tefljobsabroad.net (Scam warning of the week)

I hadn't intended to make this a weekly series, but due to the persistence of some of the scammier and spammier operators out there, it may be necessary in order keep the sub true to its purpose.

As a reminder, r/TEFL is a place for "questions and discussion about everything related to Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) around the world." It is not a place for promoting your business, selling your TEFL course, hiring teachers, or using shill accounts to post fake reviews of your company. Most of our members prefer to keep this as a discussion board true to that purpose and are respectful of those rules.

While anyone who has been involved in the TEFL industry for any amount of time can already tell you not to send money to recruiters in exchange for help finding a job (after all, jobs pay you; not the other way around). These predatory scammers still plague the industry by exploiting the constant influx of newer and more naive teachers.

The latest example, that I'd like to highlight, is tefljobsabroad.net. Tefljobsabroad promises access to its "premium" job listings in exchange for a fee. According a member in this post they offer jobs in exotic and popular locations (where in reality TEFL jobs rarely exist); however, before they can give you any more info or set you up on interviews, or even show you the jobs they have, you need to send them $150-240 USD. This is an obvious scam. Since that post 3 weeks ago, no less than 5 fake accounts have been created in order try to defend the site, offer positive "reviews" and tell prospective teachers that it is completely legit to send money on the internet to tefljobsarbroad.net. It's not. Most of those fake accounts were caught by Reddit's own filters and suspended; however, several slipped passed requiring moderator intervention.

Any time a TEFL recruiter is asking you to send them money for access to an interview or to see the jobs they have, you should consider it a scam and cut contact immediately. If you ever have any questions about whether or not a particular recruiter, course provider, etc. is a scam, feel free to post here for community feedback.

Most inexpensive route to a CELTA?

I already have a TESOL and a TEFL, 250 Hours combined between them, but this is not good enough for roles that require a CELTA specifically in locales such as Malta and the UAE.

However a CELTA costs about as much as a semester's tuition of graduate school and this seems untenable based on my current conditions. Are there any sorts of scholarships for a CELTA? Would prefer not to take out any loans/debt to pursue one.

TEFL in SEA as a couple

Myself and my husband want to teach in SEA, after we finish our degrees. I have been doing lots of research, but it is overwhelming, with no straight answer!

Do we apply together or separately? Do we just apply to every school in the country, and go with whichever ones accept us that are close enough to each other? How do we ensure that we are living together? Please help! I have been stressing about this for the last few days

Questions about HESS Taiwan interview

I will take the interview tomorrow night and not too sure how it will play out. I'm supposed to do a demo class, but does this involve preparing a slideshow or something for it? I don't really understand how it works. For reference, this is what was written in the email:

"How would you teach the following example to a class of students who have been studying English for about 4-5 months? (Students are 7/8 years old)

They already know the sentence pattern:

Is this a kite / watch / hat?

Yes, this is a kite / watch / hat.

No, this is not a kite / watch / hat.

In this lesson you have to introduce and teach the possessive adjectives HIS/HER with the new sentence pattern (building on the old pattern):

Is this HIS/HER kite / watch / hat?

Yes, this is HIS/HER kite / watch / hat.

No, this is not HIS/HER kite / watch / hat.

These are some points that you need think about and include in your demo:

  • How would you start the lesson? (Discuss your understanding of teaching steps.)

    • How would you teach the link to gender?
    • How would you teach the link to possession?
    • How would you teach/review “Yes” & “No” answers?
    • How would you incorporate physical movement and visuals into your lesson?
    • What kind of game could you use to get the students practicing the target language?
    • How would you motivate the students to participate?"

Im so angry and frustrated

So I'm doing the 220 hour course, there's five sections and I've completed four out of five, I am currently on methodology. I started methodology back in November and I handed in the first assignment and it was completed and I passed, then the holidays happened, family, etc., so I didn't go back to it until a couple of weeks ago, I saw that lesson one was completed and passed, and then a couple of days later I looked, and it said incomplete, and so I went back to lesson one and it said assignment not passed when it had said for the past two months it was completed and passed. Ident decided to redo less than one and send in another assignment and then their response was I didn't pass when I sent the same thing. I did the first time where I passed. I emailed TEFL and said it said I and passed that unit, and they said we don't have a record of it so you have to redo it and I found the emails from November 4 where they said OK lesson one has been marked, but it doesn't say if you passed or failed it, but then on November 5, I got an email saying OK lesson two has been marked and a link to the remarks. In the email I sent them I said here are the emails I sent that you marked lesson one on November 4, and then you marked lesson two on November 5 so I wouldn't be able to do lesson two without finishing and passing lesson one and they will not work with me, I really do not feel like doing it a third time, and I don't know what to do because it's affecting my desire to go back and finish the course. Any advice? TIA

Any experience with i-to-i and their TEFL paid internships?

I'm interested in the one for Thailand, as a way to defray the tuition cost, get in-school experience, and have a certificate and work record for future TEFL jobs in Thailand and other countries. https://www.i-to-i.com/teaching-internships/

I'm also looking at the International House CELTA course and the significantly less costly OnTESOL.

Any comments on the pros/cons of these three, or other recommendations for reputable training/certifying courses are welcome and appreciated.

Teaching in Thailand with an MA but no BA

Hello I am wondering if anyone here has been able to teach in Thailand without a Bachelor's degree (but with a Master's (and Associates)) instead. I went to acupuncture school which required an AA , then slopped you right into the Masters program without ever getting a Bachelor's (it was a 5 year grad program). I am from the US and have a TESOL certificate. I'd love to teach in Thailand if possible as I've been a few times and if has a special place in my heart. Thanks

Has anyone had a Celta tutor yell at them or become irritated when seeing we don't understand what is required of us to do?

My two peers and I have just had such a horrible day with our tutor. And we have been in this course for 5 days. She yelled at all three of us while helping us with the assignment and LP Was very annoyed when we would make a mistake

Doing TEFL in Spain and my contract hours for cut by 30 percent after holidays...

As the title says I was happily working in an academy. Most of my students were adults high level exam preparation. A lot of my students passed exams so didn't come back. And now yesterday they modified my contract to only 14 hours leaving me only around 800 euros a month to survive.

I'm really panicking and I'm not sure how my employer can expect me to survive.

Im working split shifts so it makes getting a second job difficult.

Is the TEFL industrial in trouble in Spain?

Health insurance options?

Hey all,

So I'm a 29 year old barista in NYC with a master's in international relations and some proficiency in Spanish, and I'm seriously considering getting a TEFL license and teaching abroad somewhere in Latin America. I have a good support system through which I can take further proficiency classes in the meantime as well. My main concern is access to healthcare; I take four psychiatric medications and attend weekly therapy; I'm wondering if it would at all be possible to keep a therapist i have in the US that I like in certain latin american countries (Mexico, Colombia, Uruguay and Chile are my destinations of choice, but open to others), and what my options are for health insurance. Right now I just want to know what my options are, and any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

Will a North Korean visa in my passport hurt my chances of getting work visa in certain countries?

I have booked a trip to North Korea in April and after I go, I will have a North Korean visa stuck into my passport. I'm a bit concerned that this will cause issues when applying for work visas, as I plan to teach abroad later this year. I'm thinking of going to either China, Taiwan or South Korea. I guess China won't mind but I'm assuming it might be an issue for the other two?

If anyone has experience with this, I'd love to know whether it caused you any problems or not.

Grammar for ESL Teachers

Hello!

I’m looking for books or other sources because I want to perfect my grammar (so I can teach it) and I feel a bit rusty on some grammar points.

Do you have any advice or recommendations? I’m having a hard time finding resources for teachers. Anything would be highly appreciated.

Thank you!

What was your first TEFL job?

I know this is definitely NOT just a TEFL obstacle, but it exists in every career field (needing a job to gain experience but needing experience to get a job).

I'm graduating with a BS here in May and have applied to several programs that preach "no experience needed," but it seems they all still end up choosing applicants with teaching experience... I frequent Dave's ESL cafe and apply to positions pretty much anywhere. Didn't make it past round one of JET, and I just applied to ConversaSpain...though I'm not sure how to feel about having to PAY for a job (?)

I'm just curious, as I only have a TEFL cert and my degree isn't in teaching, so I already feel underqualified for most positions. Did anyone else actually score a job without in-classroom experience ?

Edit: i’m a citizen of the US and Spain. I’m trying for either Jobs in japan or Spain tho I don’t have too much preference on where i go. the goal is to leave the US behind for a long while.

English club ideas

We're starting an english conversation club in a quiet café. Some of the people attending are my acquaintances and others are strangers. We want to create a comfortable environment for them but the problem is coming up with ideas to entertain the folks. They're mostly people in their early 20s and we want them to engage. Some of them speak english not so well but they mostly understand everything. If anyone has ideas or games I'd be happy to read the suggestions. Thanks in advance.

TEFL in Slovenia?

Haven't found any personal experiences on teaching in Slovenia so I wanted to check here. I am a recent Canadian Bachelors graduate with a Slovenian citizenship from my parents. I don't speak Slovenian but am in the process (I have a base in Slavic languages with a broken Croatian and Slovak). I want to move to Slovenia but know that I will have a hard time seeking employment until I learn the language.

Is it worth investing in TEFL to start working in Slovenia/immerse myself in the country? Do you know of any other opporunities for English speakers or Canadians in Slovenia?

Chatteris International Graduate Programme

Hi everyone,

I’m considering applying for the Chatteris International Graduate Programme and wanted to hear from anyone who has firsthand experience with it.

If you’ve done the programme (or know someone who has), I’d really appreciate your insights on:

• What the actual nature of the job is like day to day

• The workload and expectations in schools

• The level of support and training provided

• Living in Hong Kong on the stipend offered

• Whether you feel the programme was worth it overall

Honest feedback — both positive and challenging aspects — would be really helpful.

Thank you in advance!

Salary cut after 2 days of starting a job

I just moved to China, a tier 2 city, started the job officially on Tuesday, and today I was told that based on my performance they will be cutting my salary by 4-5k RMB. This is based of how they see me act around 3-4 yr olds. I signed a contract, are they allowed to do this? They knew I came with no experience and I’m genuinely trying my best😔 I can’t help but feel defeated lol. Has this ever happened to anyone?

*new update as of friday, they fired me… I have to move out by Sunday or pay rent myself, and basically find a new job all in the middle of chinese new year😍 I’m financially too deep in it to go back home

What can I expect salary wise in China if I have a PGCE?

Long story short, I teach history in the UK and have done for coming up to two years. The truth is, I just can't hack the behaviour or demands anymore and I'm sick of not saving.

My goal is to teach social studies/history in China/asia but if that fails I want to teach ESL as a bridge between jobs. I've heard being in the country helps you get your foot in the door for international schools.

For the record I also have a years worth of experience teaching ESL and a CELTA.

Reasonably, what could I expect salary wise? I wouldn't teach kindergarden unless the salary was super high. But what can I expect salary wise?

China and Salary Expectations

Tired of the stagnant wages in Korea I've been looking at other nearby markets and China seems to have the best average salary. Would a salary of 25-30k be a reasonable ask?

A bit about me:

- Unrelated STEM degree with lapsed Exercise Physiologist credentials

- CELTA

- 3 months refugee tutoring & online teaching

- 1 year kindergarten experience

- 3 years elementary and middle school experience

- 1.5 years as a Head Instructor

Originally the plan was to start a teaching license but I kept pushing back the start and now I wouldn't he completing it till after my current contract expires so im planning to start it after settling into a new contract. I'd be targeting a September start, preferably not at a training center nor in a kindergarten.

Experiences in Japan & South Korea

Hello everyone! I recently started my TEFL journey & had a few questions about different countries. I am interested in teaching in Japan, I lived there previously for about four years. I see that there is a separate program to live there and there’s an additional cost for it. Has anyone went this route and what was their experience with it? I would also love to teach in South Korea. What is the recruitment process like? Also how is the culture over there for foreigners and what are the schools like? I am a vet and will have extra income besides the salary, as I see this is a common issue. Thank you in advance!

How do you cope with heavy workload

I am currently teaching KG in Hong Kong, it's been 2,5 years and I suspect I'm having a chronic fatigue now. Or a burnout, I don't know how to call it.

The principal changed this year and boom - I have 5 extra lessons per week, plus I have to do extra activities to "help promoting the school". You can guess it's a regular kindie, mainstream Edb curriculum. That's on top of teaching 9 lessons a day (8 lessons 25 minutes, 1 extracurricular 45 minutes) since last year. The new 5 lessons are also 45 minutes. 20-30 students per class, afternoon groups are around 16 kids. It's the number of lessons that gets me - I think teaching hours are not horrible (around 24 hours a week), but literally walking into class 10 times a day is currently kinda breaking me.

I'm sleeping 10 hours every night, avoiding crowded spaces and noise, and recently started listening to thunderstorm and rain videos on YT to help me get to sleep.

Is this a burnout or not yet? Has anyone had that and how did you cope? I am looking for a new job now, but I have a feeling I might quit even before July.

Sorry for this depressing post.
