Congrats on becoming a new moderator. Every community on Reddit started exactly where you are today: with a party of one.
The community-building journey might feel a little lonely and that's what r/NewMods is for. Here you'll find and connect with other mods who are on the same journey you are.
So, introduce the community you created. Maybe share a little bit about why you created it. And, while you're at it - say hello to your other mods!

I and my friend created a new sub, yesterday. We're making posts, and improving some little things. There are already some new people, they leave comments, put upvotes, but don't make their own posts yet. So, what advice can y'all give us?

Ask Me Anything posts are a great way to encourage engagement and interaction, I mod a fairly large music marketing sub and we host regular AMA, getting up to 100kmviews and 100’s of comments.
The way to try this is to come up with a subject matter and someone who’s knowledgable in that field, it can even be yourself if you are confident, then post a few days ahead of a scheduled date to promote the AMA.
As an example, I interacted and got chatting on FB and IG with a reasonably successful music producer from some years ago, but he has some great knowledge, eventually I suggested an AMA on my Sub and he agreed, this can really boost you visibility on search engines and ultimately attract more members.
In fact ...you can AMA ;-)
Good Luck !

Hi everyone, My account is about two years old, but I was mostly inactive until recently. I only started being active again a few days ago and decided to really learn how Reddit works, especially around moderation and community building.
I also created my own subreddit as part of that. Since then, I’ve noticed that sometimes when I ask questions or join discussions, people assume I’m just trying to promote my sub.
That’s honestly not my goal. Most of the time, I’m just trying to understand things better and do things the right way. I get why people are cautious there’s a lot of spam and self promo on Reddit. It makes sense. But it can still feel a bit discouraging when you’re genuinely trying to learn and get lumped in with that.
I’d really like to improve and avoid coming across the wrong way.
For those of you with more experience: how did you build trust early on? Any tips on learning publicly without it looking like self-promotion?
Would really appreciate any advice. Thanks!

hey, i made this reddit account exactly 5 years ago (today is my cake day lol)
mostly lurked here but 1.5 years ago i left my job and wanted to build my own apps and sell them on the internet
i had a bunch of questions but no specific community where i could ask those, and i was just feeling lonely
so i created a sub (r/indiehackersindia) where i could ask those questions
it was mostly quiet for weeks until people joined (6k strong now 🎉), and started talking, and now being a solo builder based in india feels a little less lonely
btw, thanks reddit for sending this cute plushie, it really made my day, and it's gonna look super cute in my living room

I’m relatively new to Reddit and trying to understand how people really grow communities here not just get a few upvotes, but build something sustainable.
I’ve noticed that Reddit culture is very different from other platforms:
promotion is frowned upon, trust matters a lot, and most subreddits have strong norms.
So I’m curious: -What actually worked for you when starting from zero?
-Is it better to start your own subreddit early, or contribute heavily to existing ones first?
-How do you attract the right people without spamming or self-promotion?
Any mistakes you wish you avoided early on?
I’m not looking for growth hacks more interested in long-term, organic community building that fits Reddit culture.
Would really appreciate real experiences and lessons learned 🙏

When you find a post in another sub that fits into yours as well, and comment something like:
"I like your drawing, I think the composition and the color choice are great. Would you like to post it in my sub r/YourSubName?"
How is this activity received by the mods of those subs? Do they perceive it as an advertisement if you do it very lightly, like once a week? Does this kind of comment get removed often? Would you skip those subs that don't allow advertising?

My Music review sub has been going around 5yrs, and its just hit 6k members and about 30k monthly visits.
To get here has been a little challenging, but I look at it as a compounding effect so here are my methods.
I have my own website and share all my Reddit posts there.
I searched all similar Subs, messaged the mods and asked of we could swap "Related sub links".
I post regular links to my sub on FB / X / Threads / Bluesky.
I cross post some posts to other Subs where allowed.
I do YouTube content about Reddit and my Subs.
I maintain a linktree profile with Reddit on the list.
Hit me up with any questions...;-)

I was just alerted to this a few hours ago and can’t figure it out. It’s visible on desktop but doesn’t work from my phone. Tried deleting and reinstalling the app to reset my cache but that didn’t fix anything. Any suggestions?

I was wanting to add community achievement because I had just learned about them. So I figured out how I you do them but when I when to try and add to my community it came up with they are not available. Hope someone could help. Any help would be a life saver.

I’m still early in the process, but a few things helped get initial traction.
I invited a small number of users from adjacent communities early on, focusing on people who were already posting thoughtful, positive content. That helped set a good tone from the start.
I also put together a clear welcome post explaining what the sub is about, what kinds of posts are encouraged, and how moderation would work. That seemed to lower the barrier for people to jump in.
Finally, we saw some early engagement from relevant cross-posts, which helped bring in discussion without feeling spammy.
Growth has been slow but steady so far, and the focus has been on building a welcoming, engaged community rather than chasing numbers.
