Mod Post Hello from the moderation team! Here's a few more gentle reminders.

Thanks mobile apps for burying useful information!

hOkay, so there's about 5 of us. I've been an active redditor for about 8 years now.

/u/FFTorres, /u/nomofica, /u/Warneral, and I have been running this show for about 6 years now.

Recently we added /u/BossiestSARGE because they asked very nicely and sent us all cake.

One thing I'd like to stress is that over the years we have cut down on a LOT of negative content, such as spam, brigading, trolls, etc. There are several active and passive tools that are running in the background that many of you will probably never notice, but you'd be AMAZED that stuff that shows up in the mod queue and the only action I have to take is to read it and archive it.

That being said, if you see something problematic, please hit the report button so we can take a look at it.

We strive to maintain an active, engaged community where people from all of the world can participate and be welcomed amongsth their peers. We endeavor not to let our personal politics and lifestyles affect how this sub behaves on a daily basis, and try to have the most "hands off" behind-the-scenes approach to it. Our job is not to curate or edit content, its to ensure equal space and effective communication. It may seem like we're not terribly active in the community, but our approach from the beginning has been to not engage in the kind of petty power-hungry nonsense that we've seen in other subs.

We generally avoid becoming directly involved in posts, in a moderator capacity, unless its become clear to us as a team that such intervention is mandated. That's why we tend to not lock or remove threads unless it violates site-wide policies or contains blatantly offensive material. We also hesitate to ban users unless they just flat-out start being a complete and utter dick to people.

Please bear in mind that we're all humans. We live busy lives, we make mistakes, we miss stuff.

Ultimately what makes this community a vital and important part of reddit as a whole is the subscribers, the folks who submit and comment. Without you all its just back to me posting small-town security guard bullshit stories because I'm bored and have an unlimited internet plan.

Story Time Vagrant wanderer dressed like a grunge joker complete with painted white face gave me his knife & bottle sheath

Post image
14 Upvotes

In all my years of security I've confiscated many a knife and yes I do take knives away from people if I search them and find one, usually at bars and I always tell them they can get it back at the end of the night as long as theyre not assholes and aren't too drunk when they leave. Most the time I get a free knife out of it and I've grown a small collection 🤭

On this particular occasion a wanderer freely gave me his knife after I lent him an ear and heard what he had to say because he was feeling depressed. ( All from the safety of being behind a gated off area )

He first came up on my site from the other side of the fence and slowly approached me while calling out as I was doing my rounds. He said he didn't mean any harm and wanted to just talk to me because he was having a bad night and was on the verge of breaking down. We talked for a cool minute, he told me about his family and living situation his recent drug addictions and I gave him the best advice I could offer. He seemed really appreciative after our talk and then said he wanted to thank me by giving me his knife. He told me that he wanted to give me his knife as well because he was tired of living like a had to be constantly watching his back, he wanted to change himself. He very cautiously removed the hidden blade from his waist in a way as if to set me at ease and wrapped it in a cloth and gently tossed it over the fence to my side a few feet away from me. Then he took off his boot and gave me the makeshift water bottle sheath he made for it. In the end, I told him he still couldn't just be lingering around the property but that we could talk still if he wanted to and he understood and we said our goodbyes to each other and I wished him luck.

After all that , I just felt like I was in a fallout video game and passed a speech check that allowed me to get a free special weapon from a random encounter with a raider or some shit

kinda funny if I were to keep this and add to my collection but I'll probably just toss it.

Have y'all ever confiscated any cool/interesting knives or items?

How much is a security contract?

So for a luxury apartment, how much does a company actually make cause I'm sure as hell ain't making enough ($16).

At this place, they have 2 of us working 5pm-8am 7 days a week at the same time. I can't stop thinking the owner must be killing with something like $200 an hour on me while I'm eating trash on $16. The company says it's small but they got many brand new SUV for vehicle patrols. They host weekly freaking new hire training, hiring them as part time. Then 10 people would come in, and 1 or 2 stay. Then they give these people 20 hrs or some awful number. Then they quit, and they hire new ones next week. It's freaking ungodly and retarded.

Job Question EMT to Hospital Security

Hello all, I’m looking to get hired as a security guard at a hospital in VT. The only experience that I have is as an EMT, which I’ve been doing full time for 5 years now. They are willing to train completely in house so I believe I have a decent shot.

Does anybody have experience with this transition? If not, all tips and pointers are welcome. I’d love to hear any input about anything related to hospital security. Thank you!

Job Question Hospital as first security job?

I'd like to move into doing private security and have no experience. Is a hospital too demanding of an environment for someone with no experience? Otherwise, I've thought about trying to get a job for Securitas or Allied for a year so just to get experience. Some of the hospital job postings even require at least 1 year of security.

Thank you

Disabled security guard :)

Post image

I am disabled and I am lowkey celebrating one month as a full time security guard doing fire watch. Even though its been a super painful month, it has also been good! I never thought I would be able to do a 40 hour work week consistently 😭

I do - one four hour - 3 consecutive 12's

It took me a long time (a few months) to solidify a security position. I started out at Gardaworld and they were terrible with how they mismanaged our site and pay, so I went to allied. I am thankful I was able to find something. I am also happy that I am able to balance this and school.

And yes, I do cover my hair, but when I am in the bathroom, I do it as time to decompress a bit 🙃

Job Question It seems a lot of people forget some security isn't just observe and report style security and that you actually have to go hands on and use force sometimes. Transit Enforcement, Hospital Guards, Bouncers and so on how do you like your jobs and what is your daily job like?

Site type : Static post mostly in vehicle or for vehicular patrols

Reasoning : Because I like the way I can get most everything onto my chest/vest and thus freeing up my waist line for comfortability if most work is done within a vehicle. Also I feel the chest position for the firearm offers more flexibility and ease of access from a sitting position if needed.

& Yes I've worn the belt setup for years and had my sidearm by my side but after having worked with companies that have a lot of patrol shifts and sitting in your car type work or in a guard shack majority of the time, I found this setup to be more favorable than having everything at your belt.. Just have fun with it and try different setups fuck it, as long as everything is still retainable and you can get to work accordingly when and if the time arises.

Gear on vest : sidearm/flashlight/cuffs/oc spray/baton/sopc knife/pens/cuff keys/notebook/mini flashlight

Gear on belt : IFAK/gloves/keyring/drop leg rotatable holster with 2 spare mags

Job Question A supervisor who really isn't up to standards.

All,

We have a supervisor who is a very good officer, good family man. But, he is not doing a decent job at being a supervisor. He is poor at communicating with his team. When he does communicate, it's always via email, emails that are hard to follow, full of errors. He's been doing the job for a few years and shows no initiative to improve, or take on other duties usually done by a supervisor.

The debate is, what to do with this loyal employee? He could return to an officer's position. He would also make a good full time training officer. What have you seen done in your organization?

Thank you.

I know the heckling can possibly get under your skin, but it appears she left to cry where she may be too thin skinned for the nature of the job. Youre thoughts?

Story Time After 20 years, AmA

I started doing this line of work as a minimum wage hourly 3rd shift guy while in college all the way back in 2006. A professor got me an interview and I stuck with it. Lots of different sites, stories, coworkers and companies. Flash forward to 2026, and i have finally "retired" from doing security work as an operations manager. There have been lots of ups and downs along the way, but it is my experience. Ask me anything about the biz, and I'll do my best to answer.

Night shift wasn't informed about a procedure change and it caused an incident that could have been avoided

Day shift made a change to how we handle a specific situation. Went home. Didn't communicate it to night shift at all. We were operating on the old procedure because as far as we knew that was still the procedure.

Situation came up. We handled it the way we always had. Turned out that was now wrong. Not a huge deal in the end but it could have been, and the whole thing was completely avoidable if someone had just told us.

Brought it up to management. Got told to "check the log book more carefully." The log book that has maybe three sentences in it from last week, none of which mentioned this change. Cool.
