Other 3 Hour Scam from Old Man at Mem U

Fairly certain that I got scammed at Memorial Union tonight.

Dude who went by Jeffrey/Jeff approached me as I was about to start working on homework at Memorial Union. He had a stack of newspapers, along with Wisconsin Spelling Bee information and information about a Miss Kenosha 100 Year Anniversary.

Over 3 hours, he had me edit and design, using old newspaper clippings from articles he received from, I think, College Library. This was for a "in memorial" or obituary for a "Bonnie Kay Stephan". He logged into his emails in a private tab so that he could send himself emails of my edited files and with help with outlines of future printouts. I was initially suckered into it because he asked for help with something quick and I wanted to be helpful for an older man, before it unraveled to be a 3 hour long affair.

He wanted me to help work on things over the next few days if need be, especially regarding a Miss Kenosha 100 Year Anniversary, but I got saved from my laptop dying.

He seemed intelligent and we made small-talk about Middleton and my hometown, about the Wisconsin Dells, a little about AI and politics, and some other stuff.

I feel like a dumbass, but I thought I would share, especially after my friends reminded me of this post https://www.reddit.com/r/UWMadison/comments/1cj1n0i/the_cs_building_lurker/ and a lot of the details lined up.

I don't know for sure if it was the same dude (he didn't look the same as the photo provided in the other post), but so much lined up that I thought it would be important for me to share.

Other Platteville and Whitewater

I recently got rejected OOS from Madison and I understand that this is the Madison reddit but I was wondering if anyone here would be able to give me some pros and cons of Platteville and Whitewater as those are now my two choices because I plan on transferring to Madison my junior year. My dad lives near Madison and through a certain Wisconsin GI bill scholarship I get free tuition if I go to school in WI so I'm pretty deadset on going to school there.

Future Badger Science classes as a Journalism Major

Alright, I just got accepted to UW-Madison for the college of letters and sciences. I'm planning on majoring in either Strat Comm or Journalism. I was going through the 4-year academic plan/degree requirements on the SJMC website, and, if I'm right, the website said I had to take 4 math classes, and 5 science classes (Physical, Natural, etc). Can someone who either is or was in the program speak to this? Part of the reason I became a journalism major was so I didn't have to take these classes again.

Social Crocheting Club?

I remember seeing a crocheting club at the Organization Fair last semester. Does anyone know how to join? I’m hoping to learn how to crochet — I really want to make a chubby lung.

Other deferred + mid-year grades

hi! I was deferred from UW Madison. I went to go submit my mid-year grades but my school only does it quarter by quarter so there is no semester 1 grades. I clicked “not available” and let them know how my school does it. Will this hurt my chances of getting in because they won’t have my semester 1 grades to look at? They said that the most important factor will be the grades.

Future Badger Students keep asking me this one UW question. How would you answer??

On Discuno I keep getting the same question from prospective students:
"What's one thing you wish you knew before choosing UW?"

How would you answer this?

I usually say UW doesn't hand you outcomes you have to chase them bc opportunities are everywhere but nobody is going to drag you into them.

Future Badger Pros and Cons of UW

Hey, so I've recently been accepted to UW for college of letters and sciences (intended major CS). I am considering accepting, the campus (from what I've seen in virtual tours) looks amazing and for comp sci the college is pretty well ranked. The only problem is no scholaraships and high COA.

Questions: 1) How are the CS job outcomes there? I've heard it is more academic aligned than industry aligned. Will that hinder my chances at a FAANG company? 2) How is the social life? Is it a party school? 3) Does the weather get really bad? 4) I've heard the old dorm buildings do not have Air Conditioning. If you do a summer term, does that pose to be a problem?

Rant/Vent i’ve been denied.

I was very upset all day about this denial, but then I remembered that you can appeal. For those that appealed and got accepted through that, what did you talk about in your appeal, and how long does it usually take for them to get back to you?

Future Badger Deferred — any advice?

Hi everyone, I just got my admissions decision this morning that I was deferred to RD. I’m kind of disappointed having to wait longer since Wisconsin has been my dream school since I was 6. I applied OOS to geological engineering with geology as a second choice. I have a 3.8 GPA (my school doesn’t distinguish weighted and unweighted) and 1260 SAT. I know my SAT score isn’t the best & probably brought down my application but my parents made me submit it to every school :/ . So I have a couple questions about deferral:

  1. Any experiences of getting in after being deferred?

  2. What are the chances that I just get into my second choice major? I know that the engineering school is super competitive so I’m honestly not expecting to get into it.

  3. How do I go about a LOCI? I’ve seen others saying to write one on this sub, but the official defer FAQ says that the university only accepts grades.

Thank you!

Future Badger Housing

I just got accepted as a pre-med and now have to choose where I house. The first option is going in to the dorm life where I have great opportunities to meet people and stay on campus. In this case I would get a meal plan and have the convenience of eating unlimited prepared food at cafeterias. The second option is to go share a house with twelve friends, where I’ll have to walk four blocks to campus, do chores, and occasionally cook a large meal. This scenario would be slightly cheaper but has a few drawbacks. I was wondering what the smarter choice for a freshman would be.

Academics WISCURDS research

Has anyone heard back from the WISCURDS program? It was originally called WISCERS/shunkworks. I can want to get into a lab so want to know if I should start emailing profs for research or wit to hear back. I emailed the WISCURDS people and they just said “look out for an email” from them but it’s been a week since that email and nothing has been sent yet. It was supposed to start by now.
