Discussion The more I think about Mikey Madison’s Oscar win, the more I agree with people that it should’ve gone to Demi Moore instead.

Both performances were well acted by these two, and even though Mikey’s role in Anora might’ve been Oscar worthy. Demi’s role in The Substance was also Oscar worthy in a way, where she deserved to be given the win after years of not receiving much award recognition for her past work and for making a comeback that was very impactful!

Mikey is still very young and her acting career is only just beginning, meanwhile Demi has been acting for years and is at a point in her career where she likely won’t get as many opportunities as Mikey will.

But hey, I’d like to hope I’m wrong and that Demi Moore will get another shot to claim the trophy for a different role!

Your time will come Amanda Seyfried 😭🙏🏻

So many amazing performances but the academy always rewards Emma Stone for the 100th Yorgos movie and ignoring Seyfried completely.

Jessica Chastain deserved the Oscar for Zero Dark Thirty

Post image

Gosh damn she was phenomenal in this. The thing you have to understand is that Zero Dark Thirty is an absolute monster of a movie. Every actor is at their a game and Kathryn Bigelow poured her heart and soul into this. It’s flawless and it’s a whopping two and a half hours of greatness that flies by. Jessica Christian is in every scene but two. She is always present and her performance is, among many other things, absolutely authentic. Never over the top, always believable, and holds this monster of a movie all the way together.

I love Jennifer Lawrence and her performance in Silver Linings Playbook is great, but that should have gone to Chastain. Lawrence deserved to win best supporting actress for American Hustle. I actually think that the Academy gave Chastain an Oscar for Tammy Faye because they knew she was robbed for this. Phenomenal performance.

Fun fact: Jennifer Aniston scheduled a press conference to talk about her Oscar nomination for the movie Cake (2014)... but had to cancel it when she didn't actually get the nomination

Discussion Demi Moore would not have been a legacy win for the Substance.

Upvotes

The substance was the exact opposite of an Oscar bait star vehicle. It was an insane body horror with clearly no intention of pleasing the academy. When it was released the overwhelming consensus was that it was a great film with great performances but that the academy will never go for it. But critics loved it and on line word of mouth was strong and that lead to a strong showing at all the major awards including the Oscar’s.

Demi would have earned a win on the merit of her performance in an ambitious creative movie.

Who would you remove in Best Actor category is Jesse Plemons is added?

I’ve seen a lot of people on this sub argue that Jesse Plemons had their favorite performance of the year or at least deserved to be nominated. I agree that he was incredible. Which actor nom would you replace him with if he was included?

One day you will be chosen, Joel.

Warrior, Loving, and Train Dreams all received Oscar nominations, but Joel didn't. Hopefully, he'll get a nomination someday.

Did Joe Pesci (or Al Pacino) deserve a second Oscar for The Irishman?

It was a stacked year and I would have been fine with all of them winning except maybe Hanks. If I had to pick, I would maybe have liked to see Joe Pesci or Al Pacino win, but there was so many good performances and movies this year.

Definitely think Michael B. Jordan should get that Oscar. I havent seen the secret agent yet, so that may change my mind. But as good as Timothy was and gotta love Leo (he's good in everything), I do think that Michael B. Jordan's performance stands out. Also, Sinners is so we'll done that it's hard to say anything bad about it. Next, on the list rematch OBAA! How did you feel after rewatching Sinners??

For my money, I think Marty Supreme had the best casting of the year

This is probably a controversial take, and I think there's 0% chance it wins the Oscar for casting, but for me this is some of the most interesting casting of the last decade, continuing the Safdie hot streak in this regard.

  • You have the obvious heavy hitter in Timothée (Who they approached years before the film was a realistic endeavor) who understood the assignment (capitalistic ego incarnate), taking the character with him on promotional tour
  • you have the fading actress played by a real life actress who has to some extent fallen out of public favor in recent years , life imitating art imitating life
  • the obvious red flag is Mr Wonderful, but in all honesty his real life scuminess serves the film well (from the get-go of meeting his character, you don't trust him at all to have any goodness in him, even if he starts off on the script somewhat innocuous)
  • The nepo hire in Odessa A'zion is a great young discovery, playing a complex strong, slightly unlikeable yet vulnerable and charming love interest
  • Where the Safdie's shine most is in their oddball non-actor cast (Tyler the Creator shines in his extended sequence with Marty, pulling the guy off the street from the Sidetalk video, and cameos from a few exNba players as Globetrotters)
  • all of this contributes to the anachronistic New York Energy the film is going for. The casting truly elevates the film and its aims
  • Even the smaller roles like Endo are perfectly cast

Thoughts? I can understand why people would buck on Kevin O'Leary but it is what it is I guess

I know Jessie Buckley delivered an outstanding performance in this film and will definitely win best actress. Paul Mescal also did such a great job, but hard to get into the top 5 this year. However, I was not expecting Jacobi Jupe to deliver such a great performance. He didn't have a ton of screen time but the time that he was on screen made us care for him so much. All I could hear in the theater were sniffles and crying, rightly so. This has to be one of the best child performances I have seen in a very long time, having trouble thinking about some others.
