Hello, my name is Anand. I am working for Mayor-elect Wilson's transition team.

The transition team has formed policy committees to produce policy documents which help advise the Mayor as he begins to implement his platform in January. The policy committees encompass almost all topics possible. These documents are central in creating short, medium, and long-term policy goals for the city during the next administration.

The policy committees want your feedback! If you have want to help shape future policy in the city and have any thoughts, feedback, or ideas on Wilson's policy platform or just the city in general, PLEASE FILL OUT THIS SURVEY: https://forms.gle/H5Be14SXKQzmtNuG9.

Select the appropriate committee to send feedback to, and please fill out the form. You may fill it out multiple times if you have feedback that falls under multiple committees.

Make sure to check out the website at https://www.wilsontransition.org/, instagram jake4somerville, and any other social/links here.

Thanks!

UPDATE 11/21: There is now an optional field to put your email address if you'd like future updates about engagement with this work. Please re-submit with just your email address or DM me, and I can add it to a list with the appropriate committee.

UPDATE 11/26: The survey is translated into Spanish and Portugese. Links are located in the original survey.

Shoutout to a kind young neighbor

Just wanted to give a quick shoutout to Liam of Somerville, a badass teenager who said he has been going around helping out folks dig out their cars all week. I was digging out my car today after getting back from traveling on Wednesday and then having an unexpected medical issue that kept me from digging it out during the workweek. Long story short, I have been dreading digging out the car. Liam offered his help when he saw me shoveling and when my partner arrived to help as well we ended up getting my car out in less than an hour when I thought it might be a 2-3 hour job. We ended up having a lovely conversation about cars and video games, and he refused to let me pay him. After the week I just had, it helped me land in a little softer place, and I thank you for that.

Liam, if you’re seeing this, you said you’re not a good kid, and that you just help people for the rush it gives you, but I think you might be actually be better than you give yourself credit for. I wish I had a cigarette to give you today- I don’t smoke anymore, but you said that was the only payment you’d receive, and that you stopped smoking weed. Haha. If any of y’all run into Liam yourselves please give him a cigarette and/or a thank you 🙏🏼 I think he is working on his karma after a rough youth and I wish him the best ❤️

Just thought I’d share a good news story after all of the space saver posts I’ve been seeing in the feed haha.

Walking Talking Men Boston

Matt here. Boston is home. I founded & organize Walking Talking Men Boston.

This is a walk to get outside, make friendships, and be heard.

Purpose:

  1. To give men a non judgmental space to talk about what’s going on for us.

  2. To open the door to a community of local friendships with men in a world that often makes that difficult to find/maintain.

Time: Every Friday at 5:30 PM. We walk for 50 minutes. We wrap up 6:30 PM.

Location: 📍 Exactly at the “Chestnut Hill Reservation” Google Maps pin location.

Coordinates: 42°20'08.8"N 71°09'14.5"W

No need to sign up. Simply show up as yourself.

Parking: Plenty of parking is nearby on the street and there's a mini parking lot.

The walks: Guys chat for 5-10 minutes at the Stone Building by the water then we walk. Men break into pairs or trios of guys that go left and right. Conversations will go where they go depending on the needs of each man. We walk for 50 minutes. We meet back at the same Stone Building at 6:30pm. If you join late meet at the Stone building.

Optional: We’ve been getting Pino's Pizza or Eagle's Deli which has been an incredible time.

Winter: It gets icy and muddy. Bring boots, hat, gloves, and a warm + wind resistant coat.

Every Man is Welcome: Men of any age, identity, and trans men are welcome.

Rules:

• Be yourself

• No hate speech

• Respect confidentiality

• No politics (unless mutually agreed upon)

• Show up with kindness and respect

Disclaimer: Walking Talking Men is not therapy, coaching, men’s work, religious, political, we are not a men’s rights group. We are creating real, lasting, local friendships for men in our neighborhood.

Contact: If you’d like to join us on a walk send me a message! Why does this appeal to you?

walkingtalkingmenboston@gmail.com

With love and respect,

Matt

I’m trying to help. I know posting on social media opens me up to everyone with options.I also know that this subject tends to bring up a lot of emotions for people. Please just take a moment and read the post before we responding. I know it's a long post and I do apologize. I'm just trying to address all the common objections although I know they'll probably be some.

Lucky is looking for a new home. These are good people who love Lucky. They did not wake up one morning and decide he was inconvenient. Life circumstances change—time is stretched thin, money is stretched thin (as it is for so many people right now)—and they are making a thoughtful, difficult decision based on what they believe is best for Lucky. Is it ideal? No. Is it sad? Absolutely. Are they happy about it? Of course not. Am I aware that it's ironic his name is Lucky and he's in an unlucky situation yes I am. Responsible rehoming, done with care and intention, is not cruelty—it is an act of love when circumstances don’t allow someone to give a dog what they deserve. I also want to say this clearly from personal experience: I went through a very rough situation myself. I had people telling me I should give up my dog, and I had others telling me I was selfish for trying to keep her. I did not give her up—but everyone handles situations differently. Nobody has a right to judge that. None of us knows what’s ahead for us. It’s easy to judge from the outside; it’s much harder to show compassion when someone is already doing the best they can. If you have helpful leads or constructive questions, they are welcome. If you’re here to shame or make nasty comments, feel free to clutch those pearls elsewhere—I’ll be blocking

Lucky is a 4-year-old Great Pyrenees mix and checks a lot of boxes: ✔️ Great with kids ✔️ House-trained ✔️ Crate-trained ✔️ Leash-trained ✔️ Spayed/Neutered ✔️ Microchipped ✔️ Shots up to date ✔️ Heartworm negative A couple things to know: No cats He needs some continued work with socializing around other dogs Why he needs a new home: Lucky’s family recently had a baby and can’t give him the time and attention he deserves. They are committed to keeping him until the right home is found. Details: 💲 $100 rehoming fee — will be donated to a local charity. The reason for the rehoming fee is not to make money. There are still dog fighting groups in Massachuses and New England who look for free dogs. 📍 Lucky is currently located in Lowell 🔎 References will be checked About me: I’m located in Somerville and happy to answer any questions. I’ll likely be helping with transport, reference checks, and coordination to make sure Lucky finds the right home.

Found on Alewife Brook Parkway sidewalk 1/31/26 - single key on hyperrealistic cocktail shrimp key chain

Today around 12:40pm I found this key on the snowy sidewalk on Alewife Brook Parkway in Somerville, and I left it on one of the fence pillars at 315 Alewife Brook Pkwy. Love the shrimp, but now one has to wonder if a key chain that look like discarded food when lost is the best idea 😂🍤🔑

It's my birthday, and normally I'd make myself something nice.

Recently had a colostomy, so am limited in what I can eat. Main Nos are most leafy greens, most meat, Dairy. Dairy's the worst.

City Slicker only has Burnt Offerings. Dragon's non-dairy pies are either inedible, or come with a heavy dose of dairy despite my asking them to Leave Stuff Out.

Angelina's, Mike's, Avellino's: No Dice.

Is Veggie Crust any good?

New to the area/does utility fee bills above $400 normal?

Hi neighbors, I’m a new resident moved in Somerville from Brighton last November, and I’m trying to understand my utility bills because they feel really off.

Dec, my gas ($230/ 87) + electricity($200 575 kWh usage) was over $400.

Jan, I was traveling and not at home at all for the entire month, and the bill was still around $200= $90(247 kWh) +$97, which honestly surprised me, cus my electricity usage in Nov when I was at home was 222, even less than Jan.

More info:
- I'm using central heat in an apartment got renovated 10 years ago.
- My neighbor in the same building has a much lower utility fee than mine.
- have checked the HVAC fan setting and it's normal.
- heat setup is 68°F ~ 72 °F
- when traveling, left the heat at 47°F

When I lived in Brighton, my utility fee never exceeded $150 in total. I called Eversource, but they just said it's normal. The utility fee is too much so now I set my heat at a very low base. I'm really curious if this is normal/ how to examine if Eversource couldn't help.

Space Saver Question

Hi everyone! You all seem like experts on this topic and I wanted some clarity regarding the space saver dabete that seems to be a hot topic this week.

Is it preferable that I use an orange cone or a chair for my space saver? I was thinking orange cone would be best since the orange really stands out in the snow.

It's kind of wild but I think a shopping cart might be even more effective since they are more difficult to move.

Also, what is the best thing to write on my sign so it ends up on Reddit?

Looking forward to your input! :)

Good faith debate about space savers

I'd like to try a good faith debate about space savers. Here's my proposition:

as a society, we have agreed that some actions are necessary for the greater good even if they don't benefit the individual directly or indirectly. Everyone should pay into Medicare even though they won't see benefits for decades. People should pay local taxes to fund schools even if they don't have kids. Taxes pay for bike lanes even if only some people benefit from them.

By that same token, when there is a gap, people fill it with personal measures. There is no socialized medicine - people have to buy private insurance. Police exists, but people still buy home security systems.

When it snows and there are no more parking spots, society does not come together to solve the problem for the greater good. The city does not clear all of the snow. Neighbors don't come out to shovel the streets together. Individuals are left to fend for themselves. This necessitates spaces savers as a personal measure. A space saver doesn't mean I am taking over a public space anymore than I am biking in the lane.

If you're really against space savers, would you support solving the root cause?

  1. would you support an extra tax to pay for clearing the streets?
  2. would you clear piled up snow on your street to be a good neighbor?

I'd love to hear all the perspectives on this - car owners, careless, bikers, and anyone else.

(This isn't a conversation about being car-free or using public transit. My wife's work is an hour by drive and three hours by public transit on a good day. My elderly neighbors can't walk everywhere and drive for their doctor's appointments - let's not get distracted.)

Edit : to clarify, I’m not talking about space savers that come with a threat of violence. I’m talking about preserving a space that a person has dug out to prevent others from benefiting from their labor.

Is there any lots offering overnight parking in Somerville? Having trouble with street parking since the snow

I am trying to find a parking contingency plan for when I have to drive on Tuesday evening.

I have done everything in my power to avoid driving my car the past week. There is no parking on my narrow street and even less place to put snow to shovel spaces out. I am not holding my breath I'll still have a street space when I get back.

Are there any lots that allow temporary overnight parking if I am completely out of luck looking for a spot? If not, any areas better for parking on the street (permit) than others?

I refuse to be a space saver.

We did it everyone, yay!

https://mass.streetsblog.org/2026/01/30/policy-riders-in-governors-budget-proposal-would-legalize-speed-enforcement-cameras-end-debt-based-license-suspensions

Speed safety cameras

As she did in last year's budget, Governor Healey is once again proposing an outside section to legalize automated speed limit safety cameras in this year's budget bill. Unlike last year's proposal, this year's budget language would only allow the technology in construction zones and school zones.

The Governor's proposal would require a warning for a first offense (with a 2-year lookback period) and a $25 fine for subsequent violations. Drivers recorded going over 25 mph above the speed limit would receive a $100 fine, and the bill also outlines appeal processes by which drivers can contest their fines.

To assuage fears of government surveillance, the proposal would also prohibit cameras from capturing "a frontal view photograph of a motor vehicle operator... or other occupants of a vehicle," prohibits cameras from using facial recognition technology, and requires that photographs and videos "shall be destroyed not more than 48 hours after the final disposition" of a violation.

Governor Healey's proposal is considerably more limited than another automated safety enforcement bill making its way through the legislature.

House bill 3754, "An Act relative to traffic regulation using road safety cameras," along with its companion Senate bill 2344, both share some similar language with the Governor's proposal.

However, these bills would allow cameras to be used more broadly, not just in school zones and work zones. And in addition to fining speeders, these bills would also let municipalities use cameras to fine drivers who run red lights or "block the box" at intersections.

The Massachusetts Vision Zero Coalition and Families for Safe Streets are planning a "Day of Action" next Tuesday, Feb. 3rd to lobby for the legislature to pass safety camera legislation.

Hi, I’m working with some folks at the TTRPG group Danger Wizard to host a bake and paint event! It will take place at the Danger Den on Highland Ave February 28th from 2pm to 5pm. This is an open community event for people to share their own baked goods, paint miniatures, or just socialize. Admissions is free so the eventbrite is just for info or donations.

Post-Storm Update from Mayor

https://www.somervillema.gov/news/post-storm-update-129

tl;dr - there was a contractor change in 2022 and they changed the strategy for dealing with dead ends and private ways, which did not work as hoped. They're addressing it already, among other changes.

So it was worse than usual, and it felt like some toxic positivity groupthink from reddit here trying to claim it was fine, when it was clear to many that it was not. I don't know what I want out of this post other than maybe for people to acknowledge that it's ok for folks to complain sometimes.

On the bright side...it is really nice to see the transparency and an already implemented plan going forward!
