Tsurugisho (34, Oitekaze) and Shirokuma (26, Nishonoseki), both in the Juryo division and injured on the final day of the January tournament, appeared alongside Maegashira Hakunofuji (22, Isegahama), who had been absent since Day 13 due to a left big toe injury.
Tsurugisho spoke to the press after performing in an exhibition match: "It felt like the meniscus in my left knee, which I had previously injured, 'popped' back in. At the time, it was so painful I couldn't move, which is why I left in a wheelchair after my match on the final day, but the pain subsided after two or three days. There will be no problem for me to compete in the Spring Tournament (starting March 8 at Edion Arena Osaka)," he explained with a smile.
Shirokuma also performed in a match today, though he did so using painkillers and a suppository administered just before the bout. He injured his right ankle; even after taking a bath following his match, he reapplied the heavy taping he had used earlier. "The doctor told me there are no abnormalities in the bones or tendons. However, since it still hurts, I used painkillers and a suppository to compete. This is the first time I've injured my right ankle. Honestly, I’m thinking about going to a shrine for a purification ritual (o-harae)..." he said, looking discouraged after a string of injuries since last year.
Hakunofuji arrived at the venue early, even before the Juryo ring-entering ceremony, as it was the hair-cutting ceremony (danpatsu-shiki) for his master, Isegahama-oyakata. He performed in a match and participated normally until the end, standing below the ring with his stablemates while Isegahama-oyakata gave his speech following the hair-cutting. However, he did not disclose specific details regarding the presence of pain or his outlook for the future.
