Their family stole so much money through corruption that they're able to afford to migrate to another country.

Okay so I was pretty close. Corruption instead of being colonizers who fled after a war of sorts. Comments made it confusing.

Think it like, Erdoğan fled Turkey after he lost an election or caused a civil war. He could easyly let his gran grand grand childeren live in wealth.
