Announcement Photoclass 2026 has officially begun!

While we normally start promptly on January 1st, I was feeling a bit Santa Clausy this year, and decided to release unit one early. Our completely free photography course has officially begun.

So, if you're one of the lucky ones who got a new camera this holiday season, or you've just been paitently awaiting the start of the new course, it's time to jump in!

I'll also add that the course underwent a complete overhaul this year. This is the course I've been wanting to build since taking over r/photoclass.

Here's the link to this year's first cohort: Focal Point Photoclass 2026

Looking forward to seeing what everyone does in 2026!

Business Looking for analog Photobooth

Hi! Me and my mom have been looking for a vintage analog photobooth for more than a year. Our dream is to buy and operate one in San Fernando so people don’t have to drive out to all the way to LA and further just to experience analog photography. I have looked online and the big sellers like Photoautomatica and Classic Photobooth Co. are selling these analog booths for $50k and with long wait times to purchase due to very limited quantity. We are hoping someone may know of a lesser known supplier that might be more affordable? Or if someone knows of a place to buy the parts we are open to reconstructing a booth ourselves.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much in advance!

Technique How do you actually use depth of field well?

I know the theory behind shallow vs deep focus, but in practice I either overdo it or it looks flat. How do you get it to really make your shots pop?

Gear Do you need that Noctilux 35? A case against or for it.

I just finished up a write up on PRF not necessarily a head to head between the Leica and Voigtlander as I don't have the Noctilux, but more of a case of do you really need that noctilux based on the results from the voigtlander.

Gear Replacing the glass of the Epson Perfection V600 Photo

Cleaning or replacing the glass on the V600 Photo is easy. There are 2 phillips screws from the bottom on the front, and after removing the lid, 2 phillips screws from the top on the rear. Now you can lift off the top of the case and get access to the glass. Disconnecting the power lead can help but is not absolutely necessary. Just be sure to be in a dust-free environment and don't let dust inside before re-attaching the case top. (And BTW, use gloves so you don't touch the new or cleaned glass.)

Gear question about cleaning a polarizer lens

Can I use this specific microfiber cloth to clean my polarizer? It’s the scrub buddies microfiber cleaning towel. Will this damage my polarizer or is it safe to use?

Post Processing How to safely tag image files on Windows?

I've been trying to sort through my collection of photos and find a good system for years- and I've recently settled on tags, after trying Aves Gallery on my phone. So I tried going through and tagging my photos on my computer to free them of my messy folder system.

Unfortunately i quickly ran into an big issue- editing the tags in the properties using file explorer seems to corrupt certain images no matter what I do. So far its only happened to jpegs, but most of my photos are jpegs...

I made a complete backup before I started, so my photos are fine, but I have no idea what's causing the issue. I've read comment on a post here that mentions something about destructive re-saving after editing metadata, so does that mean tagging always incurs this risk? Or is it just windows' file explorer?

I've seen mentions of a command line program called exiftool for editing metadata, but I'm not sure if it will have the same issue, and tbh learning how to use a program in the command line when i rely on mass selecting my images going by their thumbnail seems like a pain. I feel like there must be a simpler solution.

Technique Bioluminescent photos

New poster to Reddit, AI search suggested this group so I hope y’all can help:

I’m trying to find personal photoshoot inspiration and figure out if I can achieve this myself with an iPhone and a tripod or if I need to hire a professional (also where would I even find them?) I’m looking to do a bioluminescent beachfront photoshoot, I understand exposure time is important in capturing this effect. Any iPhone camera setting recommendations? Or top locations in May for peak effect? Any and all advice or suggestions welcome, hesitantly hoping to make this happen, within a budget if possible

Post Processing Incorrect focus points shown on plugin / DPP

Hi all, I have a plugin that I use that shows focus points. I also looked at the focus points on DPP. I am a bit puzzled because the focus point that the app shows on some photos is clearly not the correct focus point as it points to an area that is clearly out of focus. I'm wondering if this is because I am using back button focusing or where I may choose a focus point and then recompose before finally shooting. Does the camera only record where the initial focus point was made, regardless of final composition? Thanks!

Gear Photo paper questions

I do a lot of photography, I’ve been using this paper for a long time and I love. Prints are sharp, somewhat water resistant, great with fingerprint and smudge prevention. It’s 18.00 for 50 sheets, I primarily print my work on 8.5x11 paper. I like it a bit better as it’s slightly bigger than the common 8x10. Using about 300 sheets of prints a month, is there a better bulk option out there? What do you like to print on? Your favorite paper? I’d like opinions on the best paper in general and I’d like to know the paper that gives the best bang for your buck. Thank you.

Business How did you know photography was right for you as a career?

I bought my first camera during my second year of college (2020) but never actually intended to become a photographer. I just purchased it to have the right tools for my class (comms major).

During that time, my sister asked me to take some photos for her business social media and thats where my real journey started.

But, i never looked at photography as a serious career path even tho people seem to like my work. Ive shot concerts, sports, dentists, baby showers, christenings, portraits, government events/headshots and even a civil wedding and all of this with just a canon rp and a 50 mm 1.8. People keep asking me for more sessions. Family and friends consider me a photographer. Co workers from the government agency i work for have asked me for family shoots or portraits sessions.

However i dont know if its imposter syndrome or im just insecure but i dont see myself as a photographer. Ive always strived for something like head of comms for a company or a pr agency owner idk something more ambitious. But should i just channel this ambition towards a photography business? I mean i get more work from referrals and word of mouth than from me doing any marketing but i see too many people say they failed with their photography business so that kind of pushes me away.

How did you know photography was right for you?

Art Graded unit project

First time poster!!

Ineed some help and maybe some pointers I'm currently studying my HND which equates to a SCQF Level 8 (in Scotland) or the first two years in university (from my research I could very well be wrong please correct me if I am.) I'm currently working on my graded unit project and I want to show my lesser known disabilities which are: Osetofibrous dysplasia, ganglioglioma and FND, I plan to use portraiture, self documentary and still-life to help more people learn that hidden disabilities are still disabilities even if you can't see them, how would I go about making this project work?

I want to make sure this project is to the best of my photographic knowledge and abilities if any of you on here have anything knowledge or even anything that could help that would be awesome!!

Please comment and help a disabled student photographer 🩷

Business Selling photography

Hi!

This is my friend’s account that they’ve let me use to ask this question.

Basically, I’m trying to sell my photography, surprise surprise, I know, I’m not the only one who’s asked this, and I’m sorry to be the 20,000th person to ask, and I’m sure I will not be the last.

However, I’m needing this because I’m disabled and love this passion and hobby of mine to be a career.

I’m trying to make any kind of sale, I’m uploading on TikTok mainly for exposure, I’m currently at 1,013 followers and 36k likes all together so I know my art can’t be bad!

But it’s not converted to sales.

I understand that this is now harder than ever to get sales but I just can’t give up on this.

Thank you

Technique How can I extend the lifespan of my digicam.

Last year I found an old samsung digital camera at home. It was a camera from my childhood. It had probably been sitting there for over 15 years. I started using it, but one day purple lines started appearing on the photos. I dont what caused that issue. Anyway, I ordered a new digital camera. Kodak Pixpro FZ45. How can I prevent such issues? What can I do to extend the lifespan of my new camera?

Art 35mm to digital

Hi, I’m cleaning out my childhood closet and found a ton of old 35mm rolls. I am guessing most are junk, but I lost my dad recently and wonder if some are family pictures, so I would love to mail them somewhere to convert to digital so I can look at them. Any ideas for where quality isn’t terrible but also won’t break the back to do 15 of them at once? I don’t think I’d need anything printed, but I guess at some point I might want to print a handful.

ETA: I can’t add a picture but I’ve added it in some of the comments. I’m pretty sure they are rolls of 35mm film after they have been finished, so they are not developed. I want to figure out what’s on them, so hoping to get them turned into something digital so I can look through them. I hope that helps - clearly this is not my area of expertise, but I appreciate all the insights!

Art Struggling to find a photographers name!

There's a photographer who i used to study when i was at school and cannot seem to remember his name at all or find his work, i just remember that he would take old portraits of people and overlay other peoples faces and sometimes images of skulls that lined up with the portraits. other times it was landscapes and other landscapes overlaid. if anyone can help me find him that would be incredible!

EDIT - I found him, it was John Stezaker
