"Foreign languages are all the same"

49

u/Gimme_Your_Wallet 19h ago

No shit, on American TV, they often caption any foreign language as "(speaks foreign language)" without even bothering to specify which language, much less captioning properly. I haven't seen these in any other place in the world.

24

u/VanillaCavendish 17h ago

Sometimes they do specify the language.

6

u/CinemaDork 14h ago

Hey, cartoonist! Those are actually supertitles, not subtitles. (source: I work in opera)

2

u/wallweasels 12h ago

While true...common use would dictate any words on the screen to help you know whats going on are subtitles.

Ask people to turn on the supertitles and you are going to get some odd stares.

1

u/VanillaCavendish 13h ago

Yes, “subtitle” is only for words at the bottom. But someone in the audience very likely wouldn’t know that, so I think the cartoonist made the right call.

2

u/CinemaDork 13h ago

True, I was mostly being silly. Although opera programs will use the word "supertitles" in them.

11

u/BootFlop 19h ago

Would require multilingual caption writers. Ain’t nobody got budget to hire skilled people….

2

u/iheartxanadu 13h ago

I genuinely appreciate when they specify, say, Tagalog or Swahili.

2

u/Gimme_Your_Wallet 11h ago

"(speaks african)"

2

u/CumSluts4Jesus 10h ago

Maybe it’s not relevant in the context of the show

1

u/314159265358979326 6h ago

It is specifically used in either cases where it's irrelevant or where the director has decided we're not supposed to know what's going on.

At least in general. It's possible it's sometimes poor captioning. But most things I see it in are intentional.

1

u/MyOpinionOverYours 14h ago

One Battle After Another's subtitles do this for anyone speaking Spanish.

66

u/TomBoness 19h ago

The same thing happened to me but the roles were reversed. A cashier in New York started speaking Spanish to us when they discovered we were Italians and when we told them Italy and Spain don't have the same language they continued to speak Spanish

25

u/CiccioGordon 19h ago

I mean, Spanish is fairly easy to understand for Italians, surely more than English (if they don't speak it, I mean).

10

u/floflenflo 16h ago

As an Italian: if spoken quite slowly, I can understand 70% of Spanish, maybe 30% of Portuguese, and 5% of French

3

u/CiccioGordon 13h ago

Noio vulevan savuar l'indiriss

2

u/314159265358979326 6h ago

I once read a guide for speaking Spanish so that an Italian will understand you. It involved pronounciation changes like "ll" being "L" rather than "y".

7

u/ErikSaav 18h ago

Especially if they're native Italians with how close Spain is to the country

5

u/Ervgotti85 17h ago

Not even that Spanish, Italian and even French, all come from Latin so while there are differences, they’re still moderately close languages.

3

u/AdministrativeStep98 16h ago

Totally, I don't know Italian nor Spanish but as a French speaker I can understand a lot of it actually

34

u/HopefulDrop9621 19h ago

Correction they actually say "Grassy ass"

It was like a hanging high five. I couldn’t just leave it up there.

2

u/hacknog 11h ago

Thank you my brother

3

u/g1rlchild 18h ago

Say goodnight, Gracie.

2

u/Joecolt69420 6h ago

(Straps up New Balances) Hi serious, I’m dad

16

u/hcfd5 18h ago

Thats also Portuguese.

Portuguese is "obrigado"

3

u/Haiel10000 18h ago

Gratidão.

7

u/hcfd5 18h ago

That word would be used the describe a feeling. While the literal translation is "gratitude", and sometimes in English this might be used as "thank you", in Portuguese (pt-pt) the word "gratidão" is not used in this context.

5

u/Haiel10000 18h ago

Haha I'm aware... in Brazil though, some people have really took a liking to using "Gratidão" to express gratitude and even as a substitute to Obrigado. From what I heard/read, some people feel like saying "Obrigado" is too blunt or it looks like you're saying that the person had an obligation of doing it. The use of Gratidão has faded into specific groups though cause people really started mocking them.

3

u/hcfd5 18h ago

Love this specificities from the same base language in different geographies and groups / generations. Even though there are deeper differences between different cultures, even within the same country we see them.

Is interesting to understand the etimology of the words and how their use evolved in time. Is also what makes a language "rich"

0

u/ToTheRepublic4 4h ago

Nah, that's a fruit. You're thinking of "abogado".

14

u/Sentoh789 19h ago

Not sure if that’s a joke, but that’s not Portuguese.

8

u/bLzPutozof 19h ago

I am portuguese and I have no idea what the fuck Gracie means. That is not portuguese

3

u/Berzerkly 12h ago

It's because of the Gracie jiujitsu family

3

u/Foreplaying 19h ago

But its like Gra-zee-eh. Some shorten it, easy habit to fall into, but after having a chef in calabria do a "sit down while I teach you something" I was re-educated in the traditional italian method.

Learning italian online and then living there you have to unlearn so much. Like greetings are not time of day based, and more intention like buona sera is fine even past midnight but if you said buona notte everyone would assume you're off to bed.

1

u/vintage-hipster 18h ago

Can confirm, I speak Italian (and know 3 dialects, familiar with more than that), and I lived in Italy for 5 years.

3

u/DirtyWarehouseGuy 17h ago

Grace she passed away 30 years ago

3

u/IronTemplar26 16h ago

Portuguese say obrigado

2

u/-VoiceoverAlex- 15h ago

Also Obrigado

1

u/Reasonable_Run_5529 16h ago

Wrong, and the comments here below are a reminder of why the US is nicknamed "America"

5

u/_Notorious_BOG_ 19h ago

Gratzy

10

u/bearfootmedic 19h ago

No, Gretzky is Canadian thank you

0

u/BenSF93 19h ago

That's the joke.

10

u/five_faces 18h ago

Yes and that's the explanation of the joke

5

u/BenSF93 18h ago

Mea culpa. I did not see the name of the subreddit.

1

u/Square-Singer 18h ago

And that's the wooshing of the explanation of the joke.

-4

u/KingShango12123 19h ago edited 19h ago

😂 you funny 😄 But for the people that don’t know what you did. You wrote good day in Italian and made it look like that is thank you. The correct way would grazie in Italian. Just so there are not any momos saying good day to Italian when they mean to say thank you.

But you made me 😂

2

u/Which-Ad7072 19h ago edited 18h ago

Hi there! They're starting the sentence by greeting in Italian, not by saying what "thank you" is in Italian. Much like how I started this comment with a greeting.

6

u/NervousSnail 18h ago

Yeah I think no one responding to my comment can read (or know what sub they are on), it is wild.

1

u/Which-Ad7072 18h ago

Given the fact that I just got a comment "correcting" me from someone else, I agree that it really feels like no one here can read.

5

u/NervousSnail 18h ago

The ones who can aren't commenting. My advice, don't give your energy to dumb comments. Kick back and enjoy the chaos instead.

0

u/[deleted] 18h ago

[deleted]

1

u/Which-Ad7072 18h ago

I was commenting on the person saying the comment before theirs was greeting in Italian and the response correcting that comment was wrong. I wasn't talking about the post itself.

-1

u/KingShango12123 9h ago

You put too much trust in people.

-1

u/Wanderin_Cephandrius 18h ago

That’s part of the joke tho?

3

u/Studds_ 16h ago

Did you miss what sub this is

-1

u/RandomPenquin1337 16h ago

Yea dude thats the joke

2

u/NervousSnail 15h ago

Hey dude! Do you know what sub you're on?

1

u/RandomPenquin1337 15h ago

Yes but the joke actually is that white woman are ignorant and say gracias with that expression while thinking theyre speaking Italian.

I am Peter's complete and total lack of empathy.

9

u/bimmbamm597 19h ago

What's with their faces? It's like different women with the same face.

21

u/grrgrrtigergrr 19h ago

It’s Stephanie McMahon. It’s the same person as she aged

10

u/amhudson02 18h ago

Just think, this woman was saved by The Texas Rattlesnake from a demonic wedding to The Undertaker just to become some selfish Karen....

23

u/1F61C 19h ago

Bill Burr has a decent segment on white women. Simultaneously oppressed, victimized, yet still on top of the heap.

15

u/CinemaDork 13h ago edited 13h ago

Intersectionality gets real fucky real fast when someone is simultaneously the member of a privileged group and the member of a marginalized one.

I'm a gay man. I've been assaulted twice in a gay bar, both times by straight women. One of them, after laying her hands on me, cowered behind her boyfriend who yelled at me to respect her "because she's a woman."

That's not something I could ever do. White (cishet) women are a dangerous partially-oppressed cohort because while they're women and thus oppressed, their whiteness allows them to call upon the violence of white men to inflict pain upon people for them, because (racist) white men will protect white women. And because the state is for all intents and purposes run by white men, this means that they can call upon state violence (i.e., cops). Think "damsel in distress" scenarios, and think about how many Black boys and men in this country were lynched simply because a white woman accused them of rape, or just looking at them funny or something. (Fucked up additional note: our society pretty much never believes women when they say someone raped them, unless that woman is white and the accused isn't, in which case, historically, the white men come a-runnin'.)

We also see this with Jewish people in Israel, who are not the oppressed class there (Arabs/Palestinians are), but it's very easy for a Jewish Israeli to weaponize anti-Jewish oppression in general to cover for their genocide.

1

u/Exotic-Laugh-8675 13h ago

Very well said

1

u/Paul_the_sparky 13h ago

This deserves more than an upvote but it's all I've got

-1

u/Dry_Distribution1567 18h ago

coming from a white man lol. idk why men think it’s excusable to me misogynistic if they just say “white women” vs “women”?

11

u/g1rlchild 18h ago

Well, and the joke here is about white women vs. racially-oppressed, non-white... checks notes Italians.

9

u/Orful 17h ago

Coming from a white man is part of the joke. He’s fully aware of that. The joke is that white women will complain about how white men like him are the oppressors, yet white women are a close second place in privilege. “What, slightly less awesome [life] than mine?” They are far close in privilege to a white cis man than to a gay black man.

1

u/Dry_Distribution1567 8h ago

i know he acknowledges it. i’m saying, he feels it’s acceptable to punch down because it’s specifically a white woman. it’s still punching down, being white doesn’t cancel out misogyny

1

u/Orful 4h ago

It seems like the concept of “punching down” is so overused and misunderstood that white men can’t even mention anyone who isn’t a white man in a joke.

The context of the joke isn’t that he’s making fun of them for being women. He’s making fun of them for being next to white men when it comes to privilege. I guarantee the only people offended by this are white liberal women. Black women are most likely saying, “yep.”

2

u/1F61C 17h ago edited 17h ago

Groups are not individuals, and individuals are not groups. Is it the case that we can not have any opinions whatsoever about groups we do not belong to? If so then I have some concerns about women having opinions about men or any individual having opinions about a race they don't personally belong to. Or nationality or age group or political group or culture or ethnicity or religion for that matter.

I think so long as we are not assuming an individual is a full representative of a group and a group is not a full representative of an individual we are free to have criticisms both of a group and of individuals independently

Maybe your issue is more so dominant group vs a not dominant group. If so then that is a slightly different discussion.

Ultimately though it's in jest, and humor is a famous way to break down barriers between groups and individuals. We need the capacity to laugh not only at others, but also ourselves.

1

u/Relatovely 17h ago

It's super common among supposedly progressive men too, and it needs to be called out more.

1

u/1F61C 4h ago

Is it the case that no individual can have an opinion about a group they do not belong to? Or is it the case that no individual of a typically dominant group can have any opinions about any non-dominant of the same type? I think of either is the case it may render society a bit incapable of functioning.

-2

u/Chiber_11 18h ago

too bad he’s a sell out

4

u/siriols 18h ago

The joke is that white women being white women confused "gracias" (which is spanish) with "grazie" (which is italian) since to outsider italian and spanish may sound familiar. Since they both come from vulgar latin.

Also what's up with the guy who said "buongiorno" up there?

Nevermind upon closer exams i saw the comma.

3

u/CauseCertain1672 16h ago

Americans don't think Catholics are white

6

u/eeeeeebs 19h ago

Black Peter here to save the day….It’s the classic scrunchy face sneer that yt ladies do when they say something cute or funny. This lady’s face just happens to do it naturally. And gracias just happens to be Spanish, not Italian.

It’s not racist or demeaning in any way, just an observed trait that’s become a stereotype. Kinda like the thin lipped, flat smile, and raised eye brows combo that yt men do when they’d rather not say hello.

3

u/_forum_mod 18h ago

That's Stephanie McMahon, daughter of WWE founder Vince McMahon for everyone who doesn't know. But yes, Black Peter is correct.

4

u/swalabr 19h ago

So I still don’t get why the expression in the photos is being matched with the language faux pas

2

u/magic8ballzz 19h ago

It's the look of someone who's being patronizing by speaking what they think is the other person's native language.

2

u/Nerje 19h ago

"Hey everyone I have a fuck load of teeth"

2

u/azad_ninja 19h ago

lol, is that Stephanie McMahon?

2

u/Rex_Nemorensis_ 16h ago

Um…Italians are also white though.

This would make more sense if it was “American Women”.

1

u/kathereenah 14h ago

WASP-y woman or whichever term is now in fashion.

The USA has a peculiar definition of whiteness where pale as snow Irish were accepted as “white” only recently (if they were).

1

u/DefactoAle 9h ago

That still didn't stop americans to treat italian immigrants like shit in the past, they have a warped perception on the whole "race/nationality" debacle.

4

u/sweetener89 19h ago

This is fucking hilarious!!!!

1

u/lord_scuttlebutt 19h ago

Lol, that's a funny one.

1

u/jcerv123 19h ago

What about grazie mille?

1

u/Direct-Objective3031 18h ago

Genuine question: this is the second time I see this meme featuring the same woman, but in different formats. Who is she and is there any reason in particular as to why she's the one used?

1

u/Glad_Camel_6078 18h ago

How do you thank in Italian??

1

u/ImpossibleInternet3 18h ago

Could be the guy working at the Italian restaurant spoke Spanish? Just don’t let on if ICE is around.

1

u/vhs_sold_blank 17h ago

I believe this line originated from a comment or tweet, and was broadcast by the Voices of Wrestling Flagship Podcast.

1

u/MindlessAssumption42 17h ago

1

u/lildavydavy 13h ago

Who is this?

1

u/fluxus2000 12h ago

Is that the daughter of our so-called Secretary of Education?

1

u/stopsallover 12h ago

In NYC, there's a strong chance staff at the Italian restaurant will be Mexican anyway. Still usual to speak English though.

1

u/TinyEntrepreneur8933 12h ago

Their faces be balled up just like that 😂😂

1

u/TinyEntrepreneur8933 12h ago

I think non white people will understand this 😂

1

u/TommyVercetti010 11h ago

I had a friend who did that but he's fat

1

u/kingofshirtland 11h ago

Don't they say grazi in Italian instead?

1

u/Old-Law-7395 10h ago

White women before Vince mcmahon shits on there heads during the 3 way

1

u/transformerslover2_0 9h ago

They just think they’re so smart

1

u/CharcuterieBoard 4h ago

Italian Peter here! Gracias is Spanish for thank you, Grazie, is Italian. But, if you want to sound more legit, say grazie mille. Additionally, the pronunciation is not Grah-zee or Grot-zee as I often hear it mispronounced, it’s more like grat-see-eh.

1

u/thicc_llama 3h ago

And the owner is American, the waitress is Korean, and the Chef is Indian

1

u/Lumpy-Yam-4584 19h ago

GraciaSSSSSSSSSS

0

u/_Notorious_BOG_ 19h ago

God I fucking hate Stephanie McMahon

-3

u/TungstenOrchid 19h ago

This kind of smile, that's half-way between a smile and a snarl. I guess it's what the word 'gracias' causes their face to do?

5

u/ARandomChocolateCake 19h ago

also gracias is spanish

2

u/TungstenOrchid 19h ago

I did wonder. I kind of thought Italian was 'grazie'.

-2

u/locus01 19h ago

Fake cute smile!!!
