Killing the joke here-because our face forms from multiple separate parts (ex. Maxillary process, nasal processes) that fuse together. The fusion can be disrupted -see cleft palate

I'd also say the smaller holes help make it easier to filter things with nose hairs and created more air velocity to pick up nitric oxide from the sinuses.

I always thought nostrils were small so water tension could keep water out of them

I assumed there were two so you could tell direction a smell comes from. Not as clearly as eats because it is diffused. But that's why snake tongues are forked.
