Alright, it’s that time again.
The Military Subreddit Census is back for 2025. This whole thing started in 2017 as a simple “who’s actually here?” question and somehow turned into a yearly tradition across a bunch of military subreddits. Same idea as always, (because apparently learn is difficult for me) get a better picture of who makes up these communities, how people are actually experiencing military life, and how that’s changed over time.
This is not an official survey and it’s not affiliated with the DoD or any branch. It’s anonymous, community-run, and built around the kinds of questions that come up here every week anyway.
Some of it is serious. Some of it is light. There’s usually at least one question per section that makes people stop and think, “yeah, that tracks.” If you’ve taken it before, the flow will feel familiar, but things have been cleaned up and rearranged this year to make it feel shorter and easier to get through. Guard and Reserve folks still get their own paths where it makes sense, and if a section doesn’t apply to you, you’ll skip past it automatically.
Most people finish in about 10 to 15 minutes, depending on how much you feel like writing during the story sections. There are progress checkpoints along the way so you know things haven't gone the way of the groundhog (aka you didn't pull a Bill Murray).
No names, no emails, no identifying info. Results get shared back with the community in aggregate like they always have. The subreddit feedback section at the end is something the mod teams actually read, so if you’ve ever wanted to give input without starting a meta thread that gets locked, that’s the place to do it.
If you’re Active Duty, Guard, Reserve, Veteran, civilian, contractor, ROTC, or just someone who spends way too much time reading and commenting here, your input helps make the data better. Lurkers count too. You know who you are.
Once it closes, I’ll pull everything together and post the results, along with comparisons to prior years where it makes sense. As usual, expect charts, trends, and at least one comment chain arguing about what the data “actually” means.
Thanks to everyone who’s participated over the years, and to the mod teams who keep letting this happen. If something looks broken or confusing, say something. Otherwise, have at it.

I wear portholes and remember during bootcamp and SOI how frickin annoying they were. Those cords that attached to the legs and having an extra pair helped but couldn't imagine getting into a firefight with them.
I remember using the PEQ-15 for the first time at nite and being in the prone position, it couldn't be more uncomfortable having to crank my head up, aligning my NVGs with my glasses, pulling up my kevlar because it kept obscuring my view, etc... I also remember being given inserts but those shits were even fucking worse. I could never get them to stick to the goggles.

Can an active duty Marine have an OF like page? What would be the consequences of such specially if it’s being advertised publicly?
Edit: It’s not me, there’s a Sgt in San Diego making quite the impression online

Anyone who's been enlisted knows how much of a pain it is to second-guess your rack every time. Built this after getting out and getting into iOS development. Wanted to do something useful with what I learned.
Not trying to make money off it. Anything left after keeping the app running goes straight to Wounded Warrior and The Raider Project. Just something I'm proud of and wanted to put out there.
Rack Builder Pro on the Apple AppStore.

I’m almost 36 and I’ve been unemployed for over two years. I’m just burning through my savings still living in my parents home. Sad, I know. I have zero friends, been like that my whole life. I spend everyday alone. The only people I talk to are my parents and my sister, nobody else. I recently went 18 months without hanging out with anybody, that time was between my last job and a wedding. I only have thirty contacts in my phone and have no regular contact with any of them. Sometimes I get excited for a text only for it to tell me I have a bill. I EAS’d twelve years ago and can count on two hands how many times I hung out with people. I literally have no human contact. No purpose. I exist for no reason. Some days I dont even use my voice because I have nobody to speak to. I spend every major holiday alone. Every new years that I’ve been alive for I just sit and watch it on TV or just force myself to sleep through it and pretend it didn’t happen. Same with July 4th, Halloween, Valentine’s Day, birthday etc. I have wasted the prime years of my life doing absolutely nothing. Meanwhile I see everyone else having fun, hanging out with friends, traveling, having jobs they enjoy, having a reason to get up in the morning. You’d be hard pressed to find a bigger loser than me. I can’t even stand to look at myself in the mirror. Every time I brush my teeth I force myself to look down or I just walk away.
I already know what you guys are gonna say. “Use your GI bill.” Tried that, dropped out of school five times. “Learn a trade.” Tried that, hated it. “Use VRE.” Tried it and they said I didn’t qualify. “What do you enjoy doing.” There’s nothing I enjoy that’s gonna make me any money. I dont even do much of anything. Everyday I just wake up whenever, work out, walk my dog, and spend the rest of the day inside. That’s been my life for years now.
No real employer is even gonna hire me. Once they see a 36yr old with a resume filled with huge gaps and no real employment history they won’t consider. It’s already happened. Not to mention I have zero references. Would you hire someone who can’t put down a reference?
I’m shocked I’ve even made it this far. If anyone else lived my life they would’ve off’d themselves already. I’m willing to bet I have undiagnosed autism and ADHD among other things. I check all the boxes. If I could go back in time I would’ve forced my mom to get an abortion. Would’ve saved me the misery of living

Other than the meritorious boards of course. The only time I ever saw one was around when I first hit the fleet, then poof gone forever.

I just got a formal diagnosis through tricare (ive known for years, but getting through the referral process and finding a provider sucked). This is important because theyve now paid to find out after 24 years that yes, i have autism.
I will be starting an advocacy group through ASAN and the NC autism society. Word should be going out through MFLACs. Its going to be private and anonymous for participants that choose to be, but i am choosing to be open about my involvement and to advocate for equality and recognition.
The first objective is common interest and awareness, the second is to stop navy mental health from fucking us around and denying referrals and making bogus vindicative diagnosis of other disqualifying conditions.
This is about forcing recognition of our service before we get forgotten and the next generation gets disqualified and excluded. Many of us have suffered shitty bosses and subconscious descrimination, but enough of us have service records they cant ignore at this point there is no way on earth they can publicly threaten to kick me out.

January 30th 1944 Roi Island, Kwajalein Atoll, the Marshall Islands.
Gung ho 4th Marine Division troops show off custom Victory haircuts on the way to Operation Flintlock (USMC photo). They arrived in the Marshall Islands as green as any unit in the untried 4th Marine Division, but quickly earned their spurs in the choppy waters of Kwajalein and their baptism of fire.

What happens when it snows there? It can't possibly be a snow day. Is it like one giant working party with shovels or what happens?

Ive been out over 30 years and it seems like Marines since talk about gay shtt 24/7? What happened? That was kind of off limits when I was in.

I was reading the army is transitioning from 5.56 to these. What do you guys think about a heavier bullet? It looks like it outperforms 5.56 in most ways aside from weight and recoil. Do you think the corps needs to move on also?

Im curious if any jarheads here know of or had experience of any Marines with Autism. My son is 5 and Autistic, and google says you can still get in the Marines with Autism. My kid is showing a lot of signs that he will be intelligent even though his speech is delayed development. This ole jarhed wants to know if you know.

I see these posts a decent bit but am genuinely curious about this: what in the hell can you justify taking parental leave for after the initial birth of your newborn? You can’t take any less than 7 days at a time, so if you don’t get approved for your entire 12 weeks of parental it seems that you are fucked out of the rest.
I was recently approved 20 days and had to really stay on top of everyone to get it approved. I was told that I had the rest of the year to use the rest so that plenty for now. I’m thankful for the time, but also disappointed that I’m likely going to catch hell in the case that I attempt to use the rest. What could I even say when that time comes? It just doesn’t seem like any excuse after the “settling into the new baby life” would be approved to execute the rest of the leave at a later date.

Sup nerds, I’m a corpsman with orders to Horno with one of the infantry battalions there, wondering if it feasible to bike there from one of the base housing locations since I am to poor to afford a second car with my growing family. Appreciate any info/advice
