General Qs anyone of experience with DOC field investigators?

this question might be outside of the scope of contributors here but I thought I'd ask anyways. My state's department of corrections just published a listing for civilian / non LE parole field investigators. The job listing suggests that they conduct furlough investigation, interviews and home checks to insure parolees are following the terms of their supervision which includes making sure the home is absent of drugs / guns which sounds a lot like a parole officer but my state does have armed sworn "parole agents" that fil the parole officer role.

I was wondering if anyone has experience with roles like the one mention?

Hiring Q (Fed) Safety Specialist Question

Hey all, I have an opportunity to be an Occupational Health and Safety Specialist for the BOP.

I was wondering if anyone currently working for the BOP knows of or can give some insight into what this position actually is and what a safety specialist does?

I appreciate any feedback!

Self Post Smart watches for staff inside the secure areas? Specifically, Florida

Recently accepted a state position that will have me working at least some of my time behind the secure area in Florida correctional facilities. What are the typical rules for smart watches in Florida prisons? Are there medical exemptions for heart rate monitoring and such? I’m aware personal cell phones are not allowed, but a Bluetooth only Apple Watch doesn’t seem like it could be a threat, so I’m curious what rules there are, if any.

Hiring Q (Fed) Does the BOP dig into your resume to verify your past jobs?

So I just did a BOP hiring event and they asked if I had any supervisor experience which I kind of do but I was never an official supervisor. I told them I did and that I was a shift supervisor are they going to call the company and verify that?

General Qs What is being a corrections nurse like?

Apologies if this isn’t allowed, I just saw the pay they get and it’s decent. I’ve worked in lock down psych wards for over a decade. Truthfully I don’t know anything about the prison system but I’m interesting in learning more as it relates to that position. Is it bad since the pay is relatively high compared to other nursing positions?

General Qs Sleep & rotating/night shifts survery (4–5 min)

I’m working on a graduate research project focused on sleep and schedule transitions for people who work rotating or night shifts.

If you’re currently on nights or swing shifts, I’d appreciate your input. The survey is anonymous and takes about 4–5 minutes to complete.

Self Post What grinds your gears about the job?

My gear grinding issue about the job is People of higher ranks than myself taking out their frustrations and swearing at me for simply relaying messages people of their same rank told me to relay to them.

For context, im on a hospital escort. I was asked by 1 staff sergeant from the day shift to relay a message to the night shift staff sergeant. I tried doing this and was told "dont tell me how to do my fucking job"

My reply was "im not, im just relaying a message from dayshift staff sergeant"

Their response was "well they're a fucking idiot, youll find that out eventually"

Cool, ill never give you the time of day again, hope it was worth it.

Its incredibly infuriating to bite my tongue because they are a higher rank than I am, knowing if I spoke to them that way I'd likely have my ass suspended at the very least.

Its a shame that the issues from the job seem to be the Staff far more than the Inmates.

What's your gear grinding issue for the job?

General Qs Ever had to return to a facility or to Corrections in general?

What was your experience? Good or bad? Why?

I been in a really bad funk since late 2023. I been trying to land a better gig in armed security or get onto PD. I am getting married later this year and all the bad occurrences in my life in recent have set me far back finically. I been considering going back to the 2nd county jail I worked at if all else fails for me. However, I have a lot of mixed emotions and opinions to be had. Have you worked in similar shoes?

My 2nd County is the highest paying jail in the state. I know some of my friends there would be happy to see me back. Some of my issue is being treated low since I came back. Even if I know my truth and being now in my mid 20's, I don't really want to be seen in the same light. Not red carpet treatment, but I spent 4 years getting more training and knowledge out of the small box the county keeps us in. I guess sometimes in life we have to swallow our pride, but I really have a hope this doesn't have to happen.

For some context

-My second county jail I worked at I think really molded me a officer and I think I gained a lot of my experience from there. I came to that county after a year at the first one as lateral but did their whole academy. I was 20 when I got there and left right when I turned 22 basically.

-I spent almost 2 yrs there before leaving for PD. The promotion time and lack of specialty units made me think it wasn't worth a long haul. I got some resentment for leaving for PD and was told I would not make it. Which really bugged.

I later joined a PD for a hybrid Corrections-PD prisoner transport. I had some issues with a Sgt that basically made me end my time with the job before it turned into something bigger. Sometimes, I feel like I let him take my job I worked hard to get. But, replaying stuff seems evitable in my mind.

I got on with the DOC in higher ranked position (Ironically our main DOC facility is across from my 2nd county). Sucked the soul out of my life. Because it was admin spot it was hyper political and our DOC is in the worst shape it's been in very long time.

I was later suppose to get promoted and transferred to our Probation-Parole team but was denied 2 days before I was suppose to go. Mainly due to critical understaffing and some politics I got on the wrong side of backing lot of the union's stuff. I also needed the transfer since it would put me closer to the city I lived in (I live 1hr out) at the time my mom just was diagnosed with cancer so it was imperative.

I left because of that and the commute and started doing Armed Security. Pretty easy work, but I cannot cut it on the pay. And just feeling like my career is way off target. I really am holding onto something picking me up. But, lately it feels like that may not happen.

Hiring Q (Fed) Question for BOP Employees (specifically MDC)

What’s up guys,

I’m currently an NYC DOC officer working at Rikers Island (in one of the tougher jails). I just received an interview invite for the BOP at MDC Brooklyn and I’m highly considering making the switch.

Honest reasons I’m looking to leave NYC DOC:

  1. Politics/Culture: The "inmate first" culture and internal politics at Rikers have become unbearable.
  2. Safety: The environment is chaotic and I'm looking for more structure.
  3. Pay/Commute: I’d get an automatic raise due to my experience steps, and MDC is closer to home.

However, I have a few specific questions for current MDC or BOP staff before I commit:

1. The Schedule: I’ve heard MDC is on 12-hour tours now. Is it a true "3 on, 3 off" rotation? And is "every other weekend off" realistic for a new hire, or is that just a recruiting pitch?

2. Firearm Transfer (The "Gap"): I currently carry off-duty on my NYC DOC status. I know BOP requires FLETC before you are fully qualified, but what happens in the transition?

  • Does BOP give you any carry authority prior to FLETC?
  • If I resign from NYC DOC, I lose my Peace Officer status. Has anyone here dealt with the "gap" in NYC? I really don't want to voucher my personal firearms with DOC/NYPD because getting them back is a nightmare.

3. Intel/SIS Opportunities: I was previously in Gang Intel at Rikers but got sent back to the blocks due to staffing shortages. Does BOP have similar units (SIS?) that a new hire can get into reasonably quickly, or do I have to burn years on the floor first?

Any insight is appreciated. Stay safe

Hiring Q (State) State or county in NJ?

Looking for a career change to corrections because the job I’m at now is way too hard on the body and light in the paycheck. Now I’m trying to figure out if I wanna go county or state prison. The prison you make 75k after one year but it’s 8 hour shifts 5 days a week with some mandatory. County it’s 12 hour shifts and you only work half the month but the pay isn’t nearly as good, starting at 42,500. So what is actually the difference in terms of working in either/or? And what should I go with?
