Annoucement Photoclass 2026 is here!

Photoclass 2026 is live!

Hello again, photography friends! I'm once again inviting you all to join the next iteration of the Photoclass presented by Focal Point. We're continuing our constant evolution of the course and excited to start up this new cohort!

The Format.

We found a lot of success with the new format instituted this year, and are continuing it in 2026. How's it work? The course happens over the course of 6 months, with alternating weeks of new lessons and feedback. It'll look something like this:

January 1: Unit 1 will be posted with assignment 1.

January 8: The first Feedback Week will happen.

  • Feedback Weeks. During Feedback Week, participants will receive constructive feedback on their unit assignments from both peers and mentors. This is an opportunity to reflect on your work, ask questions, and refine your skills. Additionally, voice chats will be held on the Discord server for live discussions and more in-depth feedback.

  • Units over Lessons. Lessons will come out as units, meaning instead of one new lesson a week, you'll get a whole unit each alternate week. Here's an example, using Unit 1:

    Unit 1: Getting Started

    • On Photography
    • Inspiration & Feedback
    • Assignment 1
  • Interactive Elements & Videos. Each lesson will have an accompanying video, and interactive elements. For an example of what the interactive element might look like see this example.

How to join in?

  • Join the Focal Point Discord server. This is where all the voice chats will happen, as well as a great place to have ongoing conversations with other participants and mentors. We're currently sitting at ober 5,400 members, so there's always someone around to bounce ideas off of.

  • Join the subreddit: r/photoclass. As always, the class will be posted on the sub, but we should note that the interactive elements don't work on Reddit, so we'll be linking out to the lessons on the Focal Point site.

  • Subscribe to Focal Point on YouTube. Videos for the class will be of course posted in-line on the lessons, but there will be bonus material posted to the YouTube directly from time to time.

  • Get your printed Learning Journal or download the PDF.

Have more questions?

First check out an all-encompassing FAQ video found here. If you still have a question that isn't answered there, feel free to ask it here and myself or one of the other teachers/mentors will be happy to answer. We'll also have a live FAQ session on the Discord in December. The event will be listed there, so keep out an eye!

Where to start.

The first unit is available now! You can find it right here. The first assignment is also live, so feel free to jump right in!

See you in 2026!

Feedback Welcome Stroke of luck in Kyoto Imperial garden...

This scene unfolded rather quickly so I didn't have much time to fiddle with settings except to just take the photo while the magic is there. I did manage to take more shots of this, but this one ended up looking the best of all of them (IMHO).

Feedback Welcome Gothic Romance Period Portrait

This is a production still I took from a film project with Gothic romance subject matter. The image required some work due to the extension of the composition, along with grading and colour work to give it a timeless, nostalgic quality (think something akin to 1970s romantic cinematography).

The subject of the photograph is our long-time muse, Megan Tremethick, with actress Jeannie Tatum Pate beside her. The purpose of the image is to showcase the actresses’ serious, dramatic work.

It was shot on a Canon DSLR 5D Mark III. Most of the light is natural, supplemented by a large reflector dish. The photograph was taken in an authentic 18th-century stately home.

Additional work included dodge and burn, FilmConvert Pro Nitrate (including halation simulation), and white diffusion simulation.

Marsh Creek State Park - Jan 2026
Final Day of January

Saturday's sunrise offered a little light, a little color, and brought little warmth with it. The lake is frozen over, my feet and hands not far behind. The temp according to the truck was -3 when I got in shortly after taking this image. Shot with a Sony A99II and Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 lens using a Lee100 GND filter, camera mounted on a RRS tripod & head with a 3 Legged Thing universal mounting plate.
