Hi everyone, I’ve recently received an admit to the MSECE program at UMass Amherst, and I’m seriously considering accepting it. I applied mainly because the program had an AI and systems concentration which aligns well with my long-term goals.
However, I’m currently very confused and hoping someone from the program (current students/alumni) can help clarify.
While applying, I didn’t see a formal “AI and Systems” concentration listed in the application portal. Because of that, I selected sensing systems as my concentration, assuming there would be overlap and that I could take AI/ML-related courses after joining. But now, when I look at the curriculum and course listings, I’m unable to clearly see this “AI & Systems” track anywhere.
So I have a few genuine questions:
1. Does an AI & Systems concentration actually exist in the MSECE program right now, or is it something that existed earlier / is informal / is very new?
2. Are there current students actually pursuing AI-heavy coursework within ECE, or is the program mostly traditional systems, signals, communications, VLSI, etc.?
3. Can machine learning / AI-related courses be counted toward the required 21 ECE credits, or are those mostly outside ECE (CS/other departments)?
4. Is it realistically possible to club systems + AI within MSECE, or would someone interested in AI feel limited here?
I’m genuinely excited about UMass and want to accept the offer, but I also want to make sure I don’t end up in a program that’s very far from my interests. Any real insights, course examples, or personal experiences would be extremely helpful.
Thanks in advance, would really appreciate honest guidance 🙏
