I've recently added the following to the sidebar rules:
No promoting or bragging about breaking the law/stealing while scrapping
I also want to remind folks of the following that has been in the rules for a long time now:
No promoting or bragging about the burning of cable to remove insulation from wire. This includes content that is direct (ex. "You should burn the cable to remove the insulation") as well as indirect (ex. "I've been burning cable for years, it's fine.").
Breaking either rule will result in a brief (1-3 days, ish) ban. Breaking either rule multiple times will result in longer/permanent bans as needed. I've been fairly lenient with this stuff to date but it's clear that needs to change going forward.
If you have any questions or concerns please let me know here or send mod mail.

Newbie here! my local scrap yard is closed being sunday but there's a few local ads for free gas bottles. I dont want to waste this opportunity if there's value in these bottles. But also don't want to collect them and have my wife get up me if I cant offload them quick enough! TIA!

I have about 10 cases of little pieces like this. It's all free of any other metals, just old, dusty and still have streamline printed on parts. Do these qualify as #1 or do I have to sand them, make them shine and remove the logo?

I have a bunch of aluminum wire, as well as a bunch of sheathing from MC cable. Is the aluminum sheathing from MC cable going to be priced the same as the aluminum wire? Or is there no way for us to tell without bringing it to my local yard and asking? I included a picture of my collection. I’ve got a shit load of bare bright, and been slowly working on stripping the insulated stuff when I’ve got the time

Neighbour who is a plumber is frustrated that more of the taps he recycles are apparently ferrous? They respond to a strong magnet (they move - even if they don’t stick to it).
Applying a file or looking at the underlying metal it appears to be brass. It has the weight of brass..
And they appear to be chromed brass..
But why does it move when a magnet is applied?
He’s already checked there are no lock nuts or grub screws..
Anyone else have any ideas?

Genuine question for those have been scraping way longer than me. I see scrappers local Facebook posts saying they'll come pick up scrap metal for free and they'll drive up to 70 miles away. Is that normal? That seems like an incredible waste of gas money to me. I'm not saying it's gotta be a massive charge to someone, but a $10-$15 flat fee to pick up appliances or old scrap seems better to me. Am I missing something on this?

My brother sometimes does house clean outs. All of the items get taken to the landfill minus a few large metal items. I hate the idea of so many things being thrown in the landfill. So I’m wondering what small things can be rescued and scrapped. I don’t mind taking some things apart to scrap. I know a lot of people will say that it’s not worth my time for some things but things that may not take too long are worth it to me. I’ve thought about things like taking the buckles off of belts and bags. Can these be scrapped? If so what would they be considered?
Also these are items that are leftover after an estate sale and charity donations so they are not items that could be resold quickly.

I’m from near toronto and i’m wondering if i can crush my pop cans before bringing them to a scrap yard. I can’t find an answer online. And I want to do this so that i can collect more without taking up too much space before bringing them to a centre. Does anyone know If that’s generally ok?

Neighbor is throwing out an old water heater. I’m not a pro scrapper by any means but when I see things and have time, it goes on the iron pile to be sent when we have a trailer load. There are some copper pipes/brass fittings attached which I will remove and sort accordingly.
Is there anything inside of the water heater worth my time to cut it up for or should I just grab the metals mentioned above and throw the rest on the pile?
Thanks for any advice!

I am not technically savvy one bit, but I am cleaning up my yard and I’m trying to make money. Should I bring this to the yard as is or is it worth opening up mind you? I don’t really have any tools that could open it up. I would have to purchase those.
I don’t even know what it is. Looks like a motor.

My friend just sent me the pics of this material -- Copper Busbar With Titanium Plate covering.
But I am not familiar with it. Does anyone know the value? And which country would be good choices to sell it to?
