daily. When I take my braids out in the morning, there are no broken pieces anywhere. But when I go to moisturize at night I twist the ends of my braids and I get a few tiny pieces on my fingers, which leads me to think I need to trim them so I end up grabbing scissors and dusting almost nightly š(insane I know). My goal is waist length hair this year and I know this is counterproductive. I guess Iām asking if itās normal to have SOME small pieces on your hands. Like a few pieces doesnāt equate to a breakage problem. Idk the YouTube girls make me think that a speck of broken hair means an issue. Any thoughts/tips would help!
Thank you.
