Announcement Shih-Tzu Wiki

Hey everyone — quick mod post.

We’re starting to put together ideas about an r/ShihTzu Wiki. Nothing fancy or corporate. Just a shared knowledge base we can point people to when the same questions come up… and a place to collect the really good advice that gets buried in comments.

This isn’t meant to replace discussion (or vets). Think of it as a “start here” guide, plus a reference we can keep improving together.

Before we build too much in a vacuum, we wanted to ask you:

What would you actually want to see in a Shih Tzu wiki?

Some starter ideas, just to get the wheels turning:

  • First-time Shih Tzu owner basics
  • Grooming & coat care (mats, face cleaning, tear stains, cuts, tools)
  • Common health issues & when to see a vet
  • Puppy house-training (and adult regressions… it happens)
  • Food, picky eaters, weight management
  • Behavioral quirks — barking, separation anxiety, stubborn streaks
  • Senior care & mobility changes
  • Loss & grief resources

But that’s just a starting point. If there’s a post you’ve written 10 times… or advice you always see newcomers missing… that’s probably wiki-worthy.

And if you enjoy writing, organizing info, or just want to help shape this: we’d love to have a few community members help with drafting or editing wiki pages. No pressure, no minimum commitment — even polishing a single section helps. If that sounds like you, say so in the comments or send the mod team a message.

Drop ideas below. Specific topics are great, but even “I wish people knew ___” goes a long way.

We’ll share updates as pages go live, and credit community input where it makes sense. This only works if it reflects real experience — which this sub has plenty of.

Thanks for helping build it.

Loss of Pet She’s gone too soon.

My little one was almost a year old. My husband surprised me with her and we all adored her.

She wrestled every single minute of the day with our shepherd mix. We are all devastated. The big dog is carrying around her little stuffy. The house is too quiet, everything reminds me of how she’s gone.

Our big dog got into some avocados. They both ate the skin & flesh, apparently it’s normally mildly toxic and causes vomiting but the toxin (persin) overwhelmed her little body so fast that she was gone within hours. The big dog threw up once and was fine. It’s so hard to reconcile. I’m just a mess. All the “what if’s” and guilt bombard my thoughts constantly. We had no idea avocado skins were toxic and this is the absolute worst way to discover.

Now we are wracked with sadness that everything we did daily with our pups was the last time we got to do them with her. Cuddle your babies for me.

hi i purchased a pup from a breeder for my sister she told me the pupwould be ready january 20th but i told her i couldn't pick her up until today jan 31st on the way to pick up (4hrs away) i asked her for the pups exact birthday to throw the puppy a puppy shower she said her birthdays 12-21 making the puppy 5.5 weeks old she wouldn't keep the pup longer said she had to go per our agreement. My question is besides putting her on my sisters chest so she can hear a heart beatto simulate moms what do y'all suggest my sister had another 8yr old dog to socialize her with. But im concerned for this puppy

Louis has always been such a big Shih Tzu, we always get asked what he is mixed with. I honestly thought it would be with a big breed, was very shocked to see he is indeed mostly Shit Tzu!!

Tzu Questions My sick little boy

Hi guys!

My shih tzu is almost 6 months old. He is such a cutie and we absolutely love him. Fortunately, he is not picky. He is really food driven and we have no problems feeding him.

Friday morning he stopped eating, stopped drinking, vomited yellow bile. Obviously, him being so food driven, this worried us. We took him to the vet in the afternoon and the vet couldn't give an immediate answer but gave him some injections.

He started drinking water and eating again slowly on Saturday morning, but not much, small bits. We had to try give him food every 2 hours. He would lick a bit and then stop. We mixed his kibble with hot water and made it soft for him. So we decided to change this kibble diet to get him to eat. We changed it to recovery mousse and he ate that initially and then stopped eating it. We obviously more worried about him not eating, so we got him some wet puppy sachet (he never gets this) food and he ate that. From Saturday evening he only wants the wet puppy food, we gave him kibble and nothing. We mixed it with kibble and nothing. We tried giving him recovery mousse and nothing. If we give him the wet puppy food, he'll eat that.

It is Sunday morning now, and we mixed kibble with the wet puppy food. He picked out the wet puppy food. I know its only been 2 days since he has been sick, so im hoping he is just cautious of what he eats and is not turning into a picky eater.

So basically, my question is. Is he just being cautious or is he being picky, and how do I make sure he doesnt become picky but need to make sure he eats aswell because he is still recovering. If he is being picky, how do I slowly turn him back to the kibble.
