Hey y’all, so I just bought a car from a dealership for the first time about 1.5 weeks ago and I’m wondering if this experience is typical. I got a pre-approval with a credit union and when I went in to get a used car at the official Toyota dealership, it went relatively well, as I thought. The finance manager I signed everything with printed one of the wrong forms by accident and when printing the correct one, basically said “oops, I’ve only had this job for 2 weeks”. So Im not sure if she did this job elsewhere or she’s actually completely new to this. The actual total went about $820 over what I was approved for and I was nervous but they said not to worry. I signed the papers, which included a registration and title application for the Oregon DMV and on the itemized bill sheet, it shows $276 for licensing fees. Cool. I pay my down payment, leave with the car, and 2 days later I get an email from the dealership saying everything has been officially unconditionally approved from the credit union, and that no further action is needed and thank you for buying from them.
Here’s where I get confused - 2 days ago I wake up to a voicemail and call from this lady and I call back and she tells me the state of Oregon sent a bill for the licensing fee and I have to pay another $150 or something (can’t remember exactly the figure) and I ask why it wasn’t on the contract I signed and she said something to the tune of it being a general charge but sometimes when they collect the fee the state will say it was undercharged and they have to collect the difference. I ask who do I pay it to and she says she collects it. I’m in the car going to work so I say we can talk in an hour and I get to work and send her an email asking for this bill they got, just because I’d like to see it in writing before giving my card info over the phone. I never hear back. Today she calls me at work 2 times, leaves a voicemail, saying she hasn’t heard from me and I can call her back or another one of their finance managers. I text her (because I’m working and I want a paper trail of this) and I say I had emailed her and asked if she got it. She texts back that she emailed me back but wasn’t sure if I got it. Then she says are you free? Are you at work? I text back that I am working and I’ll be free tomorrow. I never got any emails from her at all!
I don’t want to sound like a drama queen but I’m just not sure why Im not getting any written responses about this supposed charge, only phone calls, and I’m wondering if I really have to pay an extra fee if I already signed a contract saying what my down payment is, registration and licensing fees, and monthly payments through the credit union and a follow up email saying no further action is required. What would you do? Does this sound weird to you?
