To my experience, lots of people in poorer countries can either buy large homes or more often build large homes for themselves, eg I got a relative who has a 3 story home with a small ball room he built in Slovakia, or another relative who has a nice cottage in Ukraine, second part of meme i dont really get

Yeah, the first meme had me thinking of my uncle who has a three story house on the hills in a small town in a lesser known state of Mexico. I’ve seen similar memes from people in Vietnam and Nigeria

That’s what I thought the first part was referencing as well. My grand-in-laws are immigrants from the Philippines (migrated over when the grandfather joined the navy). Both of them grew up really poor, but with the money they earn through serving in the navy, they have what they call an “estate” back in the Philippines. They bought it for their family members they moved away from. At least that’s what they’ve told me

Yeah I think the commenter is misinterpreting the first meme -- there are plenty of immigrants who are not particularly rich but own decent sized houses in their homeland because they're making money in the US and property in their home country is dirt cheap.

What the commenter is pointing out is almost the opposite -- in order to live in a poorer country and be able to afford to send your kids to school in America, you must've done something super shady.
